Take Out Dinner for Family

Our family ordered fried chicken platters to go and we all enjoyed the chicken. It was tasty and well cooked. Mashed potatoes were ok as was the cornbread. We also had green beans which were good. Good, efficient curbside service due to the coronavirus impacting the country.

Fun, fun lunch with great food!

I had lunch today with my husband and another couple who are our friends and we had a wonderful time and a wonderful meal. The food is good and the menu makes it hard to choose - lots of interesting options. I had the grilled fish tacos and the portion was so generous I asked for a box right away - and I tend to pack it away! With coconut rice and black beans and 2 generous fish tacos packed with grilled fish this was a delicious option. My husband opted for the coconut grilled chicken on a potato roll bun along with french fries, and he enjoyed that thoroughly. Our waitress was really wonderful and the restaurant was filled for lunch. The decor here is wonderful - sea creatures painted on the walls and original art as well. We had a great time!

The Stir Fry bowls are SO good!

My husband and I had the stir fry bowl with beef and shrimp with white rice. I'm not usually a stir fry person and I don't do mushrooms, but I decided to get the stir fry bowl anyway, I'm a picky eater so just ate around the mushroom, red onion, scallions and leaks. Okay, a small part of the bowl, but the rest was SO good! Great flavor with a little kick. My husband loved it too (as is not picky like me). Our daughter got the chicken sandwich and said it was very good. The only thing I didn't care for was we were the last table eating outside and they basically shut the other tables (with lighted umbrellas) so it got a bit dark as we waited to pay the bill. It's a little weird and there are homes nearby that made it feel a little weirder. I understand they wanted to close up, but they could've waited 10 minutes.

Disappointing lunch

We have been eating here since they opened many years ago, and this is the first time that the food was disappointing. Our server, Savannah, was attentive without being overbearing, so no complaints there. My husband's fish sandwich was definitely made with frozen fish, not fresh. At the beach, you expect fresh fish. And my Big Wave Dave chicken sandwich was overcooked and dry. I get it every time we eat here and this time is was not up to par. French fries were very good though. We probably won't come back the next time we visit.

Great food

We’ve been a handful of times and have enjoyed each time. The bowls are always good and fresh, bloody Mary’s Sunday’s and fried chicken Monday’s. I haven’t tried the fried chicken yet but it’s gets huge reviews for best around. Can’t wait to get there again, probably later this week.

Variety and great service

They are definitely taking social distancing protocols seriously here. Tables are well spread out from each other, and with the seating area on multiple levels, plus some outside if you like, you’re not in close quarters at all. We had chips and queso to start (only $4!), and then each had an Asian fusion entree. There was definitely a variety on the menu, so everyone will find something they like. Portions are generous enough that we both had food to take home, so you won’t go hungry. The service was prompt, and we didn’t wait long at all for our entrees. Would definitely return.

Good place to wait until rentals open up

Stopped here for lunch while waiting for our rental house to open up at 4pm. Service was top notch. Extremely friendly. When my wife's side dish of beans were cold, the waitress kindly took the cost of her lunch off the check.

Best Value on the OBX

Rundown Cafe opened for the 2020 season today under new ownership. The restaurant has been redecorated very nicely while preserving the feel and vibe that made it popular for 28 years. There are new menus featuring some new dishes while keeping the favorite. The bar menu has been upgraded with a good selection of wines and of course all the special drinks. Today was Bloody Mary Sunday and was it ever good. An excellent drink topped with a “Big Mac” slider. It was almost a full meal itself and a bargain price. So good I had to have two! The Cafe was hopping today and Fried Chicken Mondays start tomorrow! We’ll be back often!

Not good!!

