Don't get me wrong, this is a nice restaurant, but it is overrated. The environment is very loud, service seems understaffed, and food is good-not-great. The prices are good, reservations easily obtained, and the staff is very friendly. If you are looking for Indian, give it a shot - but it isn't the best in town....

We recently tried Cholanad for the first time. We enjoyed the food that was just a little bit different from the food you find on a regular Indian menu. You will find a few familiar items, but there are plenty of new things to choose as well. The service was good - the food was served very quickly. The price... More

This is a medium priced restaurant and bar. The food is outstanding. The wait staff is very professional. Located very near the UNC campus, it has a nice family atmosphere. There is a small parking lot for customers next to the building. During busy times this lot can get filled, however it is not difficult to find a spot on... More

Recently we enjoyed an excellent evening at Cholanad. Indian food with a clear south India influence, very delicate and fruity. The food was all very tasty and interesting. Our waitress Patricia was very helpful as we explored the different menu. We often find Indian restaurants serve very similar food and you often feel "full" when you leave. This evening we... More

we made the mistake of ordering take-out food after having had a disappointing dining experience (and a complimentary meal in between). the vegetarian meals weren't and the ones that were supposed to have meat in them had so little that the chicken is still probably alive. nouveau Indian, perhaps, but i would heartily suggest you skip dinner instead.

Cholnand is one of the best Indian Restaurants in Chapel Hill (the other one is Raagan). It has a nice collection of Indian dishes that are difficult in find in most of Indian restaurants, such as a very nice variety of Dosa, but also classical Indian dishes with a Western nuevo twist. The dishes are not greasy and very flavorful.... More

My daughter was craving Indian food, having been in a dorm for 3 months, and this was a great find. Both food and service was excellent, and we ordered a normal dosa as well as some samosas and a chicken curry. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Durham.

I eat a lot of Indian food, this is one of the best meals I've enjoyed in some time. Very good food. I enjoyed Dal Fritters, then followed up with their chicken curry (Chettinad Chicken). Plus some papadums. My choices were rather traditional but check out their menu - some really interesting looking meals. Lots of gluten free selections (all... More

Situated on Franklin Street, this is gem of a restaurant. The quality of food was amazing, with excellent service. All the dishes that we ordered, made us eat more than our appetite! We will definitely visit it again.
