Syracuse, New York is probably best known for its university but as I learned when I visited here in support of my Great Beer Now beer blog, Syracuse is also a good place to visit for beer and food. You just need advice on the...best places to visit and one that I recommend highly is The Evergreen.
I visited The Evergreen for lunch with the wife and we seated ourselves at the bar, ready to order food and beverages. Beer is in wide abundance at The Evergreen and this was evident both from the taps behind the bar to the large display of beers on tap, located on the back wall. The display on the wall shows the beer name, state where it is brewed, brewery that makes it, alcohol level, and serving size. The only thing lacking on this display is that it doesn’t indicate the style. Unless the style is already part of the beer’s name, you won’t know and will have to ask.
I wanted to try some local brew so I ordered flight samplers. I love the wide variety of beer options served here and like I said, the beer selection is better than average and is easily one of the establishment’s strong points. But there is more here than just beer. The full-service bar can mix up just about anything you like from the more commonplace cocktails to the more exotic. Just ask, and you shall receive.
With the food, we ordered a variety of options and found the items fabulous. I loved my burger and side of bean soup and the appetizer consisting of loaded fries was amazing as well. The only problem for me is that, with so much food and beer, I filled up too quickly and couldn’t finish everything. I hate to leave food on the table, but since I was traveling, I couldn’t take anything with me. I have a hearty appetite so anytime I can eat this much and end up having to stop because I’m too full, it really says something about the quality of the food. It takes a lot to get me this full, but everything was so amazing, I couldn’t stop until my stomach demanded I do so.
The interior of The Evergreen tends toward the conservative side, with wooden tables and chairs and nothing that really grabs your attention on the walls or anyplace else. Suffice it to say that the food and beer are the true stars of the show at The Evergreen and considering the high quality of everything I tried, and the amazing service, this establishment earns an easy five star rating.More
