We stayed at the Umstead and had 2 meals at Herons- lunch on the patio and dinner in the bar area. Both meals were outstanding start to finish. The chef accommodated my requests for vegan meals and both were delicious.

I would agree with those who say that this is not a good restaurant for kids. It might be OK in a private room, but unless your children are unusual the food at Herons would be wasted on them. In all seriousness, you might check to see if they would let you bring a platter of nuggets from the Chick-Fil-A across the street. My kids would have preferred that at ages 4 and 6. My 7 year-old still would.
