The Swan is a large, rambling country pub on the outskirts of Lyndhurst on the main A35 road. There is a large car park. The staff were very friendly, albeit a bit short-staffed with the girl behind the bar also serving and clearing at table. The food, however, was delicious with ample portions but the service was quite slow. No table service so order at the bar. There was a restricted range of beers. At the end of a fairly ordinary pub-type meal, we were surprised at the size of the bill - not cheap eats for sure. There is good disabled access at the left hand side of the building.

6 of us for dinner, they happened to have space to accommodate us, and that was great, we were pleased they were doing the help to eat out, we all chose our Preferred choice, but when we arrived at the bar, 4 of us had to change our choice as they didn’t have the wagu burger on that evening, not a problem we all chose something else, the price felt very expensive for lasagne and garlic bread for £15 and the steak and ale pie of same price, but when they arrived the food was very nice! We all enjoyed our meal, The kids and I all had soft drinks and 4 beers, for the men on the table, when I went to pay I almost fell off my purch, (we have been eating out a lot with this 50% off and our bill has never been this high) the bill was £81.50 and when I asked if she had taken off anything the bar lady told me she had removed £60 already. For a pub I found this to be very expensive....... would I go there again??? for that price not unless I had the 50% offer again, as the food was good.

Whenever in the forest we visit the Swan Inn, we visited twice during our time away. Why- because the food is great, the price is great value and the staff and service are always the best!!! During these covid times we knew that the Swan would look after our safety needs aswell as filling our tummy with great food with a great family pub atmosphere. A oneway system around the pub works well and there are stations with hand santizier dotted around, tables have been distanced from each other. And the staff were quick at clearing and cleaning up once tables were vacated. Sybil the land lady is a pleasure to chat too and she always gives great tips for exploring the wonder forest. Dogs are welcome in the pub and the resident 'Tilly' is always up for a cuddle with our children who adore seeing her. I would definitely recommend this lovely pub a welcoming place to enjoy some great food and will always return.

We were passing and saw they were doing eat out to help out. They ask you to enter by the front and wait to be seated, but they are short of staff so you sign in and find a table and then order at the bar. I order the special the ploughmans lunch which was £14.95. When it arrived it had half a roll you could say everything was half of even the pickled onion was cut in half, there was four pieces of apple that was brown as they were cut sometime ago, I ask for my money back as even though the government was paying half it was not worth the money they were charging. I noticed that they charged me £5.80 for two soft drinks. They also charge for sauces.

Came here on June 2nd and the covid measures in place are good, the garden looks good with the makeshift covers for the picnic tables and we have been many times before so know what to expect. On arrival we are met by a young man dressed in all black and who has the customer skills of a fish We weren’t greeted when we ordered drinks and asked what flavours j20 did they have he just rolled his eyes and looked in disgust but luckily a young girl offered to look and helped support this young man who clearly does not belong serving customers . We went into the garden and due to it starting to rain relocated at another table,we told the young man in question and gave him the new table number we were sat at and he said it doesn’t matter unless we are ordering more food and drink,I tried to explain we still require the items we have already paid for and he said we will just have to keep an eye out as items come out from the kitchen and try and intercept ours as he can’t pass on the new table number. The food was very average,a reduced menu due to training which consisted mainly of ciabatta”s We paid £55 for 4 ciabattas 2 small bowls of chips 2 j20’s a coke and a cider which is ridiculously overpriced and with the unwelcoming member of staff serving us we left feeling very disappointed knowing that we can get far better service at a much cheaper price at most places in and around lyndhurst

Visited here on the first day of our New Forest trip. We didn't return and nor would we in the future. It wasn't the best of starts after hours on the road. Service was slow but we accepted that as they were short staffed due to covid. The female servers were very friendly. Food was dreadful. The calamari were like elastic bands, so chewy that my daughter couldn't even bite through them. I had the ciabatta melt and couldn't quite work out how something so simple could have been so wrong - I can only conclude that in order to melt the cheese they had put it in the microwave as the bread was like rubber but seemed to become solid the longer I left it. I couldn't even cut it with a knife let alone bite it!! For £7 there is a toblerone cake - at that price you would think it was home made. We were sadly disappointed, it was bready and really rather rank. A frozen pudding from a supermarket, hugely overpriced. Lovely New Forest ice cream ruined by cheap strawberry sauce that you might expect from a Mr Whippy van. Our lunch bill for a calamari starter,a ciabatta melt, two small portions of (frozen) chips and two slices of cake was in excess of £40. A prime location clearly taking advantage of visitors. 2 minutes down the road is another pub, I highly recommend going there instead!! To put it into perspective, on our journey home we stopped off at a petrol station and grabbed a greasy sausage roll, without prompting my 11 year old said "This isn't great but far better than what we had at The Swan"

