My husband has talked about Hoppin' John for years and I am so pleased it lived up to the hype and I walked away with a signed cookbook containing the recipe! We loved the shrimp and cheese grits, tomato plate appetizer (homegrown), and collard greens. The dessert and drinks are to die for and the service was excellent! Sit outside... More

I admit to going into this place with a hefty recommendation as best shrimp and grits in the area. Wow, definitely not. There is parking at this place, behind the restaurant, but not a lot of it - but better than most places in Chapel Hill. We went in for brunch recently and got some drinks - mimosas were just... The staff was extremely friendly and competent which made our time there a pleasure. The food was...not bad, exactly. Mostly odd. Maybe I'm just not used to southern food? The hush puppies were dry and everything else passable.

WRAL did a piece on this restaurant and I was excited to try it. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Location: Awful. No Parking. This is Chapel Hill after all. Atmosphere: Awful. Did not know that you had to request the PATIO to sit outside. The inside seating was sparse, cramped, ugly and dirty Service: Good even though courses came too close together Food:... More

We stopped in Chapel Hill area to visit My step son and his girlfriend on way home from Charlotte . It was kind of a celebratory dinner for him completing his masters while working on his doctorate. Went went on a weekday but reservations are recommended . They have both been there before and it's one of their faves. We... More

Enjoyed our yummy southern dinner on the bamboo-enclosed patio. The signature dish-shrimp & grits was fabulous. The Vichyssoise with the NC-shaped cracker was zippy and the tuna was perfectly cooked to order. Highly recommend.

We stopped here on the way back to our hotel one evening for snacks and drinks. We were not disappointed. We came in 15 minutes before the kitchen closed and were still able to get some good appies that were hot and chilled. I had the Mt. Airy Chocolate Souffle and it was light and sweet but not over-powering. My... More

We were with a friend and got there as they opened for dinner. Although we had reservations, we got into the que. Seating went very quickly and we were seated in the courtyard by the bamboo. Sun was setting and for June, the weather was perfect and without humidity. Our server brought drinks to us quickly and the ladies had... More

The food here was pretty good. It had great flavor and was a bit eclectic as we expected. We sat outside on a rainy Sunday morning which was also a good time. The part that they missed was providing an appropriate level of service on the patio. The service inside seemed to be more attentive but we were without water... More

Since the late Bill Neal acquired it around 1980, Crooks Corner has been ground zero for modern explorations of southern cuisine in an upscale setting. Bill Smith has carefully nurtured Crooks for many years now with no decline in its high quality of food, service, or excellent bar. Can't go wrong for a want to impress dining experience.
