I was extremely disappointed with this restaurant. Three of us decided to eat at Fat Crabs because we heard the food was excellent. We walked in at around 4:45pm and we waited a few minutes for the hostess to show up. When she did finally...show up, she seemed like she was annoyed we were there. She told us that they have no tables inside but we could sit outside. It was hot so we said we prefer to be inside. She told us to wait a minute while she went to check on something. She informed us she they only had one table for four and they has just got their appetizer, so it would probably be a 45 minute. The whole time she was talking to us, it was if she was bored. Needless to say we left. A man stopped me in the parking lot and said he experienced the same, but decided to sit at the bar. He did say the food was very good, so I was not happy that we had to find another place.More

This was a nice find for a restaurant. I was looking for something on the water which was not possible. I was told their bbq is what they are known for, however we all had seafood. I had oyster po-boy, they were fresh and served...hot. I also had 6 wings, a nice smoke to them and of them a good size. Others had Alaskan steamer, scallops, fish and chips and fish tacos. Every was happy. They had a good beer menu. Service was good. This is a good find close to lighthouse.More

This is always a place for us when we want fresh seafood. This trip we visited three times and each time the servers and hostess were so kind and attentive even when it was crazy busy! It does have a tendency to get really busy...and crowded, so place a to go order-order early in the afternoon and pick up for dinner and enjoy Easy peasy!More

My wife and I have enjoyed Fat Crabs for over 12 years since building a home in Corolla and having been long time residents. The food was excellent. I had pulled pork which is my favorite and my wife had the catch of the day....The atmosphere is very informal. Diners are given rolls of paper towel instead of a place mat and and napkins. All good, though. Were this visit earned only two stars, was the incident with the cashier when we were checking out. There is a custom in the Outer Banks for local residents to receive a discount-anywhere from 10-15%-when dining at a local restaurant and when I asked our waitress if Fat Crabs did, she told us they did and she would tell the cahier to give us the discount since it was not shown on our bill. When I wen to pay and told the cashier-a burly guy with black hair and beard-he challenged me on the discount and said in a load voice, "I don't know you." When I told him again that were were local and even gave him our Corolla address, he become more belligerent and said in an even loader voice, "I DONT KNOW YOU!". Needless to say, it was an embarrassing moment and ruined an otherwise good dining experience at Fat Crabs. Note to owner: 1) Fire or redeploy your cashier away from customers; 2) give him training in dealing with customers. He ruined what otherwise was an enjoyable experience at the restaurant.More

Thank you so much for the wonderful experience our dogs and us had while spending our weekend at Corolla, NC. Your kindness and hospitality are greatly appreciated. The ribs were delicious and if our doggies could talk they would probably agree with me as they...enjoyed the brisket and chicken. Great atmosphere and service!More

This wasn't on our original list of planned food stops for our women's tour group but someone sent us there and it was a great choice. Very casual, great atmosphere, good staff--efficient and friendly-- and quick service. Seafood was fresh and varied and reasonably priced....Highly recommend this place--almost felt like we were in Margaritaville.More

The best steamed shrimp I ever had! While I have had steamed shrimp as I live on the east coast their shrimp were steamed with just enough seasoning to make it thoroughly delicious without being too spicy. I also had the mussels and pulled chicken....Both were wonderful. Did pick up order and was hot and right on time. Friendly staff A must stop to eat in or pick up while I’m Corolla.More

The food was wonderful, but beyond that, the staff went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. When one plate was sent out ahead of the others, the chef felt so bad that he gave us a complimentary appetizer. (And we...didn’t complain or mind at all about the timing). This is truly a place that cares about their work and their customers. Please support them!More

I’m shocked to see this place so highly rated. Our server was horrible, and the food was mediocre at best. We tried to ask several questions and the server would cut us off and not answer them. We had a shrimp allergy in our party...and the server made a point to criticize her for her decision to come to the restaurant, as if there’s a single restaurant in the area without shrimp (we brought it up so nothing would touch her plate, since they ARE NOT able to accommodate allergies- important to know before you go). She was fine to not eat anything until we got back to our house, but the waitress sold her on an $8 salad (the size of maybe a fist, with Wilty lettuce and radishes) with nothing appetizing about it (after she was asked what was on the salad, and again ignored the question). I couldn’t recommend this place less, except for the fact that their Mac and cheese was not Kraft, so that was a positive.More

They guys working there were really nice but our waitress was rude and miserable. Don't ask her what drinks are available she says look at the drink menu online. Any question or request seemed to annoy her. It was really busy and it's small inside....Our wait was 1hr and we waited 1.5 hours. No biggie because the one guy kept us updated which I appreciated. The food was not bad. I sampled a little of everyone's. Brisket cheese steak was the best. The bbq sampler was ok. Shrimp a little overcooked but scallops were good. Crab dip was good too. Loved the crunchy pita chips.More

Wanted seafood, so the tacos were nice, great filling and a fried mahi. We shared those and a smoked pastrami Reuben.. the meat was some of the best pastrami ever!(and I’m a NYer). The kitchen is fairly open and I nodded to the chefs. They...didn’t look up right away as I was leaving (it wasn’t crowded, they were sitting by the bar) and I said “great meal, thanks guys”. I gained 3 new friends. They told me how much they really appreciated the kind word as most people don’t acknowledge them. I can’t wait to go back and sample some of their smoked on premises barbecue.More

We decided to try Fat Crabs and Ribs Company while vacationing in North Corolla. Since we were a group of 9, we called to see if we could get a reservation. They do not take reservations and could not guarantee we would be able to...sit together. We arrived around 5:45pm on a Tuesday night. We were given a 45 minute wait time. While we were waiting, the hostess came outside to give us an update on the table. She told us they would be able to seat us together but to allow a 10 minute wait to get the table ready. When we were seated, the hostess gave us the specials of the night. There is a bar that serves wine and beer. Our waitress, Angie, went over and above to serve us. We tried the special Buffalo shrimp as an appetizer. We also had the hush puppies and calamari. Three of us ordered the brisket cheesesteak sandwich, which was delicious. Four of us ordered the steamed mule’s delight, which was well cooked and seasoned well. The last in our party ordered the burger, which was good.More

We were excited to try this place, however the food was average. The barbeque platter lacked flavor, I had to add a ton of the sauces from the table (though maybe that was the point). One in the party had the crabs and enjoyed them....The other two in the party had sandwiches which also were okay.More
