OMG! The BEST BEST food ever! And so much fun- we were a group of 7, we didn’t want to eat indoors ( Not doing that yet b/c of Covid ) and Dice set us up with chairs outside! We had the best time and...to a person thought it was the best bar b que ever. Don’t miss the black eyed peas! Each meat was better than the one before. ( we all shared so we had many tastes, chicken, ribs, brisket even cat fish.). We will always go there on all future trips to Durham. Forget the ambiance, there isn’t any, but believe me you won’t care once you take your 1st bite.More

Best BBQ I have ever tasted, and I have made it my business to sample many around the country - Texas, California, Chicago, Virginia, North Carolina, etc. Not only is the food amazing but the people are very friendly and welcoming. The physical restaurant leaves...much to be improved, but the food, hospitality and variety are not equaled anywhere else in my experience, pork, beef, fish, chicken, turkey, and don’t miss the hush puppies. Don’t miss it!More

Chopped barbeque didn't have any smoke flavor, and was kinda wet. The mac n cheese was swimming in grease, and it didn't even have that much cheese. The restaurant seemed dirty inside...like greasy. The staff was kinda rude to each other, and the cashier didn't...have a mask over her nose or mouth, and then was getting really close to customers to ask questions about what their order was because it was loud in there. It was a chaotic ordering process, and the food didn't make up for it.More

We tried this restaurant on the recommendations of a local. Everyone in our party ordered the brisket. It was tender and moist, but was served in a beef jus or gravy that made it taste more like pot roast. There was a hint of smoke,...and good seasoning, but not like BBQ flavors I'm used to. Sides were tasty, but a bit too sweet for the baked beans and the brunswick stew.More

We were in the area for the day and wanted to grab dinner before heading home. We read the excellent reviews on Backyard BBQ Pit and were really excited to try some delicious home cooking. We got in line and everything looked promising until we...saw that out of the five employees working only one had on a mask. The cashier technically had one on but it was only over her mouth (which is essentially the same as not wearing a mask). We were very surprised as there was a sign on the door saying all customers must wear masks. Kind of hard to demand customers wear masks when they aren't leading by example. So, unfortunately, we left.More

My husband and I moved to Chapel Hill in March and have been mostly in the house since everything was being shut down at that time so we’ve been so ready to get out and experience something good here in the Triangle area. Our son...called from Florida and said go try backyard barbecue was listed as the best in NC and I’m so glad we did this is southern soul cooking at its very best And the staff is on point they make you feel so at home and they even gave us a sampler of the meats while we decided. We got a rib dinner with collards and potato salad a flounder diner with collards and Mac n cheese a side of barbecue turkey and pork and hush puppies I have nothing bad to say about any of it their food is excellent and they have excellent customer service and very good pricing for their menu and they are very generous with the servings. I will be back and recommend this barbecue restaurant to anyone who loves good old southern soul food this place is the best. GjrMore

I ordered a fried shrimp plate and the shrimp are huge, with a hefty portion. The mac and cheese was decent, but needed to be a tad bit creamier. However, the yams are delicious. I'll definitely give them another try in the future!

Fans of the Food Trilogy will understand. I've visited the area a few times, and as a rule I eschew chain establishments to try the local fare. This place validates the rule. On my first of several visits, I was overwhelmed by the variety of...choices: brisket, pork, chicken, fish, and an assortment of sides. Even after enjoying the samples freely offered by the gentleman behind the counter, I couldn't decide, so I did the logical thing: I ordered one of everything (and besides, I was hungry). The staff was amused but indulged me. I can't say a bad thing about any of the menu items -- they're all superb. It's on a busy road (and getting busier, thanks to all the housing developments), and you'll undoubtedly irritate the driver behind you as you slow, looking for the entrance. There is no ambiance, but you don't come here for that. You come for the BBQ, and it's outstanding. The staff is friendly and good-natured, almost making you wish that you lived near enough to make this a regular stop. If you happen to drive past, do yourself a favor and turn around, even in traffic -- it's that good.More

As European folks we were very amazed about the location and the look and feel of it. It is really like a garage or backyard of somebody private. We had some difficulties to understand the menu but the people are so friendly to help out....The dishes, especially the pork and turkey, were so good. And the mac and cheese is also very good. Going out here really fills the bellies. Nice to get acquinted with typical local food and service.More

This is the best BBQ I have had since moving to Raleigh 4 years ago. In fact, it is the best BBQ I've had since 1986 in Dallas, Texas, but that is another story. Anyway, this is down home Southern cooking at its best. The...ribs are falling off the bone moist and delicious. The hash is wonderful. All their sides are remarkable, including their little rolls, which to me were like a cross between a hush puppy and a roll. Sooo good. Also, a nice customer shared their tradition for making your own BBQ sauce. First you fill a sauce cup about 2/3 full with the vinegar base, then add a little of the dark sauce for sweetness, and then a little of the hot pepper sauce for heat. YUM! I've eaten in a lot of fancy Raleigh BBQ places that don't hold a candle to this place. I got about 3 days worth of food and took it home. This is one of those little hidden gems, nothing fancy, that simply make the most wonderful food you have ever eaten. If you live in the Triangle area, this is where you need to be getting your BBQ. If you are visiting here, this is where you go for good ole Southern BBQ and sides. Rarely do I find a restaurant these days where literally everything is good, but Backyard BBQ is one of them.More

Not what it used to be. My pork bbq had no smoke flavor at all - clearly not pit-cooked over hickory and oak as claimed. And they have added chopped onion to the slaw - yuk! Lesson from today - unsmoked pork and raw onions...do not work together. Still like the sauces which were needed in large quantities to add flavor and drown out the onions. I have been a customer for several years, but will not be back.More
