We dined here Friday Sept 10 with a large group of 13. We called at noon to give how many would be dining and were told to be there by 4:45 with our group and to let them know when we arrived and they would...have a table ready to seat us when they opened. As promised, we were among one of the first groups seated when they opened at 5. Our waiter was exceptional and got our drinks quickly, along with warm bread and butter. (I am gluten free, so cannot comment of the bread but everyone at our table enjoyed it) I ordered build my own combination, lump crab, scallops, and Mahi Mahi, with a upcharge of asparagus. None of my food was seasoned, with anything other than butter. The scalopps were good, but bland. The lump crab meat was dry and bland and the Mahi Mahi was terrible, overcooked, dry and a bit tough. No seasoning, or sauce, except for some salsa type garnish on the side. My asparagus was good, but others at the table who got the brocolli said it was cold and my friend put some extra butter on her's for flavor and the butter didn't even melt, just clumped on top. Of all the seafood dinners I had last week while in OBX, this was the one I looked most forward to, and was my least favorite.More

Surf and turf was the best! Steaks were cooked perfectly, shrimp was seasoned perfectly and portions were huge! We came after 7pm on a Tuesday and were told there would be a 30 minute wait, but it ended up being about 15 minutes. There’s a...nice patio bar over the water that we enjoyed while waiting. Our server was great and the food came out quick. We had a nice view of the sound from our table, too. The peanut butter cheesecake was the best dessert and our favorite part of the dinner. Highly recommend eating here!More

As locals we have enjoyed Tale of The Whale for over 25 years. We have occasionally visited other restaurants but always with regrets we didn't go to TOW. Every experience has exceeded our expectations in service, variety and quality of meals, atmosphere, value and personal...attention of Carol, Cathy and Dan.More

This place was amazing! View was beautiful, fast wait ( even if the wait was long you got to wait on the pier and there’s a bar) , the food was top notch and so delicious, and very helpful waitstaff.

This was our first visit to the restaurant and we enjoyed our meals. We arrived for early bird specials and received 20% off our meals. I had a delicious non alcoholic frozen mango drink and a delicious crabmeat dish for my meal. My husband had...a huge delicious wedge salad and broiled seafood platter with a nice variety of fish. Unfortunately we were too full for dessert. All in all our meals were delicious. Service was very good and restaurant very clean.More

We got the last available window seat and were lucky enough to get Susan as our server. She was terrific and made our experience that much better. Appetizers were sooo good, crab soup was wonderful and our meals couldn’t have been better. What a great...night out!More

I got here at 3:40 and got signed in. I was at a table by 4:05 right after they opened. You get a big round loaf of bread with creamy butter. It was good. I got a side salad with creamy raspberry vinegerette . I...had the fish duo with mahi and cobi. It was good. It comes with stuffed crab on top and a dill sauce. I ate all the mashed potatoes but sauted green beans are not my thing. I got the oreo cake for dessert, It was good. Got to watch people on jet skis the whole time. A little entertainment. I would like to go back sometime and try their broiled fish with hushpuppies and slaw.More

Wife and tried this place for first time last week on vacation. It was about an hour and half wait so go early or sit in the lounge. We had great service. I ordered broiled flounder and it was delicious. Wife ordered steak and fish...and enjoyed it. Matt was our server and he was polite and respectful. Refills were prompt. We put this on our “short list” of places to go when in the area.More

We have been coming to the Outer Banks for a long time and have eaten at many restaurants including Tale of the Whale years ago. Other than the view, it was ok but not outstanding. That changed for us this year. We decided to give...it another try based on a great deal of 20% off the entire bill if you eat between 4 and 5 pm. How could it be bad? We arrived at 4 and there were alot of people already there on line. We gave our name and was asked if we would sit in the lounge. We said yes and were seated 15 minutes later. The lounge does not have the famous Tale of the Whale view but it was cozy and uncrowded (especially nice since almost no one on the Outer Banks was masked and social distancing was not so much anywhere). Our server was professional and knowledgeable but friendly. The menu was very big with several options for each type of food. My wife and i decided on fish - the grilled trio for her and fish duo for me. We had tilefish, swordfish and salmon, all very fresh and delicious. The sides were equally good (which I wish I could say about almost every other restaurant). We each had really good mashed potatoes that were almost as good as my wife's and broccoli that was nice and crisp instead of a pile of green mush. The prices were comparable to the rest of the island. We enjoyed our meal immensely, it was one of the best of the week. Next year I think Tale of the Whale will replace some of our regular restaurants.More

The wait was long, but expected. The food and service were good BUT, I paid in cash and they did not give me change. Instead, they took the price up to the next dollar. OK, it was just 75 cents, but THAT'S JUST STEALING!!!!

We were there for lunch and found their prices quite reasonable -e.g., $12-17 for lunch.
