This restaurant is down a little side street and offers a good range of traditional Greek fare. We arrived pre sun set - always a good plan to avoid the crowds that descend after the event in Oia. The owner was pleasant and gave us a run down of the menu - stessing the ‘home cooked’ and lack of additives. As we waited for our meal a couple of musicians began to play giving a nice ambiance. After sunset the place quickly filled up and the owners spiel about the food was delivered more quickly and I saw his stress levels lift. I was left unimpressed as I saw him usher quite rudely a couple of tourists back onto the street to wait for a table and then about 10 minutes later show them to a table that had remained empty the entire time of their wait. Perhaps he’d had a no show? He was then pretty curt and dismissive with their meal choices. Relations seemed a bit tense with the other staff too ! The food was good for us, the music was excellent but maybe avoid busy times to see the owner in a better frame of mind!

Whilst the food is undoubtedly good and the atmosphere traditionally Greek, there are a few things that let this place down. The owner is keen to give everyone the spiel of the home environment and home cooked food, yet he really does come across as a bit arrogant as a few reviews suggest. I don’t write many reviews and don’t want to come across as that “negative tourist” but felt I needed to say that:
- it is pricey and at the end of the meal I did not get a proper bill, just told to come to to the counter and pay €138 for a simple dinner for two without dessert. I was a bit taken aback as to no bill and then being asked immediately how much % I wanted to add on as a tip.
- Spiros the owner was actually asleep near the kitchen when we arrived and my son was a little embarrassed to find him there on his way to the toilet.
- the kitchen is not that clean
- because the owner was asleep, we didn’t get the “spiel” but did get it from the other waiter who, by the way, was lovely and works very hard
- the place has been there for 24 years, gets rave reviews so I think the odd occasion when something is “off” seems to happen when the owner is in a mood or guests ask too many questions
- I tried to ask who makes the food and if it was family and just told “we do” by the owner when paying
I think most people will love it - the food is lovely if overpriced, and the musicians delightful - other guests there on the evening were clearly having a wonderful time.

If you're visiting Santorini, a stop at Candouni Restaurant and Bar in Oia is an absolute must! We had the pleasure of dining here recently, and it truly captured the essence of Greek culture and hospitality.
The restaurant offers a warm, romantic atmosphere, with charming traditional decor that makes you feel at home the moment you step inside. The food is simply outstanding – homemade, authentic, and bursting with the flavors of Greece. Every dish felt like it was made with love, from the fresh ingredients to the careful preparation.
Adding to the experience was the delightful Greek music, beautifully played on the kithara, creating the perfect backdrop for a magical evening. The service was equally fantastic – friendly, attentive, and filled with humor. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, sharing stories and laughter that made the evening even more enjoyable.
Candouni is more than just a restaurant; it’s a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the local culture and cuisine. We highly recommend it for anyone visiting Oia – it’s a hidden gem you won't want to miss!

We came here on a Tuesday afternoon for a light lunch and were told by the host quite brusquely to dine elsewhere. I don’t know what his problem was, but with such hostile treatment, I have to assume the food isn’t worth the price either. There are a hundred other restaurants in Oia and this is the only one where we were abused without warning.

The place is typical. We had a good lunch but didn't really have a choice of dishes as the boss more or less imposed specialties on us... Greek salad, eggplant caviar, lemon potatoes and tuna tartare! Nothing fabulous! But it was good. Two glasses of rosé each, or four in total for an amount of 56 euros! Very expensive . In the end, we had lunch for 120.50 euros. This lunch left us with the aftertaste of a scam! In Greece, for a week, we have lunch and dinner very well for around 50 euros for two

What a memorable dinner! Our family of 6 adults, including our 2 daughters (one pregnant) and our 2 sons-in-law found this gem on a side street in Oia. We were drawn in by the live music performed by 2 Greek musicians on stringed instruments.
We were able to sit on the outside patio to eat al fresco, and the manager, Spiro, made our evening memorable with witty interactions with us and other patrons.
Our delicious dinner was authentic Greek homestyle food that has been whittled down to its favorites since its opening in 1847. I enjoyed the rooster entree. The manager Spiro explained that rooster is all white meat since the males don't need the muscles in their legs to squat over eggs to keep them warm.
Spiro told us talked to us about the history of Candouni, pointing out that even the red and white checkerboard floor is authentically original. There were candles in wall niches that had dripped candle wax for years to make abstract sculptures.
The family dog was wandering the alleyways outside the restaurant when we arrived, but, after some Easter week fireworks went off unexpectedly outside, the dog wandered through the restaurant barking his displeasure at the noise, lol
We thoroughly enjoyed being made to feel at home in this authentic Greek restaurant.

We had a meal for four people last week. We had starters main dessert and wine and the average for a meal was £250 in any of the restaurants. In 5his restaurant we were charged nearly £400. Good food but beware of prices, very very expensive.

