We visited on a Saturday lunchtime after a brisk 5 mile walk round the Hodder Valley. Wet dog in tow we sat in the bar, there was an eclectic mix of people dining. Fellow walkers, the odd dog, some smartly dressed pensioners, trendy mid aged couples and a load of people who were there for a wedding later. I haven't... More

Food is from 7.30pm......you can't book so if you want a table you need to get there early. Food and service was very good.

Gorgeous, historic inn with an atmosphere that can't be beaten. The smell of woodsmoke greets you as you walk in, and there are old-fashioned pictures of country squires on the walls. The menu has locally sourced specialities, such as Goosnargh chicken and Lonk lamb. I had the smoked salmon and the lamb shank, and both were delicious. Dogs (and people... More

Always great food here and one of my favourites although it is a few hours drive for me these days! Stayed the night and had supper in the bar with husband and school friend. Hearty portions, good ingredients and well executed make this a fine example of the classic English country inn. Unlike the other reviewer below, we found all... More

Lovely place in a lovely setting - bring your walking shoes / wellies and go for a walk, crossing the river on the stepping stones and work up an appetite Sunday lunch was very nice, all enjoyed, and grandad was placed that they did well done beef for him (the "pink" roast beef was lovely) Good for family gatherings and... We sought out the Inn at Whitewell for a celebratory lunch. We were greeted at 11:45am by a sullen waitress who informed us they didn't serve until 12. She looked put out when we asked if we could have a coffee while we waited the 15 minutes (others were doing this) and did not offer us a menu when 12... More

Many thanks for your thoughts, so sorry about the waitress, we have new two girls on holiday jobs and they are a bit nervous at the moment. Pate is very rich and very much loved, but glad the black pudding got a thumbs up. Regards Cb More

We came in and were pleased by the spacious informal setting and the views, and were keen to eat. However, however, however, this is *not* a restaurant where the staff attend to the words you say; they attend to their routine. When will I learn? This is not a top restaurant with intelligent, attentive serving staff but a straightforward pub.... More
