My family and I came one evening for a meal and drinks, although the food was fine the service we received was poor. Our meals came out at different times causing food to go cold, we also had to wait a considerable amount of time for cutlery and condiments even after receiving our food. A waiter did come back to check on us, my farther in law did voice we were disappointed the server just explained ‘sorry it’s just the kitchen’ and gave no further explanation or apology. Sincerely disappointed as enjoyed the drinks, sadly won’t be returning in a hurry.

It’s worth knowing that this is the only restaurant on Herm that accepts card payments. After a day on Shell Beach, we headed there for a late lunch to avoid the afternoon queues at the Shell beach kiosk and for a little shelter from the sun. The Mermaid staff are welcoming, relaxed and lightninging fast and efficient. They have a huge lively beer garden. We sat inside, I ordered seafood and fries dishes and was blown away by how fast the food was delivered, how affordable it was, how generous the portions were and as well as how delicious and fresh all the ingredients tasted. It’s an excellent place to eat. There is a huge sign outside that says the kitchen opening hours, however, this isn’t always right, so it’s worth checking the kitchen hours of operation that day before heading to the beach, to avoid hunger and disappointment.

So straight up on a hot day with blue skies and calm seas the Mermaid gets pretty packed at peak time. There are only a few places to eat on Herm so occasionally be prepared to wait. That said we found a table pretty quickly towards the end of lunchtime. We ordered the burger, ribs and a fish salad. All were good with the ribs much bigger than the menu suggested and the McD burger a double patty. You have to order food separately to drinks so you may have to queue at busy times. In the bar take a few moments to look up at the various beer memorabilia all around you.

We were a party of 4 adults, the eating area was not too busy yesterday (Monday 1st August). Two of us ordered food at the same time for the same table. A portion of large chips was ordered for the whole table . Half our order came with the chips. By the time the other half of the order came 15 mins later the chips were cold. I pointed this out to the waitress and asked for some more chips. After 5 minutes another waitress approached us who was sullen, rude, did not smile, made no apology and I quote her words " Have you got a problem ? Its not our fault you ordered at different times (we didn't), I am not giving you any more chips unless you pay for them. She had no customer service skills and clearly needs to learn some. It was our friends birthday and sadly she ruined the end of the day for us. I made my complaint at the bar before we left. There were also a year out of date condiments on the table. This waitress let the rest of the team down at The Mermaid and I would rather take my own lunch to herm than give the Mermaid Tavern my business again.

Visited the Mermaid recently with family, the food was very expensive and the quality was poor, I don’t mind paying good money for decent and quality food but our food was disappointing and below average. Paid £15 for a prawn & smoked salmon sandwich (as photo), this was supposed to be served with salad but they had none available (at midday) so they added some greasy fries to the plate instead, the bread was basic and stale, there was about a tablespoon of prawns in the entire sandwich and a tiny slice of smoked salmon - absolute rip-off. They also have a serious wasp problem in their outdoor seating area (possibly a nest) so this also spoilt our experience, I appreciate wasps can be an issue during the summer everywhere, but there are actions that can be taken to help alleviate the problem. Loved Herm but certainly won’t be returning to the Mermaid.

Sadly, standards have dropped, having taken family over for the day we were presented with three very stale ciabatta lunches, even though it was only mid-day. The fish and chips were good, however, I noticed that the fish portion had halved from what was served last year. Go large? Not at £22.00... Did I complain, no, on a special day out it is less stressful to just suck it up, should it happen again my reaction will be different. It is sad that the beer garden has lost much of its charm, oppressively hot under enormous canopies that blot out the summer day, fake grass walls and no real greenery to be seen. Herm is the jewel of the Baliwick, a special place being spoiled by commercialization. Someone needs to step back and look at what is happening...

Just visited the Mermaids Tavern for lunch. We waited patiently 40 minutes for the food to arrive (a bowl of soup and baguette for my wife, a cheese sandwich for me). After watching people who arrived after us have their fish & chips etc delivered I went to investigate and was conveniently told ours would be out next. The soup arrived, luke warm and with no baguette and my sandwich arrived with no crisps on the same plate as the soup. I went back to complain again and was told I could have the baguette and crisps but there would be an extra charge Apparently they thought I wanted a soup and sandwich combo and that's what they charged me for (it's £2.50 cheaper) despite me saying when ordering "I'd like the leek soup & baguette for my wife and I'll have a cheese and chutney sandwich on granary". Having waited so long for what was obviously a forgotten order, have it come out wrong and cold and then be told they wanted more money made my blood boil so asked to see the manager. Frankly sir I found your manner condescending and insincere. Explaining to me again what had gone wrong and telling me if I wanted a free baguette and packet of crisps it wasn't a problem; making a sorry excuse for the wait by telling me some dishes take longer than others to prepare - I'm not a chef but know serving a bowl of soup and a sandwich is quicker than preparing fish & chips or mussels. The fact your staff got the order wrong is the pubs fault, the fact the order was forgotten was the pubs fault. I was not offered a receipt so didn’t have the opportunity to check the order and ensure it was correct All you needed to do was apologise SINCERELY and give me a packet of crisps. I'm not used to being spoken to in a condescending manner and you won't be getting the opportunity to do it again. Even the people on the table behind us said to me you were clearly insincere in your apology and explanation.

