We went here based upon the recommendations of national writers and must say we were disappointed. The building itself is old and not in an antique rustic sort of way. The service was spotty and not very polite - especially from the manager of the establishment in the way she was ordering the staff around. The BBQ and sides, while... More

The waitress was down to earth and friendly. The food was amazing. They do a great vinegar based BBQ. The hush puppies were delicious, and their steak burger was very good. You can even get some traditional sweet tea. The kind you need to chase with a coke a cola to get the sugar taste out of your mouth. I... More

Food wasn't bad. Lots of pork options and the sauce is true to the region, but the service is pretty lousy and surprising not too friendly for a small rural BBQ joint.

Second trip to Chapel Hill and second time to Allen and Son BBQ. It looks like a dive on the inside and out. Wobbly tables, a plethora of wooden and metal chairs, diner style menus. Go right in! You get plates or trays. Go for the plate, (trays are small) unless you are super hungry, then go for the extra... More

The hush puppies were to die for! The barbecue was delicious too, but arrive well before closing they were out of all their dessert options :(

Real wood smoked, people fly in from NYC Country style, not fancy just good eats. Always clean, friendly help.

Finally made it to Allen & Son as part of personal Eastern NC barbecue tour and was pleasantly surprised. Although it doesn't quite match the best Eastern NC barbecue joints (think Skylight Inn, B 's, Wilber's), Allen & Son offers a very good, smoky barbecue that's a bit spicier than most. Cole slaw also very good, and brunswick stew some... More

Based on one visit, I don't get it. How does this place earn positive write-ups? When you pick up a laminated menu so slimed with grease that it slips from your hand, that's either a sign of great things to come or a lack of attention to cleaning. Well, for me, the great things never came. Barbecue was bitter. Slaw... More

I find the BBQ spicy from Allen and son's. I prefer collard greens or a mixed green salad as a side. Almost All of their sides are fried. I like the pig on weaver diary better.
