I was pleasantly surprised when my meal came. The lemon potatoes were divine. Enjoyed the lamb, it was done perfectly.

The fact that I chose Kipos for my birthday dinner for a second year in a row is saying a lot! Beyond the excellent Greek food, I really enjoy the atmosphere here. We had a great friendly waiter who gave us some excellent suggestions. The lamb was some of the best I have had in a long time (and I... More

Thoroughly enjoyed our Greek meal with an excellent (waiter recommended) white wine. The sampler appetizer was delicious and and our various main dishes were perfectly prepared and presented. Favorite main course was trout. We also shared some moussaka--a perfect way to satisfy but not over indulge--this rich specialty. The atmosphere was aromatic and busy (but well-managed) and not too loud.... More

Kipos Greek is not your classics Greek restaurant. I my option it is new fusion Greek. It is Greek with a twist. I had the roasted chicken special and added the vegan roasted root vegetables. The chicken was served with roasted potatoes. They were good but I wanted a more varied selection, which the vegan Vegetables add. Had a mojo... More

Hi Geomanjim, All our recipes are taken from our Chef's mothers kitchen so we aim to create a classic taverna menu. Next time you're in, I suggest getting a variety of mezes so you can experience many dishes in a true Greek fashion! The more, the merrier! Hope to see you soon! Best, Katherine More

I was with 15 friends this afternoon for lunch. The service was very good for that many people. I had the lamb burger with kipos fries and took home baklava. Others had moussaka, bean soup, etc. all really good. I couldn't fit the baklava in at lunch because the lamb burger was filling. But when I came home -- yummmm!... More

Of all of the truly wonderful places to dine in Chapel Hill, Kipos is our favorite! Our Valentine's dinner was incredibly festive, romantic, & fun and the food & drinks were outstanding! Gorgeous flowers, balloons, & heart decorations were thoughtfully placed all around the restaurant & servers wore roses in their shirt pockets. Live bouzouki music added to the ambiance.... More

Kipos is a nicely decorated, aroma filled little gem. The food and service were excellent. 2 adults and 2 teens went and we ate like little piglets.

We fortuitously came to Kipos during Triangle Restaurant Week. We had to wait for twenty minutes at the bar, But I had a delightful conversation with the Greek Carolinian bartender as I had retsina. We remember months ago how much we enjoyed the Meze or dips. Tzatziki, tirokafteri, Tamarosalata, and melitzanosalata were our choices and once again wonderful. We shared... More

We dropped in unannounced to get dinner for two adults and two kids. The place was, and is usually, busy, but the hostess mentioned a 15 minute wait, and we were seated in 10. Our two little kids were welcomed by all. The manager gave them samples of baklava while we waited. Service was great and the food was greater.... More

Description
Kipos is a place familiar like home, comforting, flavorful, honest and welcoming to all. It's a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) keep coming to your table, and the conversation and laughter get better with time. This is something that we all share.

Kipos is a reflection of my childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. It's a remembrance of my mother's masterful way with phyllo. It's a celebration of cheese, breads, mousaka and lamb youvetsi. It's a story about pigeon in clay pots, octopus grilled over a fire and perfect dolmas. It's about my love for her youvarelakia, her rabbit stefado and the aroma of lamb roasting over an open fire. It's about her chicken and potatoes, especially when I was the one who had to catch the bird. Kipos is a tale of baked eggplant, the perfect village salad, kakavia and my favorite, zucchini blossoms and fresh cheese. And of course we can't forget the baklava, honey walnut cakes and spoon sweets.

But above all, Kipos is a story about the love and joy that my parents shared, working the fields heroically, enduring, so that one day my brothers, my sister and I could realize the American dream. My brothers, sister and I became one with the garden, with the olives, with the grapes. We became one with the fields and the mountains that were covered with wild oregano. We gathered animals, both wild and tamed. Nature nourished us with her abundance, with her goodness. This is what we want to share with you at Kipos: cooking from the memory of my heart. Kalos Oresate (welcome) to our home.

Love,

Giorgios Bakatsias
