My fave Mexican on Queens Boulevard went the unfortunate way of other post-depression struggling restaurants beholden to the greediest landlords in the country, so I tried pricey Arriba Arriba as a substitute.
The atmosphere is really for "loud mood dining" -- low lights and booming...music. I ordered to go out.
The first time, the guacamole ($10 for 8 oz.) was absolutely delicious, with just the right amount of cilantro (every 4-5 bites or so) to make it pretty outstanding. The second time, there was not a speck of cilantro, fewer onions, it wasn't cold... left me wondering what had happened. The chips are plain, but homemade -- and their plainness brings out the yummy taste in the guac -- if you get the right chef.
The first time, my chicken burrito with grilled chicken was fresh and hot and good. Overpriced at $15, yes, but good. For a dollar, I got two ounces of mole sauce on the side, and it was really good. Chocolatey and had cinnamon in it. Interesting! The second time, the chicken, which I had asked for grilled, was cubed, mixed in a soupy concoction that left it dripping on the plate, and was lukewarm. Yes, soupy and I'll warrant, a bit old. Eminently forgettable and even less forgiveable with all that drippy stuff.
On both occasions, the burrito was supersized -- two people of 140 lbs. and under could definitely have had a meal from it. I guess football players and the like are the target customers. A lot for your money, true.
However, especially because of the high prices, more attention to detail is warranted.
I really miss that good guac. It was delish. But now I'm afraid to order it again.More
