We visited on a Saturday evening and the atmosphere was good. It was very busy but the service was still good. However, the good left a lot to be desired. Whitebait smelt awfu and we couldn’t finish it. My pasta dish was unappetising as the...sauce had split was very oily. My partner’s pizza was very soggy as the liquid had drained out of the mozzzella leaving the pizza base wet. Would return for drinks but not food!More

Gosh, what a total let down, miserable meal with ten friends, even with a pre ordered menu the results were poor. Unfortunately this is the third time a group arranged meals over the last four years and ended again here, probably because one of them...have no taste buds. Whilst the service and staff are good, the building is georgeus the catering will never be more than pub grub. They cannot possibly watch any TV chefs as even I get more passion for cooking after that!! The menu is limited, where are the all time great British foods, like bubble n squeak, cottage pie, real homemade big steak pies, and creamy mash, roasted veg, thick lentil soup, homemade crusty bread and kitchen made butter pats, (butter making is soooo easy plus you can add herbs etc) Cheshire cheese pie, in fact all the food we have locally, and make the county the star on the plate. No sorry this one is an epic fail If there are any cooks reading this, then sorry we really have to get back to real food, Cut out the odd variations and stick to what you must have been trained for and grow with passion from there.More

Limited range of gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, calorie reducing etc etc. Seems the client menu selection is aimed at blokes only, as who really needs fried food, chips and more chips these days. Nothing stands out as exciting, nothing new or modern, food temperatures are...woeful, how can you really get soup so cool, it's hardly a tricky dish and how doesn't a trained cook realise vegetables have to be strained when making soup, otherwise you get hard bits of fibre between your teeth! Very dissapointing meal, I think the whole place should be re born as serviced apartments, as with the booming tourist trade another just ok restaurant will be be surplus to requirements. I think they have lost their way, time to reboot.More

Sandwiches arrived already cut with no choice of fillings. There was egg mayo, smokes salmon & cream cheese & ham & wholegrain mustard. I really do wish places would ask first before service whether mustard is required or not as 2 out of 3 of...our party didn't like mustard, which spoils choice of sandwiches. The sweet choices were ok, but nothing special - a little macaroon each, a small square of cake & a scone. Expensive at £54 for what was served. It was ok but nothing to get excited about.More

Just had a lovely brunch celebrating our daughters landmark birthday, service was excellent and quality of the food was very good. The setting is very nice and close to town centre. Would highly recommend.

I was thrilled to receive a Luxury afternoon tea at The Residence as a special Birthday treat from my Brother. We have been today and although we couldn't fault the food or the service, for me it could have been better. What let it down...( hence the 3 stars) was the lack of the finer touches which we expected for the price & the fact it was supposed to be a Luxury Afternoon Tea. The food was of reasonable quality with homemade cakes etc & was fine for a Standard Afternoon Tea . A High End Afternoon Tea should be just that & I feel The Residence fell well short of 5 stars. In my opinion the experience would be improved If 1) We had been asked what our bread preference was instead of just being given multi seed 2) We had been given the opportunity to choose the sandwich fillings from a selection. The ham was mustard infused & I don't like mustard 3) A pastry fork had been provided instead of a huge dinner knife & fork 4) Teasoons for the dessert had been provided without asking 5) The sugar bowl had contained sugar or lumps instead of sachets 6) The coffee had not been in a teapot!!! and an ugly one at that. Overall an ok experience but not memorable & not Luxury . I've had better for half the priceMore

We have struggled with the Residence of late. The wine selection by the glass is not great, much better choice by the bottle. We thought we would give the bar another go and popped in last Saturday early evening for a drink. We decided not...to go for wine, lager and G&T instead. I was really disappointed when my Hendricks was served with lime as opposed to cucumber and even more disappointed when it was served in a warm glass. The surroundings are nice, however, it will be a while before we ‘pop’ in again. A real shame.More
