You really can't call this place a restaurant - it is cafe-style eating and as such they are overpriced. However, as they had good reviews we have given Fourthchild the benefit of doubt and been there twice. The first time it was just my husband...and me. My husband enjoyed his meal - let's give it 75%, which is pretty good from some-one who is a very experienced in the kitchen himself. I thought mine was tasty enough but not memorable enough to remember what I had - so lets say 65%. The 2nd time there were 5 of us. We all found the food was rushed and bland. Ipswich has a lot of good dining choices, so my recommendation would be to not to hurry to this one.More

Gave this place a second chance but they failed. This is a cafe trying and failing to produce fine dining food. Food tasted old and overdone. Dishes have a fine dining price and to add to the experience we were overcharged. And millions of flies...everywhere- yuk! Never again.More

Beyond me why people like this place. The only constant is the obnoxious extremely rude owner. There are many other cafes nearby that always have great food and nice polite owners and staff

Large sign out front says open at 6.30am, but they did not open until 7am. We had to wait 30 minutes in the car out front. We had a breakfast voucher from a nearby hotel, but the waitress knew nothing about it. It took a...further 10 minutes to find someone who did and we were presented with a special set menu. I ordered the bacon and eggs which are shown on the menu to come with tomato and baked beans. The waitress arrive with eggs and toast, nothing else, so I sent it back. It returned 5 minutes later with bacon added, but no beans or tomato. As the eggs were now getting cold I accepted the dish as presented, to find the toast cooked only on one side. The coffee was cold!More

Great venue, but very overpriced. Fine dining prices for ordinary food. Had previously visited with a very large group, snack food (sandwiches, scones etc) was tasty, good sized portions.

New menu delivered some promising pairings but the food served was subpar and did not live up to the price point. Located in one of the historic brick buildings Fourthchild offers a relaxed atmosphere,  the deck is a nice place to enjoy the cool breeze,...cold beer, with views over the train station and beyond to St Marys Cathedral. Both main meals we chose were priced between $40-$46  each which for Ipswich would be considered the highest priced point. Reef and Beef, served with chips and a side salad; The steak had an odd flavour and was chewy, served on top 2 prawns, 2 scallops and an incomplete Moreton Bay bug, that’s right we got the shell and no actual meat inside, how does a chef miss this?  The chips were perfect, but we could have done with a few more. Seafood sauce provided good flavours and combined with the chips made the plate.  Crispy Skin Duck; all of the elements of the dish were put together with thought and represented a pleasing classical pairing however nearly every element was ‘off’ as in not prepared or cooked correctly.   The main issue with the duck was that it was not crispy, rather chewy and the meat flavourless, the potato gratin was undercooked, evident by starch flavours and slight crunch with each bite. The ginger beer on tap was full of flavour, vibrant and bubbly, however the beer I had was flat. Our dissatisfaction with the main meals, coupled with flat beer and high prices, we decided to skip desert, which was a pity as I have read they are homemade and really wanted to give them a go. I think FC are trying to price themselves as upmarket, however the venue is more relaxed and the dishes didn’t live up to expectation, if they were priced in the $22-30 bracket perhaps we would have been more forgiving, however being served a bug shell is unforgivable.  I really wanted to point out to staff that the bug was missing but reality is it’s not my place to tell them how to do their job. Overall dinner missed the mark for us.  More

Visited for a quick light lunch today. We are not locals and found they have moved across the street to bigger premises and I believe have new management. But bigger premises means longer waits. We waited 25 minutes for our order to be taken and...had to call a waitress to do so. The excuse was because she was busy attending to the boss’ table in an adjoining room. The boss needs to know his customers come first! We ordered the gelato trio, which the menu said was served with fruit and cream. There was gelato only in the bowl. We mentioned this to the cashier and suggested we should receive A discount on the desert. It was dismissed with a laugh and no discount was given. Have previously eaten there, but not sure if we will go back. Very disappointing.More

As a business person, I hesitate to write a negative review in these tough times, but some things can't be dismissed. My elderly mother (late 70s) attended this restaurant last week in the company of other, elderly friends. Being under 5 feet tall, she is...not a large lady. Imagine her shock then, when the chair she was sitting upon suddenly collapsed during her luncheon, depositing her very unceremoniously on the floor. My mother still works part-time in a labour-intensive job as a cook on a cattle station, so it was very fortunate that the fall didn't injure her. As one of her less agile friends noted, it was very lucky it wasn't one of them that this had happened to. While my mother was more embarrassed than hurt, it was still disappointing that the response by the staff was so cavalier. After checking that she was visibly unhurt, they brought her another chair and dismissed the matter. I was perplexed when she admitted they didn't even check on her wellbeing later, let alone offer a discount on her meal. I know it's tough times, but that's just poor customer relations and it was well noted by everyone present. Hopefully, it can be attributed to poorly trained staff on that particular day, rather than reflective of the general calibre of their personnel; regardless, my mother won't be returning to find out.More
