Located just to the left of the middle of no where is Xcalak. The only way you're ever going to be there is if you make an effort to get way off the beaten path. Since I seem to suffer from some affliction which drives me to do this, I end up at least yearly in xcalk. These days the... More

So we arrive in Xcalak, dusty after the drive, and hungry after turning into the cruise ship dock rather than the town strip when we said, on the drive, "We're hungry, let's eat in Mahaul." The Caribe is open, looking deserted at 4 in the afternoon, but another family was just finishing up. We trooped up, ordered variously the shrimp... More

Freddie, the owner and chef, was charming and gracious. The food was fabulous! We heard about the paella from the local dive shop, so we stopped by and asked if he would have any that evening. No problem. When we arrived he had our table set and we sat and drank a beer while he prepared the paella. He brought... More

We ate twice at Xcalak Caribe in January 2013 and were delighted each time. Freddy from Spain and Belgium and his wife from Bolivia are amazing cooks (we first had squids and then paella) and they manage to give their food a taste of the best from everywhere. The place is very pleasant, overlooking the beach, it feels like time... More

We stayed 3 nights at this restaurant/lodge. Very relaxing despite being with a friend with some emotional/mental distress. Despite that, Freddie makes a paella like none other (well, I've never had it elsewhere but his was pretty awesome!). We didn't socialize with him that much but he seems a pretty cool fellow just doing his thing. The rooms are clean,... More

Freddie is a great cook, best food I found in the area. Lobster tails to die for. Do not get to exotic or demanding, he is a retired expat and he may just take the next day off.

We had dinner at the Caribe twice out of the 7 nites while in Xcalak. The first nite we had a huge plate of mixed ceviche (amazing) and snapper fillets also huge (perfectly cooked). Tasty mojitos. The new owners are really nice and quite apt at preparing food "cooked" right. 2nd nite we wanted paella ( one of their specialties),... More

Apparently we ate at this restaurant the first week it was open. What luck! Great food, great views, really nice people.
