For the uninitiated, the words Irish and good food may sound oxymoronic. Yet, I find that food from Ireland is not only at par with the best Europe has to offer, but also has a personality all its own producing excellent lamb and fish dishes...as well as extraordinary versions a chowders and stews. Having traveled extensively through that beautiful country, I was pleasantly surprised by Garvan's offerings. Let's start with the good; the owner is Irish and the atmosphere, with a setting in an old Mid-Hudson farm house truly makes you feel you are in the countryside across the pond. Try the clam chowder, hearty and creamy, and follow that with a Guinness infused Irish Stew....your taste buds will have a party. Finish it off with another Guinness infused dish, this time in the form of a creme brulee....simply outstanding. I strongly suggest you accompany the meal with a Guinness or two. This magnificent brew is not a beer, it's the soul of Irish culture and an important part of the Irish experience. I you like seafood, I would highly recommend the fish and chips. You get two generous pieces of wonderfully battered fish and the best fries this side of the Atlantic. I thought they were twice fried, but it turns out they are made with truffle oil and parmesan cheese.....not to be missed. Can't wait to go back to try the bangers and mash. Now for the bad....oh wait, there is no bad. Service is professional, prompt and friendly, and prices will not scare your wallet. Garvan's is definitely a keeper.More
