I use to go to Asahi more frequently, especially for Monday half-price sushi, but they have recently increased some of their entree prices. An avid customer for their chicken teriyaki, I typically ordered this dish for lunch because it was $8.95. Now the dish itself costs about $11.50. As a college student on a budget, I would love getting the full meal for $10 after tax but now that I have to pay $12-13 for the full meal before tip makes me less inclined to eat out here. Furthermore, as you may read on other reviews, Monday half-price sushi is just half an order of the normal amount so you're technically paying the same price if you eat the same amount. It's not really a deal, unless you eat less.

When I entered on a Tuesday night, I wasn't confident that they were open because there was only one patron. While the staff wasn't especially friendly or outgoing, the service was efficient and the food was good. I ordered two different rolls, a miso soup and edamame. I was happy to return home, grab a beer and eat in the backyard (btw, I ate some of the edamame the next night as well).

Half priced Mondays? They give you half a sushi roll so it's actually the same exact price. The quality is not as good as somewhere like koto but I like to eat local but not if the experience is horrible. Just bad service, they never come around to ask if you want anything. I bought a Groupon once I ate my food with my boyfriend when I presented the Groupon they told me they couldn't accept it because there weren't enough people in the restaurant. I have no idea what that means, so I asked for an explanation and they repeated there are not enough people in the restaurant. I'm assuming they didn't want to lose money but if that's the case they shouldn't have been offering the Groupon to begin with...

Went for a quick bite on my lunch break. I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki for 16.25 and the salmon was farm raised frozen fish. The Teriyaki sauce was under seasoned and full of oil. The portions for the price would have been ok if the food was fresh and seasoned well.

My wife and I were looking for something light this Sunday evening and decided sushi was the way to go. We tried a couple of places on the Syracuse University Hill, but they were both closed, and then remembered that our son recommended Asahi Sushi (Asahi Japanese Restaurant) on Westcott. I saw several recent reviews that panned Asahi. But, our experience was very pleasant and the food was tastefully presented and was quite good--and, I've eaten sushi at many fine restaurants in NYC. So, I don't know what the problem was for the other patrons who found the food or service less than palatable. Perhaps they sampled sushi from the carousel and did not like that. We ordered through the chef. The restaurant is rather spacious, although it could accommodate more people if arranged differently. We found it comfortable for us on a hot, summer evening. An obviously new, but very cute waitress, provided menus with an extensive array of selections at very reasonable prices. There is sushi, of course, but also hot plates from the kitchen. I noticed they had seafood udon noodle soup, something I will have to return for. The only ice tea was the Snapple brand and they did not have hot tea, something I found rather unusual for an Asian restaurant. Pepsi products were available, but we opted for an Asahi bottled beer (very good) and a Pinot Grigio (also very good). We started the meal with miso soup, which came to the table a little tepid, but, inasmuch as this was an 85 degree day, that was OK. Often miso soup is over-salted. Asahi avoided that mistake, serving us a delightful miso broth with seaweed and tofu. The Dragon Roll (eel with cucumber and avocado with eel sauce) was as good as any I've eaten anywhere. My wife ordered the Rock 'N Roll (crunchy tuna with avocado) and we both enjoyed that, too. There are many other dishes available at Asahi that I would like to sample and have no hesitation about returning for a repeat performance.

This is wonderful to hear, Warren! It sounds like the sushi and the wine were a hit. I'm already looking forward to your next visit. Until next time, Gary

The restaurant was empty when we walked in. The waitress didn't speak much English. The food was average, nothing too spectacular. They have a conveyor belt where sushi comes around the bar. It wasn't in use since there were no customers at 6:30 PM on a Friday night, but we did walk by it. The whole time we were there, only a couple of guys came in, grabbed some quick sushi and left. The hibachi entrees are cooked in the kitchen and not as good compared to other places we've been. Sodas come in a can. This would not be a place I would recommend for a sit down restaurant unless you're just stopping in for some quick sushi. We spent $160 here between 5 people and ended up getting pizzas afterwards from Papa Johns next door.

