The PR is a Raleigh institution and has earned its spot. The burgers a generous and there are toppings to suit every taste. The quality of the beef is outstanding and they cook the just the way you order them. My dinner companion wanted a well done burger and I wanted mine medium. They arrived at the same time and... Took friends to Players Retreat who were in town to do college tour of State campus. Encouraged them to get the burgers since that is the 'can't go wrong item' on the menu. Everyone very happy with selections. Two of us ordered the 4 oz. burger and it was still very generous. Our out of town friends commented on how... More

Walked over from the Aloft for a late dinner. Couldn't have been happier. Busy, not cookie-cutter designer "sports" bar. Authentic, old, warm, inviting. Friendly staff, and good, simple, American bar food. Add cold beer and a nice bourbon selection, and you've got a strong dynamic.

Chef Littlejohn has a newly refurbished kitchen and she knows how to use it! Most of the stuff here is standard sports bar food, but be sure to ask about Chef Littlejohn’s specials because that’s where you’ll see her talent shine. About $30 per person for dinner, with booze, before tip, no dessert.

Players Retreat(usually called just The PR) has been a staple college bar, near N.C. State, for many years, have gone there myself off & on for close to 50 years. While they have the standard bar fare, a couple of extras are that they grind their own meat, which means you can order burgers how you like them. They also... More

They had a good ribeye with potato and salad for a decent price ($24). Beer prices were good but $8 for a Jack Daniels seemed steep for the area. Atmosphere was good, historic bar feel.

We've been here a few times now and the food has always been excellent. The first time we both had one of their delicious hamburgers. They were awesome. This last time I had the What You Like with Noodles. A friend that was with us had it with Rice. Both were good but I liked mine best. My wife had... More

What it is, is a great bar. I don't understand some of the negative reviews. This establishment has great ambiance and atmosphere. Great service, Gabby is a sweetheart. Tremendous selection of liquor especially scotch and beers. The burger and especially the onion rings are off the charts. I recommend this long time Raleigh watering hole highly.

Description
In 1951, Bernie and Mickey Hanula founded the institution known as the Players Retreat. Less or a bar and restaurant, and more of a family. With menu options for every appetite, the PR remains a popular respite for the young and the old, the rich and the poor.
