It was quiet when we visited but the atmosphere was friendly and the staff attentive. The menu was limited for our tastes but we made a choice, my partner had meat pie, I went for the stuffed peppers. We both had a dessert and the whole meal was nicely presented and very enjoyable.

We visited here with friends for lunch today, 4 adults and 1 toddler. The lady that works at this pub is an asset, she was welcoming, friendly and helpful. We were seated at the front of the pub next to a roaring fire, it was comfy, comfortable and the Locals at the bar were also friendly and accepting of a... More

There is a surprisingly spacious restaurant at the rear of this traditional Cotswold pub. It makes for a relaxed and peaceful eating experience. Service was very friendly and considerate for our mid-week lunchtime meal. Food was straightforward and well presented - nothing flashy, just good pub grub. Also good value at the lunchtime specials rate.

A spur of the moment lunch to cheer us up on a wet day. Friendly greeting on arrival. Very good special one course menu for £8, freshly cooked and served on warm plates which is especially important to me. Rated this pub as 4 star instead of 5 as we thought the measure of wine served, albeit a small, was... More

My parents live in Freeland, a couple of kilometres away, and we would often eat here when I'm back in Oxfordshire on holiday. The food is excellent and the place is traditional and very friendly. The roast beef I had on my most recent visit was melt-in-the-mouth... No baby change facilities but that's understandable.

We went here on a sunday lunchtime. There were tables reserved but they were able to fit the 4 of us in easily (we got there 12.45), even when we left at 2 it wasnt full, which is a shame. All the staff were really friendly. Despite not being on the menu they rustled up a burger for one of... More

The Hand and Shears is a lovely building, that was once a 'local' with a skittle alley at the back. This is now a very pleasant dining room that can comfortably cope with parties up to 40 diners (my guess, not a management statement). While so many country pubs are closing the 'Shears' has quietly improved over the last few... More

Main roads are a mile or more away but Oxford is within ten miles. Outside it looks no more than a good village pub. Inside, the bar area has kept some old village pub character. The dining area is an extension to the rear down a few steps. It's not too modern and blends in well. Character has not been... More

Great evening dinner spent here with the family! The menu wasn't huge (in a good way) and very varied, with more vegetarian options than you normally find. The food was delicious (I tried a bit of almost everyone's) and the service friendly and attentive. Great place, will be back!
