Small portions ( chicken supreme) but with a hefty price tag - was not much bigger than a kids meal.
Glass of Rose Wine £9.90 ouch!
Pub atmosphere is very pleasant and they had a good quiz but eating there is not VFM

We were in Lyndhurst for the weekend and staying at a hotel just across the road from The Fox and Hounds.
Being a Sunday, we fancied a nice, tradional roast dinner at a pub which we could walk to. The Fox and Hounds is a Fuller's pub, and I'm partial to a pint or two of London Pride.
I made an online table reservation for 6pm (a late lunch) and we arrived promply and were immediately shown to our table and handed menus. Table water was also provided straight away.
A waiter returned to take our drinks order and that was followed by the manageress coming over to take our food order. The only item on the menu that had sold out was the steak and ale pie.
My wife and I both ordered the roast beef which, when served, was nice and pink, and the accompanying potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding, nice and hot.
The food was delicious and very satisfying - especially when washed down with some nice ale.
We both had a dessert which were similarly satisfying.
The service provided by the staff was excellent and we left the pub with a warm glow of contentment.

It was okay, but that’s all I’d say really.
Sadly the vegetables I was served looked a little sorry for themselves, the broccoli was boiled within almost an inch of its life and what was labelled a ‘side salad’ was a very small portion of pretty basic lettuce. The cod while beautifully crispy was lacking flavour.
The chap serving, while absolutely not rude, was just so nonchalant, he seemed totally unbothered & lacked any apology when an item of the dish was missing.
Atmosphere is okay.
Had been before a couple of years prior and it was great so it was a shame. Wouldn’t return, just not good enough quality or service especially for the price.

I was quite disappointed when me and my family attended for a birthday lunch. There was 10 of us and we originally booked, yet had to get menus off of other tables and had to ask if there was any specials. One of us asked the waitress if they did anything special for birthdays, she stated “i shall ask” but heard nothing back. When ordered food at the bar there was no mention of limited items on the menu, I ordered the burger and when received i had no coleslaw on the plate. There was no mention about this i then had to ask the waitress and she stated “we are out of coleslaw”. Which should have been mentioned prior to ordering, As previously worked in a pub/ restaurant for 3 years our team always had the decency to mention “we are currently out of said item, is there anything i can switch it for”. But the waitress just apologised and moved on. The birthday girl ordered a courgette dish and there was a sauce that said it came on the side however it came in the hummus, yet again having to ask the waitress about this and when she came back with sauces failed to mention and we had to ask again. We was not impressed. We also had no check back on food and the waitress never even mentioned desserts. I had been here over a year ago and loved the food just unfortunate that today’s experience was disappointing. I do not normally leave reviews but, i believe this just needed one when my family has a bad experience it takes a toll on me.

We live in Lyndhurst Village and this used to be our go-to, local Pub. Unfortunately, the staff just do not seem to care. Last night we ordered two bhaji burgers, a pint and a rum and Coke - £48 lighter even after our locals discount. The meal was plonked down miserably… we were offered condiments, I asked if they had vegan mayo and the reply was ‘probably not’ … so I asked for ketchup and a tiny pot was bought it over to share. The burger was so small and incredibly dry…. My husband got up to try and get more ketchup for us as there was no staff around to ask. We were both incredibly hungry and the small pot of chips were lovely, but it left us saying that we will absolutely never be back again. This is the third time we’ve had a really poor meal here. You always want to support your local pub and it really did used to be fantastic but no longer. It used to be full of locals and interestingly, we didn’t see any last night. everybody locally in the village probably realises there are other better options. Save your money and go somewhere else, we won’t ever be back again. The New Forest Inn, Emery Down is much nicer or The Stag.
Incidentally, we went to get two Diet Coke’s (as the meal was so dry) and for two small mush cokes it was £6.90!!

Fox and Hounds Lyndhurst
Hello Kate D,
We are so sorry to hear you had this experience here with us. We love our local's here at The Fox and Hounds and from feedback we like to think they love us too!
We do in fact have Vegan mayo so I apologise that this staff member never knew to get this for you.
I have now reminded all staff, old and new, that we do have vegan mayo!
Unfortunately, we cannot change our prices this is Fuller's pricing and due to being in one of the biggest tourist locations of England, this is the pricing they have chosen. This is also why we offer a locals discount.
Yes, I agree The New Forest Inn and The Stag are also lovely additions to Lyndhurst!
According to reviews and general feedback, we are still the best in Lyndhurst for food and drinks but thank you for your feedback and I will also pass it onto the kitchen team regarding the burgers. Once again, apologise about your meal here and we hope to see you back in the future to give you a better experience.
Kind regards,
Team Fox.

