This tiny, unpretentious restaurant has excellent food and friendly service. I was by myself and had a few appetizers for lunch. Try the Ethiopian cheese with collard greens. Amazing.

My first experience with Ethiopian food. We had a takeout order. The lamb and chicken dishes were ok, the wet beef was excellent. The bread was different, not to my taste.
I love Ethiopian food, so I decided to take my husband out here to try something. We enjoyed the tibbs and Kitfo! The coffee was also one of a kind. The services were GREAT! It felt like a little piece of Ethiopian in a huge...city. We will definitely return!More
We’re back visiting for a few weeks, and one of the things I was most looking forward to was visiting Abugida! Their food is spot on delicious every time. I love the Doro Wet and the Abugida Feast. Their injera is light, tangy and completely...addicting. Customer service is excellent - whenever I order online they always call to confirm my order, which I find really thoughtful.More
We really enjoyed our dinner. The waiter was extremely helpful in helping us decide what to order. It was wonderful. Highly recommend.
This is absolutely the best Ethiopian restaurant we have ever been to! The food was delicious...get the Abugida feast! The service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. It is 1 mile south of the main area of Plaza Midwood. It is...amazing. Go!More
I came in to Abugida just to get a cafe, or something close to Cuban cafe. I went in to Abugida to find it. Went you walk in they make you feel like an old friend. The staff is knowledgeable and explained their products in...detail, patiently and carefully. I came in to get good cafe. The staff explained Ethiopian cafe. How its made? It was the closest I ever came to a tea ceremony for cafe. I loved it. P.S. The cafe was great!!!More
I went with a couple friends to try this spot out. We ordered the vegetable feast and Derek beef tibs. The vegetable platter came with yellow peas, collard greens, cabbage, potato, red lentils and green beans. We liked all 6 and kept debating which ones...we liked the best- we thought the red lentils and yellow peas were the winners but would order the whole platter again. The tibs were overcooked unfortunately. They were very dry, chewy and not seasoned at all so it was a bit disappointing with that dish. All in all, we'd all go back and possibly try a different meat dish.More
This place feels very authentic and the service is very nice. The chef came to our table to explain the food and everything was delicious. It was fun to share this experience with friends, trying different flavors and learning about different cultures through food.
My boyfriend lived in Ethiopia and was impressed with the authenticity of the menu at this restaurant, so we decided to try the lunch when we were in Charlotte. Both the food and service were fabulous! We will definitely eat here again.
The food here is so fresh and delicious. The lunch buffet was $10 and included a beef, a chicken, and about 6 different vegetable dishes. I forgot that you use the rolled bread as your vessel to eat with, but the bread is awesome too....The spices are delicious and not too hot or overpowering. Get past eating with your hands and try the traditional restaurant. I will be back again soon.More
After noticing that Abugida got high marks from CLT Agenda for their food... we decided to truck up there and check it out. the owner was very helpful, and even though we had no idea what we were getting other than it was vegetarian... we...looked forward to it. The 'sponge' bread that seems to be served with everything is used to sop up any of the variety of vegetables (or meats) that you choose on the menu as a combination. the tastes were excellent... some spicy... some not... All good. As a Coffee-Holic .. I had to try Ethiopian Coffee.... Absolutely Fabulous. Beans are roasted and ground TO ORDER!. Best espresso I ever had... anywhere. I'd go back just to have a coffee in the middle of the AM or afternoon.More
Wow! This dining experience transported me to a different land. I left Charlotte and went straight to Ethiopia! After reading the glowing YELP Reviews, this place became a priority for me. So much to review. First the menu and food - extremely different than American...fare, based on presentation and FLAVORS. I had the vegetable plate which was a sampling of many kinds of vegetables. It was served with a basket of rolled up spongy bread. Because there are no utensils, the bread is unrolled and used to scoop up the food. This takes practice and getting used to. The experience was fascinating, but probably not good for someone trying to avoid bread. I feel confident that utensils would have been available upon request, however my recommendation is to experience Ethiopian food the way that the natives eat it! The iced tea had strong hints of Cinnamon and ginger and was simply delicious. The entire meal woke up every taste bud in my mouth. Atmosphere - very warm colors and artwork that added to the feeling of being in Ethiopia. There was only one other table of people dining for lunch today and when they left, we had the entire restaurant to ourselves. It was a pleasant and comfortable space. Service - impeccable. The waiter was as hospitable as it gets. Explained all the menu options and helped us understand the technique for eating the food. His native accent also added to the feeling of being outside of Charlotte. So, in summation, I loved the experience and so glad that Charlotte has another dining option that is not a boring chain restaurant. For those reading this review, GO CHECK OUT THIS PLACE! Three thumbs up!More
We ate here for the first time a couple of weeks ago, & it was our first Ethiopian restaurant visit since leaving the DC area. Everything was very good & on par with our previous experiences. Highly recommended but note they do not sell alcohol.
This is a delightful new (about 5 months) restaurant that opened up here in Charlotte, NC. I learned about it by reading a good "Creative Loafing" article titled "Keeping Things Fresh: Abugida family continues to expand with new Ethiopian grocery. The restaurant is in a...house that has been converted into a restaurant; this gives it a very cozy feel. This visit was my third time eating Ethiopian food, and it was by far the best I have had. The people there are extremely nice; there are Ethiopian cultural items, including their alphabet on a wall. I got the vegetarian plate, which was very good. In addition to Injera bread, it had the following items: very spicy, delicious lentil dish, a potato dish, greens, and three other items I can't remember. They have their coffee ceremony, which I haven't tried yet, but which I think is very important to their culture. The next time I go I will order just the spicy lentils and the greens - yum, yum! They can make their bread gluten-free, for those of you with gluten sensitivity. This place is a great find, and good for vegans and vegetarians and omnivores alike.More