We are local and love to support our local restaurants! This experience, however was terrible! I was hoping for sooo much more! Four of us came to the Grand Opening and understood they were still working out the kinks. So we tried again and this time we had a table of 8. We watched, half of, our tables food sit up at the counter for 15 minutes, obviously it was all cold when it arrived. Soo after arrival everyone was done eating, however, my husband and I still had not received our dinner. We are 2 hours in by now, yall. We got there at 3pm, so not at lunch or dinner hour rush. I know everyone is short staffed and i am sensitive to that as a customer. However the owner, who was watching our table once she realized we had been there so long, never once came and apologized for the service we received. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be going back.

Could be Better

It’s a very cute place with friendly staff. I’ve dined inside before a few yrs ago and enjoyed the meal. This time I wanted to add to a dinner at home and got the seafood soup. Out of all this fish in the sea, in a beautiful coastal region how did tilapia become the featured fish in this chowder? We got the coconut shrimp app to share for $12 and it only had 4 medium shrimp and a large serving of soggy coleslaw that was too spicy. The dessert to share was about $8 or $10 (I tossed the receipt) was a huge letdown. The menu said pistachio cake with blackberry topping. It was a very small slice. My complaint is really about value and I feel my $29 plus tip for take out was not a good value. I’ll most likely go back at some point in future years but will opt to dine inside.

Needs better lunch choices

I’ve been coming here for years and I don’t understand the hype about this place. First, it Needs better lunch choices. Most of the options consists of a taco or it’s a fried item of some sort. I got the fish tacos—very underwhelmed. Fried tuna with not good slaw and a sauce that overtook the flavor. Hubby got the fried mahi po boy and if was fried, pre purchased fish pieces. I know this because they were all uniform in size and shape, and they were the exact same ones that another local eatery uses. Not a coincidence. Service was great. No complaints.

Not the Rundown of past years

We’ve eaten at the rundown for over 20 years, and ownership and staff has come and gone as expected. But the hostess, who said it was her first day there, was just plain gross. Her hair was filthy grungy, she had dirty nails over an inch long and was wearing dirty sneakers. Not a great first impression, even with staff shortages. Two in our party got the sesame noodles. They’ve always been spicy hot, but these were inedible because of the heat. To be fair, the waiter brought my adult daughter another meal and didn’t charge her for the noodles, but by then everyone else (except my husband who was struggling to eat his own spicy noodles) was finished. We’ve gotten these for years…but these aren’t even close to the same heat level. The coconut chicken was the only good thing we had. We were really disappointed with the meal, but the place was busy, so we may be in the minority. We won’t be going back.

Disappointing Experience

We arrived early before any crowd seated upstairs. Waitress greeted us took drink orders and appetizer order, then we asked about items on the menu she seem like in a hurry the whole visit. The appetizer, Fish bites was pieces of tuna & mahi mahi not very impressive. Mahi Mahi taco were awful, cold just small amount of mahi fish, cabbage, crema, hamburger and fries what not great either. Waitress returned got dishes and brought the bill never checked on us and did not ask if there was anything else. Rundown was always one of our favorites when we go to OBX . We will not be returning !

Alwayys delicious

As usual we went twice this week. Monday for their fried chicken (off season only). Absolutely the best southern green beans I have ever eaten, Even better than last year. The collards too were seasoned perfectly. Delicious corn bread. We went back and had the Thai Lemongrass with Ahi Tuna. My husband proclaimed this to be delicious. My Asian Sesame noodles with coconut shrimp was amazing, I try to mimic this at home but can't get it quite this good. The mojitos were mixed perfectly and very refreshing. Everyone was masked and tables spaced a good ways apart. We always recommend this place to others when they come.

Excellent tacos!

My husband and I came here for dinner. The outside seating at the deck was full and it was way too hot to eat in the back at the picnic tables, so we ate inside. It wasn’t busy around 5:00 so there was no wait. Workers were wearing masks and tables were spaced out. We got a table with an ocean view. My husband and I both ordered tacos- he got steak and I got chicken. We got tortilla chips and queso as an app. Everything was excellent! We will definitely be back next year!
