Did takeout of sweet and sour shrimp and spicy fish. First had little taste and was overly breaded. Second was in greasy broth and I ended up throwing it out. Last time I did takeout of different dishes and they forgot to include the rice....I won’t be returning.More

Hey everyone! This was our only place to get the best Chinese food in the Durham area. I know everyone has an opinion about was is "The Best". BUT. We all know what a BAD meal is. (UN)FORTUNATELY The Happy China has met that defination...with a 5***** rating. By far this has been the best of worst take out experience there for us in 3 years. The Generals Chicken was completely (UN)EDIBLE. What we refer to as HOOD meal. HARD/OLD/OVERCOOKED/DRY. We had been ordering The Generals Chicken nearly every week for some 3 years. Some great meals. Sometimes just average, but never ever like this. In times like these when customers are at a premium to visit or take out your product, you really have no excuse for a poor quality product. You guys need to refocus on your skills and game plan. Your name is not making your food its premium product. Its your performance at what you do best with the best ingredients that make it your premium product. Take care of your customers. They will always be back. When all this chaos is over, we shall return to see if yours has as well. BE SAFE.More

Happy China was our go-to restaurant for authentic Chinese cuisine. I don't know if they changed ownership, but it is definitely not the same food as it was before. We ordered takeout the other night and I told the man who took our order to...put hot mustard in for the soup, THREE TIMES! He said yes, yes, yes, and of course when my husband brought it home, no hot mustard. They don't have the delicious pork ribs anymore and the Kung Po chicken was tasteless and dry. The soup had no flavor and the fried dumplings were so greasy, they were inedible. That's it for this place, we will never go back.More

We stopped to have an early dinner on our way home from a medical appointment. It was about 4:30 so we deduced that the food they served had been (barely) warmed over from lunch. The rice was very dry. We both ordered Szechuan dishes so...expected at least a little heat and spice but they were both bland and dried out with no sauces. They were also fried which wasn’t mentioned in the menu. Our steamed dumplings were tasty but very small. Our waiter was pleasant but brought the wrong wine, Sauvignon blanc as opposed to what we ordered, Cabernet Sauvignon, despite our correcting him 3 times. The greeting when we came in was nonexistent; in fact the host seemed displeased to see us. No “thank you for coming” when we left. We read about it the restaurant in the N&O and it seemed to be recommended by Greg Coxe. But, we will never go back.More

Stand alone restaurant located near the end of 15/501 at University Drive. Plenty of parking and open until 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Had a rice noodle dish with veggie, shrimp, chicken and pork and an egg roll. Egg roll is small and simple,...cabbage only....Noodle dish was a very good portion and seasoned well. Did not need anything to go with it and was surprised at the amount of shrimp. Very flavorful and both came out hot (a plus for me!) and quick. Service was a young girl named Yan and was very good when I asked questions regarding the menu, being a first timer. She later came back and brought me a take out menu and we once again went over some of the selections. It is rare that a server is so kind to a lady alone...we are usually ignored. Her kindness and professionalism was really appreciated. Place was clean, menu is huge and there were both booths and tables. I will return!More

I think it is a good sign when more than 50 percent of a Chinese restaurant's diners are Asian. That's the case here. In fact, an Asian friend was the first person who turned me on to Happy China. The food here is very good....And, they are willing to tweak dishes if you have weird requests. For instance, I like fried rice made with brown rice. They have no problem with complying with my request. My test at a Chinese restaurant is Mapo Tofu. Their version is dead on - the right amount of spice and sauce, with just a touch of pork for season. I stop here often on my way home. They are also really quick, which is nice when picking up takeout.More

The food is fantastic. They are very busy. Relax, and know that dishes come out when ready, not necessarily all at once for the entire table. If you want apps before dinner, definately order them earlier.

I liked the spicy food here, with chicken, beef, and fish the best. However the portion is a little small.

Happy China is located in a convenient, middle-class part of the town. Its menu is heavily Sichuan, but really a pan-Southern China kind of food, in a good way though. Most dishes on the menu are reliably good, hold well with the Turing-test watermark of...authentic traditional Chinese food... and good for a picky solo diner, or a group of open-minded friends, or an opinionated family...More