As regular tourists to Lyndhurst we've been to this pub many times over the years.
It used to serve excellent food, but the last couple of times the food has been just so-so. However, I'm sorry to say that the quality of the food we had for our evening dinner there the other night was nothing other than dreadful.
We had the "recommended" that was written on a small board next to our table. It said "Smoked Haddock, Jersey potatoes, Spinach, Poached egg and Hollandaise sauce". (Try to picture what you would expect to receive!!)
.... fish & egg, sat on a big potato fritta sat on a bed of white cabbage maybe?
What was served to us was truly shocking. Our reaction was .. "What's that!!". Delivered to our table were what only can be described as an undercooked, piled up mess, with one totally undercooked. The waitress was very understanding and said would we like something else, but not wanting to complain and upset anyone in the kitchen we decided to eat what we were given in the hope it might taste ok.. how wrong we were. We should have asked for our money back.
The jersey potatoes were in fact a big fried potato Fritta and instead of spinach, the whole meal sat on white cabbage!! My wife's fish was quite wet, but she could manage it, but mine was completely undercooked and even she said that's inedible. Her egg was cooked ok, but my egg was so undercooked that parts of the white were transparent, just like out of a raw cracked egg.
I do not like to criticise pubs that we've enjoyed in the past and full marks for being doggy friendly, but when you are paying a lot of money for your evening meal, then you'd expect at least two things.. firstly for the meal to be what it says on the menu and secondly, for it to be cooked!
Evening ruined. One star.

This is the fifth or so time we’ve made a special trip to the lovely Fox and Hounds for their amazing fish and chips after a walk in the New Forest. It’s the second time in a row we’ve found no food was being served at the time advertised. Except that this time, we said we were there for food and were told by friendly bar staff (Irish - just for identification) that food service started in a hour so we had a drink meanwhile. Went to order at the appointed time (7pm on a Sunday - seemed a bit late) to be told by a stroppy teenager that the kitchen wasn’t open that evening because it had run out of ingredients. Then at least 3 tables next to us were served main courses off the menu. Went to check we’d been given the right message and were told (with a look as if I was stupid from the same teenager) that the people being served all worked there! No food for us. Very disappointed and it was now 7.30 pm on a Sunday with two increasingly hangry adults. Note to self: phone ahead in future. Not sure we’ll bother again though - we used to love this place.

Well what can I say, we had the unfortunate experience of visiting on a quiz night , tables booked but empty nearly an hour after booking time but no one had used them but still reserved, first person who served me asked if I was a local, it sounded like there is a two tier pricing system going on. When I asked a member of staff if she could wipe our table as it badly needed it, it was done with somewhat reluctance, this reluctance continued when I asked for service next, as she was obviously more interested in talking to a local! The final straw came when I enquired about if a dark non spiced rum was available which was accompanied by a shrug of the shoulders and a wave of the hand towards an array of bottles on a shelf none of which I could read at that distance. Don’t bother going because it’s fairly obvious if you are not local you are not really welcome.

We like this pub and their Sunday roasts are very good and quite big portions but have become a bit too expensive, we are not going that much anymore.
The chef definitely can cook, the roast beef is always nice and pink and the sauces are good.
The desserts are nice but not special, my partner had a Bakewell slice that was small and cost £9.00 - definitely not worth it. My sticky toffee pud for £7.50 was nicer.

Hope you are keeping well.
We are delighted you enjoyed your time here with us and enjoyed the food.
We are sorry about the pricing of us menus but unfortunately we cannot change the pricing here at the Fox as that is out of our hands.
We do hope to see you guys again and make sure to keep an eye out for our midweek deals which gives some cheaper options for our wonderful customers.
We understand it is quiet pricey in the New Forest but we hope it doesn't turn you off coming back!
Hoping to see you guys soon,
Kind regards,
Fox & Hounds, Lyndhurst.

Amstel £5.20 per pint, Prosecco £9.50 for a 200ml bottle. Chicken breast burger, smallest chicken breast I've ever seen, portion of chips, 12 to 15 chips. Cottage Pie served in a very small pot vegetables forgotten, arrived after the cottage pie. Slow food service. I am aware that this is a tourist area, but small portions and overpriced prosecco, not good. £5.20 for a pint of Amstel Lager is also pushing it a bit. Overall, not a good experience.

We had a family walk on this sunny Sunday over to Lyndhurst for a satisfying Sunday lunch. The Fox and Hounds a large pub in the centre of the village. It has a traditional rustic feel of an English country pub. We went traditional beef Sunday lunch and were treated to a generous high quality meal. I washed mine down with a Fullers London Pride. A satisfying meal in a cosy environment.

Our Sunday Roast was delicious with generous portions. We didn't have our dog with us as we we opted for the dining room, but the bar area is dog friendly, including treats and a watering station. I'm local but have not visited for a few years. This is a popular pub in a prime position in Lyndhurst. The hardworking staff just need to make a few tweaks : we were not escorted to the table and instructions vague: all tables had dead flowers in vases: roast chicken came without the included stuffing: £5 dessert price not applied in the bill. The luke- warm Bakewell was not good value at £8. Book over the phone rather than online.

Had lunch at the Fox & Hounds in Lyndhurst earlier today with 6 adults and three children. I have to say that the food was very poor - the burgers were very overcooked and dry and the chips were also not very nice. The fish and chips were equally overcooked, which given the £15 price tag made it even more unacceptable. Given that the food was paid for at the point of ordering there seemed little point in making a complaint but I shall not be frequenting this establishment again.

The pub welcomed our group of 11 so well and the staff team were outstanding. The food was delicious, served hot and all at the same time which was good for such a large party. Our special diets were well catered for and we loved the atmosphere in the pub - buzzy but not noisy. A big thank you to the staff.

Visited here for lunch with a friend. Staff were very good and the main course was excellent but be warned if you order the cookie and ice cream to share it really is not worth the £8 charge. The staff did refund when we complained but so far it has not appeared on my debit card.
