Although we live in Whitstable we tend not to eat there, paying tourist prices for fashionably tiny portions of, admittedly, good food. In fact on several occasions there was so littIe food on the plate I went home hungry. Now that's not right. I'm afraid we thought Birdies was in that category, but we were wrong, so wrong. Last Sunday... More

We booked around 2 weeks before our trip and so was pretty miffed when we were shown our table that was at the back facing the toilet and next to the kitchen. I'd suggest asking when you book for a window facing table. There was an empty table next to us and people were squeezing between them to get to... More

We had the beef wellington and the fish soup (bouliebasse). Both very good but no bread offered with the soup. When the bread arrived after me requesting it, it was a heated pitta bread - such a shame as the soup was very good but needed a good artisan wholemeal or something similar. Not convinced we would go again. The... More

Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Good friendly service. Chef very accommodating. Asked for a seafood platter that wasn't on the menu - made one up for us!

We (4 persons) thought the food was ok, nothing very special though. Prices on the high side, you pay for the location in harbour street. We also were "gently" asked by the waitress to speed up as they had another sitting at 9pm. We didn't want to be rushed and later as it turned there were plenty of tables free... More

Had an early dinner here with our kids and the food was great. Good selection of wines and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive and the prices all very reasonable for the quality of food. A lovely little find on the high street.

Had a great meal here lunchtime yesterday -a weekday -for my birthday. Smallish with gay red gingham tablecloths, feels a bit French but menu had a good range on offer, several fishy dishes included. We both had Crab bisque and the Dover sole to follow. The bisque was very flavoursome (and welcomely hot) served in a deep bowl but the bread... More

Can I be clear that the Redhead and I love the food at French themed Birdies; the cooking is consistently good, but there can be a disconcerting twist. It doesn't open Monday lunchtimes, so it was a surprise that chalkboard items like mussels and oysters were replaced, particularly by fried frozen prawns. Patron was away, but still.... But the Redhead... More

Lovely dinner and impeccable service. Varied menu and best Dover sole I've ever had. Can't wait to return - and they allow dogs - perfect !
