Small college town (UNC-CH) restaurant. We have tried Shrimp and Grits in many East Coast places. Crooks Corner outdoes all others. Preparation, presentation and TASTE are the best ever. This place requires many more visits. And don't miss out on the Bananna Pudding.

Jalapeño hush puppies and the cracker plate with green pepper jelly are excellent. Shrimp and grits are a well known favorite. NC King mackerel with leeks and cabbage were fabulous. Dessert was lemon lime pie with saltine crust and whipped cream. All spectacular.

I am shocked at some of the less than stellar recent reviews for this great restaurant. My wife and I took our UNC son for dinner in mid May and had by far the best meal that I've had in Chapel Hill (and by now,...More

We hadn't been to Crook's Corner for several years and it seemed to be unchanged. Zip atmosphere but good Southern food. Two of us had the classic, the original, the superb shrimp and grits, each an ENORMOUS serving. Our third diner had the in-season softshell...More

When we first walked in, the first feel was what a super cool place. We had a group of 5, had a reservation and was seated in their very unique outdoor area. Ordered our meals, and I had a steak and frites dish that was...More

I really like shrimp and grits - and this is at least “tied for first” as the best I’ve ever had. Different than others - full of shrimp, and covered with mushrooms and scallions. And a bit of zip to it! Wonderful. Lemon pie quite...More

A tiny little restaurant serving great shrimp and grits and other dishes with southern flair. Great taste and great service. Definitely worth the trip and if you like shrimp and grits this is the place. Best I ever had.

My husband and I had a very nice Valentine’s dinner at Crook’s Corner. The food was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor. The seasonal menu drew from New Orleans and Mardi Gras flavors and inspirations. I started with Turtle soup and followed it with gumbo...More

Twice I called the restaurant and inquired about patio seating as we were bringing a dog. The first answer was, yes, patio seating would be available, if there is favorable weather. I called again today and asked if the patio was open as we would...More

Run, don’t walk, RUN! to ANY place other than this one in the Chapel Hill area. Soggy, sad, lukewarm grit cakes. Weepy, depressed, lukewarm hush puppies. Overdone and underdone burgers (both ordered medium). Salad... Oops! Forgot the dressing (really), but remembered yesterday’s baleful “croutons”... full...More

Description
Crook's Corner is on the corner of West Franklin Street and Merritt Mill roads, where Chapel Hill meets Carrboro. It's very casual and unpretentious, yet the food and the drinks are outstanding. Crook's Corner is where you'll find the original Shrimp and Grits (introduced in 1983) and also the best Fried Oysters and Banana Pudding renditions anywhere. Chef Bill Smith's dishes are often modern takes on heirloom dishes, or originals, for example: Atlantic Beach Pie or Jerusalem Artichoke Relish on grilled steaks. Some are wholly original, like Green Tabasco Chicken and Honeysuckle Sorbet. Some are super seasonal like Soft Shell Crabs (the best of the best). And some are quirky like Orange Red Hot Sorbet. Some are gutsy and only on for a few days (like Turtle Soup or Sweetbreads). Things on the menu since the 80s and ordered a plenty are Frozen Mint Juleps, Shrimp & Grits, Mt. Airy Chocolate Souffle Cake. Join us for dinner or Sunday Brunch inside or on the patio.
