My wife and I came to Kinston for the weekend mostly to go to Chef and the Farmer because we love the TV show and had heard good things. We wanted to love it, but found it to be very hit-and-miss. The more I think about it, there are just some very strange choices about the restaurant in general. 1... More

Ever since I stumbled on to "A Chef's Life" on PBS some two years ago, I've wanted to go to Vivian Howard's restaurant, "Chef and The Farmer." Its 250 miles from home but we finally made the pilgrimage. I was worried that it wouldn't meet the expectations I had created... you look at the menu online and, it is different.... More

Any time I can eat at the Chef and the Farmer it is exquisite and always enjoyable. I love the atmosphere and the food is delectable to say the least. Worth the prices for a special occasion.

I've been to the Chef and the Farmer many times over the years and I've had many fantastic meals there. I've also had a few average meals and a one or two bad ones. When a restaurant changes the menu as often as this one does, using local, seasonal, ingredients sometimes a not-so-perfect dish slips out of the kitchen before... More

A weekend get away...and so well worth it! Stayed at the O'Neil Hotel...directly across the street. So walked over to a restaurant that would be on a top list in a major city; but glad it's here....relying on local food sources...and that's the touch stone to this place....great food and local specialties brought to outsiders to experience.Fried okra with ranch... We snagged a reservation and a babysitter and headed out on a two hour trip to Kinston. We have been watching the TV show since the beginning, so we had a pretty good idea what we were getting into. We were excited to see some local "celebrities", both Ben and farmer Warren were at the restaurant that night. Even more... More

Everyone has heard of Chef and the Farmer and Vivian Howard, coming down to her hometown from NYC to share her eclectic and creative culinary skills. It's on the radar of so many people that you have to make reservations well in advance - no just stopping by on your way to the beach even on a weeknight. The restaurant... More

Drove 100 miles round trip in order to eat here. As with previous reviewers, we came here with high expectations after watching the PBS show. The meals are superb & creative. We started with the wood fired flatbread with apples smoked chicken cheddar & arugula. Wonderful. Husband ordered the slow roasted fresh ham which he said was prepared the way... More

I could go on and on about the food here and how much I'm a super fan of Chef Vivian Howard. Just know it's worth every penny. Down right delicious and creative. Yes it's expensive, but you pay for what you get and you won't be disappointed. Great service. It is upscale dining, but with a really relaxed atmosphere.

We went to Chef and the Farmer with hopes of a great experience but prepared for an over-hyped venue with so-so food. We found the former, thankfully. The facility is different than might be expected for a restaurant with "the farmer" in its title--a very modern, almost contemporary chic establishment with plenty of nice art. The bar is solid, and... More
