The Sundowner serves a variety of classic Australian pub food for what seems to be a largely undiscerning clientele, with an emphasis on hearty meals and a free salad and veggie bar. It mostly caters to family groups on a budget. Fine dining it isn't, but it offers good, tasty meals - my dining companions appreciated the fish and chips... More

Not many places open after 8pm so good to be able to order up until 8.30pm. Meal served quickly and salad and Vegetable bar still well stocked even though end of service. Staff friendly and meal quality and size very adequate.

The food was good quality - I felt the mains were a little over priced. I think that if they combined the Big Breakfast with the Continental Breakfast that would be a lot better for families and regular business visitors.

We ate in the dining room at the Sundowner with my dive group. they were able to seat around 30 people and offered an at table drinks service, dinner was still ordered by going to the counter. The restaurant appeared to be popular with the locals.

Looks like a shed from the road, which is probably the same for everything else in Whyalla, but inside the restaurant is another world. Sure, a very big space, like a shed, but great ambiance for the middle of nowhere. I think it's the lighting. They've taken some care there. And, the service! The staff here are very, very, well... Had a lovely meal, with great service and were about to order another round of drinks at 9.000pm when we were asked to move to the bar. Felt like we were being herded towards the pokies rather than allowing us to make our own decisions.

We had lunch at the restaurant. It was really nice, and we wouldn't hesitate to go back. We just had their cheap lunch of fish and chips. The fish was great and the chips were served in a little bowl which was great...no overeating (but ample) at lunch time! The coffee was a bit ordinary. The staff were terrific.

For pub food this is really good. Large area to eat. Lots of space. Quite a nice area outside to eat if you please. Good selection and the salad and vegetable bar. Meals were a bit pricey. A couple of dollars more than you would expect to pay but... The food was good so well worth it. The potato mash... More
