Service was above average food was not. We have been to Char and been served excellent meals. But the past 3 times have been average at best. Which may explain why we were able to get reservations when the other places we tried were booked!...The quality of food we were served did not match the high end prices we were charged. Sides were cold, meat wasn’t cooked as requested & compensation offered was free mediocre food for dessert! Next time we will plan ahead so we don’t have to settle for Char.More

Our party of 4 went to Char to celebrate my birthday. I have severe food allergies so when I called to make the reservation I alerted the host to my limitations. I was told they would be able to accommodate my needs. I have eaten...safely at Char prior to Covid 19 with no issues. I informed the server of my allergies and asked her to take my allergy card to the chef to alert the kitchen staff. I ordered the 4 oz fillet cooked medium and steamed broccoli. The fillet was served on a large plate by itself, well done with a crispy outside. It was so small it could have fit in a shot glass from the bar. Also, the chef switched out my plain steamed veg for a SEASONED blend of veg without letting me know. If I had even tasted the veg, a life threatening reaction could have occurred. All told, 3 of 4 meals were sub-par. Happy birthday.More

Went there to celebrate a college graduation on Mother’s Day. Char is a classy restaurant located inside the Strathallan Hotel. The bar is a beautiful granite with lots of seating. Joe the bartender took care of us and was great. Sonja stopped in during our...mea and was very accommodating. We enjoyed our meal-you have to get steak while you are here. We all had salads-my son and I split the iceberg salad, as normally those salads can be huge servings. This one one fairly small, although delicious. I had the 20 Oz KC Strip and it was savory. My wife and 2 kids also had a smaller cut of steak. They were all happy with the preparation and cooking of the meal. We enjoyed the sides of lobster Mac and Cheese, Potato Purée, and especially, the Asparagus, which was smoky and tangy. We skipped the dessert, and with 7 drinks and tip, the bill came to $475. It was pricey, but we enjoyed he experience for this special occasion.More

Went to Char Steak & Lounge with my husband and our teenage daughter The environment was relaxing and a little in the dark side (wonderful for couples and dates) Our server Mr. Mark was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks We had the...Vai De Mar sparkling Chardonnay and was very good We had the Shrimp Cocktail and the Shrimp was enormous and the sauce was very tasty The oisters were very fresh and they tasted amazing for appetizers we also had the local chesses and i was very impressed with the presentation and the flavors. My husband had the 27 onz-bone-in Cowboy ribeye and he said that it was missing flavor. My husband usually or should i say ALWAYS orders steaks when we go out and he was very disappointed with this steak, the way it was cooked and it's seasoning. My daughter is vegetarian and their menu didn't have any vegetarian options but the mashed potatoes and a salad I had the 8 oz fillet mignon and it was perfectly cooked (medium) and had a great flavor For dessert we had the Chocolate Creme Brulee and that was amazing! Will recommend this restaurant for couples night out! But not if you are vegetarian!More

Char provides consistently good food and service though prices are high. We have seldom been disappointed in the food. Recently, the restaurant has taken more steps than most restaurants to reduce COVID-19 risk including adopting adequate spacing between tables, use of paper menus and use...of transparent shields between booths and between sections of the bar. Our main complaint is lack of diversity among servers. The restaurant is located in the City of Rochester which is just over 50% minority. Yet, there is little if any diversity among front line staff in the restaurant although people of color work in other parts of the double tree hotel that houses the restaurant. In fact, we cannot recall seeing a single black server in our many trips over the years to Char. We know Char can do better.More

An upscale restaurant too pricey for comparable restaurants. Everything is ala carte. Our waiter, David, was attentive and gracious. At one point one of the hosts was speaking to the other hostess dropping F*bombs like they were going out of style. Language that might be...appropriate back-of-house, but highly unexpected in what we thought was a fine-dining restaurant. Ordered the filet mignon and got what may have been the tenderloin tip, but the grain was running the wrong way for any “steak.” When we asked the server, he responded that, “ they don’t break down the whole tenderloin, the steaks come packaged.” The whole set-up just seemed like a restaurant trying to be high end, with sub par ingredients, hoping guests won’t notice. Another example was their signature “Manhattan” was made with mostly Iron Smoke whiskey and float of Scotch (Dewars). They did take 20% off the bill because of the steak, but for the pricing level, we would have much preferred a high quality meal we didn’t have to question. The Lemon Napoleon and Peach Melba desserts were great! kudos to the pastry chef.More

We arrived early and seated right away. I made reservations online and noted that it was my wife’s birthday. The waiter brought 2 glasses of champagne to the table and introduced himself. The food was very delicious and service was great too. This place is...expensive but we knew this going in. We will try to make this a yearly tradition for my wife’s birthday. Definitely recommend this restaurant.More

Ok, my wife and I have been there a lot. Only one problem for us, the food comes out of the kitchen far to fast. Sometimes it’s like an F1 race.

Loved this place. Best steak I've ever had (and I've been to the usual stalwarts in NYC), tender and cooked perfectly, nice cut of well marbled meat. Service was perfect. Wine list had everything one could want without being overly confusing or costly. Definitely will...return when in Rochester again.More
