We were traveling from Indiana to Block Island, RI. Our hotel was right next door to Trattoria Calabria. Boy did we luck out when we decided to eat here. We split the Trattoria salad (huge and delicious) and the lasagna. Yum!! Our server was excellent...and the owner stopped by our table to check in on us. We asked if he was the owner and he said, "No I'm the dishwasher!" Like all good owner/operators I'm sure he is willing to do whatever success demands. Clearly this is a first class restaurant. So glad we visited. Thanks for a delicious meal!!More

Visited this place a week ago and had a delicious meal prepared by Danny, and brought out one course at a time, served family style. You BYOB here, which I like, cuz the sober you will only bring 1 ot 2, lol. No chance of...getting carried away! The food was delicious, and the time between courses gives plenty of time to relax and chat with friends, and also with Danny. Get there @ 6 with an empty tummy, and have about a half hour for your cocktails. With all the food, the conversation and the laughs, plan around 2 hours. And bring home the leftovers! We already have a reservation (required) made for September :) When it's that good, and fun... you go back!!More

Four of us went last Saturday at 6 we brought our own wine .We were greeted by Danny and seated .The first course was a wonderful chicken soup ,then peppers and bread and big antipasto with homemade dressing.and the courses kept coming each more delicious...than the one before macaroni with meatballs ,sausage and greens , the best Eggplant Parmesan I’ve ever had. Ice cream for dessert. Could not eat anything else and brought food home . Danny is always a wonderful host , and we can’t wait to go back again.More

This is a prix-fix meal. The owner/chef prepares a new meal for each night he is open. It will be an excellent Italian selection. There will be several wonderful generous courses. This is a tasting exploration. The seating is limited with family style service. Call...ahead for reservations From the moment you walk in you will be entertained by the owner/chef. There is no liquor license but guests are welcome to bring their own beverages.More

Dinner last night at Trattoria Calabria on Culver Avenue was nothing short of AMAZING. Danny is a great chef and wonderful host. Food by courses: vegetable soup, garlic bread, broccoli salad, antipasto, mussels, sausage & rapini, eggplant parmigiana, bow tie pasta with meatballs and an...ice cream sandwich to complete the meal. Everything was cooked to perfection. Definitely will return. Details to share: Restaurant is only open Friday and Saturday evening. Reservations are required. You will be asked to arrive at 6pm, where you are cheerfully greeted by Danny. BYOB, which he will gladly open. Very casual atmosphere, no waiters in tuxedos, Danny does it all. The concept is it's like eating dinner at a friend's, and this said, there is no menu, so you eat what is cooked. There are several courses, and food is served family style, so if there is something you don't like, there's plenty of other (Italian) food. No coffee or dessert is served, but we couldn't fit it anyway! We were a party of three and have enough leftovers for another meal. We enjoyed being 'surprised' by what would be served next. One very reasonable flat rate per person, which we paid in cash. I did not see anyone paying by credit card, and this Sid, I'm not sure if credit cards are accepted. I understand this concept might not work for everyone, but if you're looking for an eating adventure, put this on your list. Thank you, Danny!More

Absolutely amazing food! I love that there are no walk ins. I love that it is special and that you need to plan ahead to enjoy this very special thing. Today, food is often cheap and quick. Not here. Here you take your time. You...sit and are treated like family. I guarantee the food took all day to prepare, and just can't be beat. Danny is one heck of a cook that entertains as well. Bring some tasty beverages with you. Slow down. Enjoy.More

We visited Trattoria Calabria the evening of July 13, 2019 as part of our annual trek to Utica NY for the Utica Boilermaker 15K and 5K races. We visited with our daughter and her wife since both were also running in the races. This was...our fourth visit and is now part of our standard menu of Boilermaker weekend activities/visits/fun. As always Danny (owner, raconteur, cook, server) did an outstanding job throughout the evening. Trattoria Calabria is located in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood in West Utica…maybe 0.5 miles from the start of the famed Utica Boilermaker 15K race start line…right on the course. Danny only takes reservations because his concept is you are coming to his house (which is right next door to the restaurant) for dinner and he’s prepared a special evening for his friends and those he has yet to meet for the first time. Two pieces of advice for those that have never visited Trattoria Calabria. Don’t eat anything after 11:00am…and bring some Tupperware or similar type containers to take home your leftovers. If you would like anything to drink besides water or the fruit/iced tea concoction that Danny served, bring your own booze or otherwise. Danny welcomes the BYOB practice On to our evening. We started a bit late for our 6:00pm dinner (only seating of the night) because some guests didn’t show. Shame on them for not even calling. But once dinner began…well wipe the smiles from our faces. Our (see pictures below) first course was a delicious soup. Served piping hot…as were each course. It was a greens based mixture that was just terrific to get started. Second course was a combination of fresh garlic bread, with some marinated peppers that were a perfect spread for the garlic bread. Next up was the surprise of the evening for me, a delicious garden salad with hints of basil and mint that were a kind of nice surprise when you got that first bite. Next up were some steamed mussels with a sauce that demanded to be sopped up with any remaining garlic bread. Then a bit of an intermezzo, followed by Danny’s take on greens and meatballs. Which led directly into the signature eggplant. Mrs. SRCFan’s eyes rolled into her head at each bite. Light doesn’t describe this adequately for a dish that is all too often just a heavy blob of sauce, cheese and spices. If you ask nicely, Danny might share his secret on how he prepares eggplant. Write it down. Commit to memory. Then try and replicate back home. Final course was a hearty penne pasta served with melt in your mouth tender pork. We rolled out of the place, and thought to ourselves, “How am I gonna run that race tomorrow?” Nevertheless we finished the race…and waved to Danny who was on his front porch to cheer all 15,000 of us on. Of course we’ll return next year.More

I have heard that you'll have to pay for all of the reservations-- that didn't happen to us though. I'd find someone else to fill in!! But call Danny to be sure.

Its a real experience-- reminded me of my grandma's home cooking and it's a casual atmosphere. Not somewhere to go week after week, but a great once in a while place. Danny is a great cook and it's a fun time!
