We enjoyed very much our dinner at the Tea House at Emerson. Be prepared to climb several flights of stairs to get there but it is well worth it! The view is gorgeous, especially at sunset, the dining experience and food authentic and the service...was very good. I loved hearing prayer call while we were dining as well as the band that plays in the background. I would definitely do it again.More

What an experience. You are invited to the very top of the hotel, shoes are removed and you are seated around small tables surrounded by cushions. The view and the sunset was spectacular. The menu was excellent, all explained really well by the helpful and...friendly staff. The food was amazing! And the live music was perfect for the setting. Highly recommendedMore

Go there for the views and authenticity, but maybe not for a food. We got a small seafood platter for 40 USD, while food is exotic and interesting, it's not a lot to leave well eaten.

We had been looking forward to this place, and were not disappointed. The setting is wonderful: high atop the Emerson Hurumzi hotel, with a 360 degree view of Stone Town at sunset. They give an option to be seated Swahili style (on the floor, on...cushions) or at tables (we chose the latter). The servers gave helpful introductions to the experience and what we would be eating, prior to the start of a live performance by taarab musicians and singers....a real treat. And yes, the food was very good, probably the nicest meal we had while in Zanzibar. A few tips to keep in mind: it can be helpful to book in advance through the website, as it is a popular place. Keep an eye on the weather....although the seating area is covered, it is open on the sides, and we had a cool breeze that evening (my wife was a little chilly). And since it is an old building, there is no elevator (lift), so you do need to walk up several flights of stairs to reach the roof....not a problem for us, but good to know about. All in all, it was a great experience.More

For dinner on our last night in Stonetown, we went to the rooftop restaurant of our hotel. We sat on carpets on the ground and ate off low tables. Dinner was three courses of Zanzibar cuisine with Persian and Omani influences. Three courses may not...sound like a lot, but one of them was this impressive array of small plates. Dinner was accompanied by traditional Taarab performances from the Dhow Countries Music Academy. I took a pretty subpar photo of the singer, but I wanted to remember her -- so good. A really wonderful experience and so inexpensive compared to American prices!More

We revisited this place in Feb 2022 after 20 years - and it is still one of the best restaurants in town. A bit pricy yes - but yummy food, attentive service, view and ambience makes it place not to miss when you’re in town....Thank you for a wonderfull evening.More

The place is quite nice with a beautiful view but that was the end of the dream. We arrived at 6pm, then around 6.30 a huge rain started pouring and since it is an open space we were very quickly soaked. After 15 mn they...put some type of protection against the rain , not super efficient, my dress was completely wet so was my hair. I was getting cold, and dinner was served at 7.40 so when it’s been more than an hour that you have been under the rain and cold, it’s very frustrating to wait that long, especially that people that came after us were served before. The food was ok, nothing special but the portions were just too small. It is outrageous to pay 40$ for such an average and small portion dinner. Even the kids were hungry when we left. Too touristic and quality has clearly sufferedMore

Definitely worth to book dinner here. Beautiful views and listening to the prayer calls was magical. It’s also nice to get a breeze of wind after a hot day in Stone Town. The food is very good, you’ll definitely not leave hungry. The staff are...all very nice, would go again!More

We had an amazing lunch at the rooftop tea restaurant at the Emerson on Hurumzi (not to be confused with Emerson Spice, which is the other affiliated hotel and also has a rooftop restaurant with the same name). The lunch meal choices were fixed with...decent pricing and there were several options to choose from. We had the fish meal and loved everything we got on our platter! Everything was so tasty! Staff was super friendly and attentive. Wine was delicious. And the 360 degrees panoramic view of daytime Stonetown is truly unique. Highly recommend this restaurant for lunch. And surely it will also be magnificent for dinner.More

The restaurant setting and the view are truly amazing. If you book the Arabic type sitting on the floor it feels even better with all the authentic cushions around you and a Persian-style carpet below you. Food is OK, not great but good enough but...in any case, food should not be your main reason to visit this place as the whole experience is quite unique. Service and music are also very good - you will have a really good time here.More

To get to an amazing view you have to suffer some pain, 5 flights of stairs test your endurance. We struggled to find the place in the maze of narrow streets with even some of the locals confused over directions. Once there we were greeted...with a jasmine garland and a guide to take us to the top. The 360 degree views over Stone town were breathtaking. This restaurant offers a fixed menu of local Arabic style dishes served on traditional brass platter. The food offered an amazing fusion of spices and flavours to excite the taste buds. Starters and main courses where like tapas and engaged us with the overall traditional experience. The desert with ginger tea was a great finish to guarantee that we knew we on the spice island! The staff were very attentive and the Swahili band and singer added so much to the experience. We were so taken into the traditional world that we doubted that they had WiFi, but they do! We dropped rating simply on the difficulty to find and the challenge of the stairs.More

Dining at the Tea House is a must while in Stone Town. The food is excellent, the view is superb, and the service is top notch. From the hand washing to the music, everything is well done. Although sitting on the floor may be difficult...for some, I would strongly recommend this option. Also, make sure you make reservations as the restaurant is small and sells out routinely. Also, arrive before dinner to enjoy drinks and the sunset.More

We decided to end our stay in Stone town with a visit which was based on the good reviews we read. However, our experience was not so good. The ambiance in the restaurant was non existent. When another customer asked for music to be played,...the waiter said they can’t because it wasn’t busy. We had the set menu which was $40 per person. The food was not worth the $40 we paid per person, and expected a lot better quality. The goat curry was the best item they had on the menu. Definitely room for improvement here.More
