My daughter and I had the best dining experience. Helpful, cordial, and pleasant staff. the food was to die for. if described as excellent, it would be an understatement. Thankyou for all your efforts.

Really enjoyed my meal - very small interior so I was at a center table at the kitchen door which was not the best, but the servers were so kind and efficient that I really did not notice the awkward location. I ordered a drink...which was prepared perfectly - brandy alexander. For dinner I followed the lead of many other reviewers and ordered the shrimp and grits. My dinner was excellent. The restaurant was clean with a good sani grade from the state!! The restroom was also clean. The only reason for four stars instead of five is that parking is very limited and, at night, it's hard to actually pick out the sign which indicates the restaurant. I ended up parking on the street about three blocks away. I will definitely eat here when I return to Elizabeth City.More

We were very excited to try this restaurant as it came highly recommended by the gentleman at our hotel; however, if you have more than four people in your party, don’t bother. They turned us away as soon as we opened the door, and the...hostess was not pleasant about it.More

Friendly staff, menu quite varied. Spouse enjoyed the black-eyed pea addition to the shrimp and grits; the onion rings were awesome (best I've ever had), my pasta/shrimp entree was delicious. Good serving sizes. The red velvet cake with cheesecake middle layer was to die for....YUM!More

Nice local spot. Awesome bar service. Definitely would go back. You can eat inside or outside in the alley, which is a neat atmosphere.

Stopped here with my wife for dinner while driving through the area, and glad we did. Ambience is quaint and outdoor seating is available. Service is excellent - we were pleasantly greeted/taken to our table and then again by our server, Lynda, a pro if...we ever met one. With her input, I settled on something I don’t usually order, the pork chop on a bed of risotto with spinach on the side; my wife ordered the Shrimp Creole. Both meals were outstanding. I ordered a locally made (as in, right down the street) Ghost Harbor Blonde Ale - cold quite refreshing, perfect for a hot day. We aim to return!More

AMAZING is just one word to describe the food. From the catfish fingers, egg rolls, Carolina Caviar, Burgers and the shrimp and grits (best I’ve EVER had) can’t wait to come back. Great portions, prices, atmosphere and food. 🐟🥗🍤🍔

My family and I spent a few nights in Elizabeth City, NC before heading for a week at the Outer Banks on a large family vacation. My favorite meal of the entire trip was courtesy of Hoppin' Johnz, our first night in Elizabeth City. This...restaurant was just a few blocks from our rental home in downtown Elizabeth City. We arrived just before their dinner rush on a Friday evening and were immediately seated at a high top near the bar. Soon after the host was letting other parties know that it was going to be a 30-40 minute wait for a table. To start we ordered the fried green tomatoes ($12). The server kindly let us know that the serving size was 3 and offered that we could add another to our order so each member of our family could have their own. There was no way my son was going to try these, so we just stuck with the standard order. Hoppin' Johnz is self-described as new south cuisine, and I think that description fits it well.  These tomatoes were fried in cornmeal and topped with country ham, pimento cheese, and pepper jelly. I have never seen fried green tomatoes presented this way, but they were extremely good! For dinner, I had the heritage farms pork barbecue topped with new south slaw and eastern NC barbecue sauce ($11 with choice of side). The pork was full of a nice smokey flavor, while the new south slaw had a welcome addition of sweet peppers that really made it stand out. On the side, I enjoyed the Brussels sprout slaw which was mostly sweet in flavor thanks to the dried cranberry addition. It was a great meal and a ton of food for the price tag! My wife enjoyed the classic Chesapeake crab cake sandwich, which is a blue crab cake, that was topped with lettuce, tomato, and remoulade ($14 with choice of side). She commented that the crab cake was one of the best she had. And she also enjoyed the side of sweet potato fries dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with apple butter. The restaurant is totally kid-friendly. I can't remember exactly what our's had, but I think there was at least pasta and a burger on the menu. That's what I remember my kids enjoying anyway. Overall this is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner and has to be among the best in Elizabeth City.More

Good menu and reasonable priced. We chose Shrimp & Grits and was pleasantly surprised with the combination of ingredients. The taste was great and from the picture, I need to say no more….

In the heart of Elizabeth City's small and trying to come to life downtown, this place adds character and spirit. A variety of menu items (not pub food) were great. Heard the burgers were awesome. We tried a Hoppin' Jonz special and Gumbo - both...delicious. Creative cocktails with old time favorites. Friendly and attentive staffMore

The atmosphere is wonderful!!! We are inside because it was too warm to sit outside - which is in Pailin’s Alley. The service was great. Food tasted wonderful - with minor exceptions. Bacon cheeseburger came with bone tiny slice of bacon. Turkey Melt Hammie didn’t...have the bacon jam (was really curious what that was going to be … guess I’ll never know 🤣) and smokehouse burger with no bbq sauce. Still all good tasted wonderful. The shrimp and grits … omg - perfect!!! Highly recommend. And their lemonade was fresh and crisp. Will definitely go back - maybe because we were there an hour before closing it was a couple misses.More

This was our first time at Hoppin’ Johnz and what a great find! A quaint spot to meet our daughter for lunch and drinks since we live in the Tidewater area and she lives in Hertford, NC. Everything we ordered was delish! The fried green...tomatoes are topped with ham and pimento cheese, definitely a plus and so tasty! Our daughter had the fish & chips (had enough to take some home for later), hubs had the crab cake sandwich with fries and I had the arugula salad with salmon, all top notch! They have a cute patio for outside dining as well as a full bar! We certainly recommend Hoppin’ Johnz and plan to return!More

Read reviews so we went to visit. Nice place, greeted by a nice lady, looking so forward to eating here but—- not so happy. We ordered, obviously ordered the wrong thing. My husband got fish and chips. Waitress asked what side? So he said cucumber...salad, after I too had ordered cucumber salad. His meal came, cod fish, two small pieces, obviously deep fried frozen, on a piece of lettuce, No chips. ??? Just cucumber salad, which was tasty by the way. Sooooo, fish and chips, no chips. We asked, she said you ordered cucumber salad for your side. Well isn’t that like ordering a hot dog and receiving it with no bun??? I ordered catfish sandwich, not good at all, but we were hungry and service after we ordered was soooo slow, we just ate it and shut up. Sure would have liked a refill of ice tea also since we waited so much time for our food. Not even asked. Not asked if we wanted dessert either. So, nice atmosphere, not good food. Guess we ordered the wrong thing. We won’t be going back.More

Truly an unacceptable experience and side confusion is absurd. Would like to know more about your server and would love to have you back as my guest. Call the restaurant and ask fir Jim or leave a message. We are so much better than this....More
