After a long day Thursday, I wanted something good for dinner instead of going back to the hotel. I drove up Hughes Avenue for a bit, passed this place going up and made a mental note.
As I was coming back down the road, I...saw their sign on the shoulder that said something to the effect; "Wanted: Hungry People" and below that "Buffet". I thought, what the heck and pulled in.
Now, from outward appearances I could tell this wasn't a new building and the thought was confirmed when I walked in. Although it is an older building was easily overlooked when I saw the buffet bar. Granted, it isn't a Golden Corral scale, but that made it more enticing.
I was looking at the assorted dishes when the waitress walked up and asked if I'd like a table to which I quickly agreed.
My first trip was fried chicken, mac and cheese, okra and tomatoes and lima beans. Imagine my shock when I tasted each item and discovered it was all home made! The mac and cheese was the oven baked variety that I grew up with and still love to this day though rarely find in restaurants. The fried chicken was seasoned to mildly spicy perfection, the okra and tomatoes hit my soul like an unexpected surprise, the limas were as good as any I have eaten anywhere.
My second plate consisted of more mac and cheese, another piece of fried chicken, more okra and tomatoes, pole beans with white shoe-peg corn I spooned over top and homemade meatballs with onions and brown gray. Again, everything was made with love that came through every bite. The meatballs fooled me in the fact they were actually ground beef and not a soy-based store bought imitation.
My only regret was I didn't have room for the big pot of butter beans simmering in a soup pot at the end of the bar, or for the potato salad and macaroni salad.
If I'm ever in Elizabeth City again, I will have dinner here every night!More