It is important to note that this pub is no longer part of the 4 square chain and I was advised they have not got a website at the moment. Therefore don’t be duped by the amazing menu online when you search this pub on google. Therefore you may wish to look at the red evening menu photos and the other colour is the day menu. The costs are on average £5 more per person so you would be looking at Main courses £13 or more (mostly £15), calamari starter £7, soup £6.50. My cousin had fish and chips and there was a piece of plastic the size of the palm of a hand in between the batter and the fish. In this instance the waitress returned to provide a refund and apology from the chef. Strangely there is an absence of good customer service at this pub. When I advised the waitress team there was a different menu online they told me they had searched the internet and that shouldn’t be the case as if I was lying. When I showed them my phone and it was the first result on google they changed and said they had noticed that and had tried to contact 4 square but they were not responding. I was made to feel like an imposition. We were not provided cutlery to take out to the garden and our food was delivered without any. After a few minutes when the remaining meal and cutlery had not been delivered and our food was beginning to go cold I went inside to ask for cutlery and was told I should have been given it on arrival. Again told in a way that implied I should have known or was my fault for not asking and no apology was given. I asked for Mayo and ketchup to come with our meal and when no mayo came, and I asked for some, the waiter looked at me like a deer in headlights as if he didn’t know if he could. Very strange. I think the pub has a damaging culture in their staff and a lack of customer service training. Maybe they are all terribly unhappy in their work. On the positives there was a nice outdoor area beside the road with coverings if it rains (No playground as they took this down). Inside seemed nice and toilets clean. As it got later it got busy indoors so they don’t want for customers. The burger was tasty and meat rather good but I thought still overpriced. Nice steak cut chips but careful they salt these in the kitchen so if you have children you may need to advise when you order that they shouldn’t salt the chips. I was not provided that option so my child had more salt than I would like. There are children’s options but they are not on the menu and when they reel these off verbally to you they don’t tell you the price. We won’t eat there again. The price was not reflective of the service at all and I regret I didn’t have the signal to get trip advisor up and read previous reviews.

So pulling into the carpark looked like a nice pub, staff upon entering seemed friendly and polite got seated by a young man with pink hair who said he would be back to take our order, about 10 minutes later a lady came back took our order 3 drinks, 2 roast beefs and a children’s burger. Drinks came quick so good positive start. But then our meals came 2 adult roast dinners and a childs roast (we ordered a burger) she realised her mistake almost immediately and went to change it, she did offer some crisps or chips for him to snack on before his dinner came (we declined) We had to ask for more gravy as Non-existent… wished we hadn’t bothered tasted burnt and not nice at all, roast was average not worth the price they charge. My son’s burger came maybe 15 minutes later after we had finished eating, the bun was stale and the burger looked like it had been bitten in half (find image attached) no one came back to offer give us our bill we had to go to the bar. The lady did apologise again for her mistake and didn’t charge us for the kids meal. But it’s such a shame as this place could be great if orders were read Back, quality control was in place in the kitchen as I would never serve up food that looked and tasted as it did. Unless they get a better chef or make changes would not come back or recommend.

Staff were friendly, food ok but ordered a child’s pasta cost about £7 he didn’t want salad which is fine but absolutely shocked when it arrived it was spaghetti but served in a small finger bowl/Chinese sauce bowl, would probably been ok for 3 year old but not for any older, luckily he had my garlic bread, he then ate dessert but both him and myself were hungry when arrived back home. Total bill was over £50, unfortunately we will not be going back. This is the first time we have left a restaurant or pub hungry, wished we had travel bit further to the Toby Carvery. Learnt the hard way.

We went for dinner on a Monday afternoon and arrived about 4pm. The alcoholic drinks were extremely reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly. They didn’t serve food orders untill 5 but they started taking orders at half 4 and the food was promptly served. We ate using the eat out to help out scheme but the food portions were huge so even without it would be worth the money for the amount of food served. The food was absolutely delicious and if we ever returned to the new forest we would definitely come here again.

We stayed overnight on Saturday at The Swan and we had a fantastic time. Very welcoming, we arrived early evening with our 2 labradors and were shown to our room, which had a double bed and a set of bunk beds. The room was upstairs and there was a door separate from the bar to take the dogs outside. We had a meal in the bar which was very busy and no wonder as the food was delicious! Lovely atmosphere and very reasonably priced. Although the room was above the bar it was wasn’t noisy and we all slept well. We had breakfast on Sunday and Sybil, the owner, looked after us very well, cooking us another tasty meal. The purpose of our trip was to meet family, have a walk with our dogs and kids and then lunch. Sybil advised on some walks around the local area and we chose to walk a circuit that took in Lyndhurst, which was very busy for a Sunday morning. Beautiful town, not too far away and lots of coffee shops to choose from. We walked back to The Swan for lunch. We had booked a table, which is advisable as they were very busy. Again for good reason as the food was great and we were able to sit and catch up with family, with our dogs snoozing under the table! We will definitely be making this trip again and can’t recommend The Swan, Sybil and her team highly enough. Thanks for a great stay, we’ll definitely be back xx

We have eaten there before several times and we were used to having a really high quality of food and service. However this weekend was absolutely awful. All of the burger buns/ panini breads were rock solid, the chips were soggy, burgers were burnt and as hard as a hockey puck. To top it off we waited and hour for the privilege and then found a hair in one of our meals too. Complete joke.

Went for a Sunday roast and very disappointing. Only choice was beef which my husband had, told the ploughman's I wanted instead shouldn't be on the menu they gave me. Had the vegan mushroom and chestnut loaf which was a pasty and I doubt was vegan which I'm not luckily. Yorkshire pudding felt like it had been in the fridge not the oven. Both roasts were very overpriced and should have been half the price. The diet cokes didn't have any fizz and asked to have it replaced to be told that the glass didn't have a widget - no there was no gas at all. The waitress looked about 12 and didn't know what she was talking about. Will never recommend nor return to this place, shame as it was a lovely pub from the outside.

Tried the take away service on offer due to Covid restrictions. It was first class. Food was amazing, still hot and very tasty after being transported 30 miles. Two turkey roasts, one vegen roast, kids burger and kids nuggets, followed by sweets all round all beautifully prepared and ready for me at an agreed time. Excellent decision, will do this again.

Popped in for lunch with 7 adults, 2 dogs and 3 children. Made to feel very welcome. Was given the covid guidance. Lovely table in the pub overlooking the gardens. The manager was very welcoming, took our orders and advised us what to pick, even came back to the table with a bowl of water for the dogs. His recommendation was spot on, the fish was delicious and best I had tasted. Everyone in my party had such a lovely lunch. 100% recommended this pub, will be visiting again when down in the New Forest again.
