These guys were very busy. It may just be my taste, but I really didn't find this worth the money. I realize it's a small town, and probably caters to the tourist crowd. I had the ribeye with some veggies and mashed potatoes. It was...average at best. My wife had trout. The chia bread was good. They had plenty of business. The other option was another bistro type restaurant. Or Cracker Barrel up the interstate.More

First night in Saluda and we had to visit Purple Onion l. I called and made our reservation and glad I did because they were very very busy on this warm Saturday night . (I expected that ) We were sat at a table near...the window and relaxed. I asked if their tea as southern sweet and she said yes indeed , it was not , pretty much somewhat sweet. I decided to not say anything and just enjoy the meal . I ordered the Caesar salad , then the half chicken with grit cakes and broccoli spears. My wife ordered the trout with quinoa. The Caesar salad was amazing and highlight of the night . The chicken was good , not great but good and the grit cakes were a little bland . My wife enjoyed the trout but the quinoa was peppery and not to her liking . The service was pretty good , it was busy and I take that into accord . For dessert I had the chocolate decadence which was very good . All in all this was a 3.5 out of 5 , I will say the atmosphere and the place itself rates number one. I love pd that building. Next time I’m there. May give it another shot as my wife did enjoy her fish and that counts a lot .More

I don’t know if they had an off night or one bad employee or what. My family gave em a visit in December they waiter that came to our table informed us the kitchen was closed. A very nice young man scurried over to correct...that. We placed an order of food and drinks. After a 45 minute wait we asked the “nice young man” what’s the deal he immediately responded he forgot to place the order. 90 minutes of wasted time. Don’t go unless u have a particular taste fir rudeness and tone line wasting. If so this is your spot.More

I enjoyed a wonderful solo meal at Purple Onion last night. I immediately felt at home with the friendly staff and the relaxed, historic surroundings, but it was the food I'll remember most--it was hands down the best meal I've had in quite some time....Everything I tried, from the marinated olives, chia seed baguette and chicken tortilla soup I enjoyed as appetizers to the creme brulee I had as dessert, was delicious. But it was my main course of Pecan Crusted Sunburst Mountain Trout that absolutely floored me. My friendly server, Beth, helped me decide upon this entree and I'm so glad she did. It was so fresh and bursting with flavor. The accompaniments to the dish, which included quinoa and butternut sauté, braised kale, and hot apple fennel slaw, were so unique and delicious, and they complemented the flavor of the trout perfectly. The restaurant is clearly proud of this dish and rightly so. My sincerely; compliments to the chef--I will definitely be back!More

This restraunt is a must stop for us anytime we are near Saluda. They have a very electric menu, wonderful daily specials and desserts that are outstanding. You owe to yourself to stop in if you have not done so when in Saluda.

Great burger, great kale salad. Enjoyed the flavorful crab dip and the local honey and smoked Gouda platter.

Our family has a cabin on Lake Sheila in Saluda, NC, so every time we go to the cabin it's a given that we're going to The Purple Onion at least once. This past weekend, we ate dinner there three nights in a row! Even...though COVID-19 has made everything weird, it remains a charming, cozy, one-of-a-kind place situated in a beautiful old building in Saluda's historic downtown. They feature local artwork Pre-COVID-19 they periodically had live music. I always say I'm going to eat the crab dip for my entree, but we always end up ordering it as an appetizer for the table to share, and I order an entree. Thursday and Friday nights, I had the ahi tuna special, and Saturday night I had the shrimp feta penne. Others at the table ordered the black and bleu ribeye three nights in a row, pork tenderloin, and of course pizza! We usually order a pizza to go to snack on all weekend. We also usually order a bottle (or two!) of wine. Yes, it can be pricey if you go all out, but there are plenty of items to order that don't get out of hand. Also, the servers are attentive and fun to joke around with. This is a small local restaurant, and they don't rush you in and out the door. If you go, just plan to relax and have an enjoyable experience.More
