A warm welcome and a charming traditional old Kentish pub. Not the cheapest place to eat but great surroundings and good service. I wasn't overly happy with my streak - a sirloin but it was very fatty and lots of added 'garnishes' which could have done without - the chips were good and we ordered a side salad as it... More

Of the three great pubs we visited in southeast England, this was our favorite. We very much enjoyed The Great House in Hawkhurst and The Standard Inn in Rye [see reviews], but there was something about the combination of warm welcome, quaint charm, and wonderfully inventive food, that Made this Pub our Favorite. By the second night we went there,... More

We used to visit this pub a lot 30 years ago when we lived in Kent and were pleased to find it's more or less unchanged, apart from the garden which has lost a bit of its secluded charm from way back. But the pub's a lovely as ever and the lunch still good.

Old, welcoming, light and airy, busy. Pleasant service and good food. Thoroughly enjoyed a leisurely lunch after a visit to the Gardens nearby.

The pub was a typical English pub with a somewhat upscale menu that was affordable. The service and food were very good, and the atmosphere was friendly; parking was available.

Really quaint country pub with a perfect selection of ales on the still. We had lunch and were seated in a quiet corner away from the heart of the pub (which we wanted). The food was superb and served quickly and efficiently. My colleague had the fish which was hearty and super-tasty. I chose the liver, bacon and champ mash which... More

Great food in lovely atmosphere. This is an outstanding pub with great food. Not a fast food place, but a good food place, with really friendly service. This is a pub, a Sussex pub, and it will remain so. Highly recommended.

Headed to this place for dinner after a day out in Kent and the service and food was knockout! Amazing fine dining experience, food made with love and the setting was perfect - a well maintained traditional pub with a cosy feel. Well updated with a hint of modernity. Great staff too. A very romantic and candle-lit setting. We can't... More