My boyfriend and I recently went there with a Groupon voucher I had bought. After standing in the entry for a few awkward moments while she scowled at us my boyfriend asked where we should sit - she waved her hand towards the seating where the conveyor belt was. My boyfriend excused himself to the bathroom, the server walked to opposite end of restaurant to watch tv with her back turned to me. As I was sitting there sushi was coming around the conveyor belt - I have no idea how long it had been on there. My boyfriend returned, walked right past server and sat with me. We looked at the voucher searching for clues as to what the $30 dinner for two was going to be...we talked about the sushi and how disturbing it was that it had been on the conveyor belt before we arrived. Before we knew it 7 min had passed since he sat down - the server was still watching TV. My boyfriend shouted over to her "Hey can we get some service here?" She came immediately and with attitude dripping from her mouth asked us quite rudely "What you want to drink?" My boyfriend asked if there was a menu - she waved her hand towards the far end of the restaurant and said "I have refrigerator." My boyfriend informed her that she was rude - no apology offered - in an even ruder tone she said "You say I am rude?" My boyfriend said yes... you are rude, you do not talk to customers like that, we come in here, have to ask where to sit, ask to get service and you refuse to give us one of the menus you have at the end of this counter - yes you are rude! She said "You think I rude you get your money back and go somewhere else." So that is what we did. It was the worst treatment and service we ever had in a restaurant. Groupon refunded us, we ended up going to a place we had been to before via a groupon deal in Fayetville called Kyokos - it is still our favorite place...that will not change anytime soon after the treatment we got at Asahi.

So I feel guilty writing this review, because they seemed very nice and they looked like they were trying very hard. But when I and the missus both have diarrhea the day after eating sushi, there's something wrong. Truth be told, that's just gratuitous, because they're closing anyway. They haven't announced it, they might not even know it yet, but the restaurant is doomed. A) it was barely half full on a Saturday night when the students are in town. B) it's terrible. I've had better sushi in rural China. I've had better sushi at a buffet. (Not in Syracuse, never eat the sushi at a buffet in Syracuse) This was just poor all around. Even the Spider roll, which I consider almost impossible to screw up was skimpy and poorly presented. My wife said the tempura was good, so there's that. But overall, this is a one star fail and keep in mind, when you say conveyor belt sushi, my expectations are immediately lowered. What else, the atmosphere is very DIY-FOB, lots of ugly light fixtures straight from China, cheap sofas and tables. Very overlit. Why do I feel bad. This is obviously a family restaurant. I even saw the owners daughter doing her homework in the corner. No doubt having it crash and burn is going to be a financial disaster for them. That would happen with or without my review. I'm writing this to save other people money. *IF YOU ARE THE OWNER* 1. Hire a real sushi chef, who will insist on good if not excellent quality sushi 2. Hire a decorator who will work with what you have. 3. Turn down the lights and turn up the music, clear a space in front for an actual bar. Check out some hipster sushi places in NYC for what it should look like. 4. Move the soda display case refrigerator out of sight... this is not a pizzeria. 5. Raise your prices to make this the kind of place people want to go on date nights. 6. Find some way to keep the sushi cold on the conveyor belt. Maybe put it on frozen plates. If you get shut down by the health department you're done.

The food is terrific! The sushi is fresh, colorful, and delicious. The conveyor presents a lovely food parade, with tempting morsels winding past. Half priced Monday is the best deal in town. On the down side, the service is not always well organized, and the wine selection is limited to some kind of white... (sometimes very good, sometimes not so good). The owners are lovely, the food is good and the dining experience pleasant and reasonably priced. My "go to" place at SU.

Asahi is "conveyor-belt" sushi, a fast food Japanese place in Syracuse's University Hill neighborhood that offers sushi and other appetizer-style dishes (bits of tempura or salad, or sometimes Japanese-style mac&cheese!) on a rotating conveyor belt around a long sushi bar (you pay by the plate consumed), and a scattering of tables and booths for more substantial meals. While the selection is "first come, first served" and there's no brown rice options, what there is is varied and tasty. There are soft drinks as well as beer and wine. I often go on Mondays when their sushi is half-off all day, as do many college kids and staff. I go for lunch, eat my fill of sushi and sashimi for $10 - $20 (you have to work at it and eat all sashimi, or be starving, to hit $20!), then have a late light dinner.

Sounds like you're a big fan of our Monday deal! A few years have passed since you wrote this, but it still made my day hearing that you come here any time of day for a filling meal. Hope to see you again soon! Best regards, Gary