Waiter was very unrespectable and not polite. We did our reservations at noon time, but when we came to have a dinner in the evening time- weather send my wife to the door entrance, even without asking to the reservation. Advice to this cafe to be more polite to the guests. If you want to make service to sheep then go ahead.

The waiter was already stressed and overwhelmed from the start with only a handful of tables.
We hadn't even sat down when he surprised us by asking if we wanted still or non-carbonated water. We didn't actually want any, but then we said carbonated. So far so good. He then came with a large bottle of still water. He then asked if we wanted bread without letting us look at the menu beforehand. We didn't order any. The menu then said that bread costs extra.
When we wanted to place our food order, he asked us as he was setting the table next to us if we wanted to order. When we said yes, he didn't sit down at our table, but continued setting the table and said from there: Tell me what you want. At some point he came to our table and said that the dish I had ordered went well with potatoes. I told him that I didn't want potatoes. He then said that I should have potatoes with my order. I told him again that I didn't want to order potatoes. After that was sorted out, after a while he brought part of the order and just shoveled some onto my husband's plates without asking. But the order was mine and not my husband's.
The food itself was unfortunately very oily.
When he cleared the table next to us, he asked if everything was OK. He did the same with other guests, so you didn't know who he was talking to. In between, he kept loudly cursing someone in the restaurant.
When we then ordered the bill, we were asked to go to the bar and when we wanted to pay with a card, he asked for a tip. Of course, after that question, there was no tip. And after that behavior, there was certainly no tip.

We read the reviews on here and on Google, the “negative” reviews to us, just made us realise how passionate this family is about their restaurant, and so we booked. We were looking for an authentic Greek dining experience and we definitely got one, we felt we were welcomed into the families home with open arms. The food and service was incredible and we would have booked again if staying longer.
We watched a couple come in, not say they they had a reservation, and be seated inside, they then complained they wanted to be outside, the owner explained the tables outside were reserved, at which point the guests said they had actually reserved and were then shown their outside table, but the way they spoke during the interaction wasn’t nice and they ended up leaving shaking their heads as their energy was met by the owner. He said shall we start again and go to your table or argue about it for the next hour, they said no, he said no problem bye then.
You need to reserve and arrive as if you’re going to someone’s home for dinner, not treat the team like they are below you.
Thanks guys
Ps the dog sleeping on sofa was amazing

Everything about our meal at Candouni was top notch - the food (don't miss the roasted potatoes and lamb chops!), the ambiance (beautiful live music), and the service (shoutout to Dimitri and Andreas). Spiro, the owner, is so passionate about great Greek food and ensuring his guests are well taken care of. Be sure to make reservations - it gets crowded during season. You don't want to miss this beautiful enclave in Oia.

We stumbled upon it down a quieter street of santorini. We stopped by for lunch, there was only 1 other table in. Our food was lovely & when we ordered bread for our aubergine dip, we got complimentary tsatziki & fava dip too. We also ordered 2 greek salads. Our server was really grumpy and sullen, not unfriendly just not friendly! Food was standard greek lunch food. Definitely not as bad an experience as others have said!!

My husband and I just had a magical dinner at Candouni. The owner (also only waiter, Maitre d’, and sommelier) is incredibly passionate about his restaurant and food! While this may make service not flow as smoothly as you like it is so worth any wait you experience ( which quite honestly wasn’t as long as some reviews may infer). We also had the most amazing guitarists playing live Greek music to add to the atmosphere. This is a family style restaurant and truly made us feel special! Thank you!

If I had to defend this restaurant, I would say that the owner is “very particular about which guests he serves.” We have been staying in Oia a few days just a couple doors down from Candouni and I had always been charmed by the live music, so after dinner my wife and I stepped inside for a coffee and a glass of wine. We assumed that a place with the word “bar” on the sign would serve drinks. We sat down at one of the many empty tables and the owner quickly came to our table asking if we were eating food. When we said no, he rushed us out saying “it’s a restaurant and when people order drinks it gets out of hand but here’s the card if we want to come back and order food”. We left quietly but heard other guests whispering that it was strange too. I’m just disappointed in the gap between the nice experience I was expecting and the rather rude (somewhat snobby) treatment we received. Just a small thing but I suggest maybe removing the word “bar” from the sign, in the hopes that other people can avoid being as disappointed as I was.

After visiting the touristic places in Oia I wanted to lose myself in a l place far from the crowd and my eyes fall in front of this cute restaurant. It is quite hidden and you’ll have to look carefully for it. When I was eating another customer enter and the owner explain to her « I Focus on the Food Quality not on the View » and I think it’s beautiful that the restaurant is a family place own by a family.
To sum up the food is good. The people who work there are so nice and you can feel the family atmosphere all over the place.