Spent a day on Herm and had lunch at The Mermaid. A friendly greeting when we arrived, and a good, simple pub menu. I was pleasantly surprised to see haggis on the menu, and it was battered and deep fried, just like what you might expect in a chip shop in the west of Scotland. It was lovely, and served with chips and mushy peas. A good range of very wholesome desserts too. Even though we had only been on the island a couple of hours, we felt like regulars given how friendly and welcoming everyone was. Good range of drinks too. Impressed that there was good range of food and drink given that it was off season and there weren't many crossings from Guernsey at the time.

it is not the mermaid's fault that other places were shut due to covid. But to wait an hour for food from 2pm to 3pm was too long but we were informed of this at the time of ordering. My daughters salad looked great but my mushroom and haloumi burger was disappointing

We ordered wraps, southern fried chicken for my husband and falafel, hummus and roasted red peppers for me. At £15.99 and £14.99 respectively, these were not inexpensive! They both were accompanied by fries and salad. When I started to eat mine, it soon fell apart. There was very little hummus to hold the filling together. Furthermore, the peppers were neither red nor roasted. They were green and yellow and virtually raw. Roasted peppers are soft and sweet and would have helped keep the filling together as well as adding some much needed flavour to this tasteless dish! I tried to work my way through it as we were catching the 2.35 ferry back to St. Peter Port, I was hungry and there was nowhere else to eat. It wasn’t long before I really couldn’t stomach any more of it. I went up to the bar and told the young girl who’d taken my order that my food had been unpalatable, giving the reasons why. She said she would inform the chef of my concerns. A few minutes later, she came to our table. She said she had been going to offer a refund until she saw that I “had eaten most of it”. This was just not true! When I challenged her she told me to calm down. At this point, I no longer wished to continue the conversation. A little while later another just as young girl came to the table. She asked me what I wanted, did I want a refund? Neither she nor the other girl had any customer service skills. The establishment clearly does not train its staff in how to deal with complaints nor does it seem to care what its customers think.

Excellent choice of vegan and gluten free options, was served with this fine piece of cuisine during our visit. The presentation was so authentic I almost thought I was sat by the canals of Italy myself. As you can imagine, it tasted as incredible as it looked, definitely worth the bargain £12 spend… will be rushing back here to grab another of of these before they get rushed off the menu! Thank you Mermaid Tavern for a lovely visit

We were the first group in the queue to order when they opened. We were told they had a limited amount of salad leaves so i was unable to order the prawn salad so instead i chose the prawn and smoked salmon sandwich. The sandwich was £15 for a tiny slice of salmon, a handful of prawns and stale plain bread. We also ordered the truffle and parmesan fries. There was little to no truffle flavouring and the parmesan was just thickly grated on top.

Go to Herm, it gives you just another perspectives on life! So calm and lovely. The mermaid inn, what a wonderful find after taking a walk around the island. Now if you have mobility issues unless you can order/ arrange for the golf buggy to get you up the hill it could be a difficult place to visit! With that said if you wanted a nice welcome then the mermaid is the place to visit- there is I am sure lots of activities in the summer months but even this half term there were games and movies for the children. Food was lovely and very welcoming- anyone who talks to the children and welcomes them is clearly focusing on the customers! Thank you it was lovely

Average food, nothing special. Staff unfortunately didn't know what they where doing and kept bringing wrong food and got the food order wrong. Very expensive for what the quality is but i love the location and convenience so i am 50/50.

What a great spot for the lucky owners. Open fire in the bar, good selection of drinks. Food was a let down. A massive over cooked Yorkshire pudding, when cut it disintegrated because it was way over cooked. The Sunday roast looked like it had been cooked the day before and sliced on a machine. Sad as this place has the monopoly . Next time I will take a picnic.
