My husband, daughter, son and I went to Garvan's for the first time to celebrate my birthday. We sat outside in the screened in Patio which was beautiful. We shared two appetizers - stuffed mushrooms and a Caprese special - both were good. For entrees,...we got the hamburger (did not care for the Focaccia bun), the shortribs - VG but not enough gravey served with it, the lamb stew - VG, and the seafood trio - VG - so I would say 3 out of 4 entrees were VG. My husband and i got the house salad and it was VG. Too much food though - and pretty pricey (Shortribs was the most expensive at $43) - next time (and we will go back) we would probably go with one appetizer and maybe skip (or share) a salad. Our waitress was excellent and I am so sorry I don't remember her name but we sat on the Patio and our reservation was at 6:30 on a Wednesday evening in the beginning of August. Beautiful setting! <3More

My wife and I drove to Garvan's while visiting the Hudson Valley and were not disappointed. The restaurant is tucked away in a lovely cull de sac in New Palz. From the outside is rather uninspiring but once inside you find yourself in a warm,...comfortable put atmosphere. We ate on the screen enclosed patio in order to enjoy the summer weather. The service and the food were excellent and the variety of beers and ales was impressive. Without a doubt, order the braised short rib with the garlic mashed potatoes. The meat was flavorful, tender and just fell off the bone. The mashed potatoes were unlike any that we've had in the past and were delicious. There is no doubt that we would return for another meal.More

Ate at Garvins yesterday based on TA recommendation and we weren’t disappointed!! The corned beef Sammy was TO DIE FOR! My husband had bangers and mash and he raved about the bangers (Garvins uses the same butcher for corned beef and bangers) A must go...if you are in the New Paltz areaMore

I feel kind of bad writing this review. We’ve been patrons here for a few years now. The last few times we’ve gone, we’ve been disappointed in the quality of food, but our experience tonight sealed the deal for this 2 star review. Ambiance and...service are still good. We sat outside which was great, but noticed that inside was a little smelly/musty as we walked through to be seated outside. A bad smell in a restaurant sets the stage for questioning how things are being managed. They need to get to the root of this ASAP in order to keep from turning people off. We ordered salads to start. They used to serve a large portion that was fresh, flavorful and properly dressed. My salad tonight was about the size of the palm of my hand and was way over dressed to the point of being soggy. My husband ordered the ribeye for $39 and it was about 3/8 thick and had a weird (possibly canned?) sauce that was extremely disappointing. Potatoes were banquet style -missing any fresh, gourmet taste or flare. When you go out to dinner for a special occasion, you shouldn’t feel as though you’re 1 of 200 getting served a mediocre plate. At a banquet, you expect that. Not when you go out for a special meal. I ordered the shrimp scampi which was served with a lemon basil sauce. There was 4 teeny tiny shreds of basil. The rest was dried parsley. Really, they couldn’t afford basil which SOO easy to come by? The dish had Poor flavor (mostly plain butter), and shrimp were on the small side. I asked for Parmesan with my pasta, and they brought me mozzarella shreds. Really, no Parmesan? How could they not have a staple for a pasta dish?? We would consider our meal worse than standard diner food. Way overpriced for what we received.More

Best restaurant, Iris pub and place to meet friends in New Paltz, if not the entire Hudson Valley. The food is very good, Garvan will greet you, and make sure you have a pint at the pub! You’ll need reservations and Thursday nights is usually...Irish night with music, story telling and a good laugh.More

The food was good…I had the Caesar salad, which was tasty and overdressed, so was a bit salty…the dressing is good and is made in the restaurant. I had the duck breast, which came with a sweet potato puree and asparagus. The duck was cooked...to medium rare as requested and the vegetables were tasty. The dining experience suffered because I was seated in the screened in patio and felt isolated there, since I was the only one there, and the door to the restaurant was closed with a sign saying “Please use the main entrance”. It was early, being 5:30pm, and the main indoor restaurant was empty, but there were people seated outside on the lawn, since two other parties came in when I did.More

I booked dinner reservations at Garvan's to kick off our cycling weekend in New Paltz and was pleasantly surprised - on a number of levels. First, when you pull up, it doesn't look like much and is situated like the 19th hole of an adjacent...golf course. In fact, my husband and one of our other friends, were ready to leave before we even got inside. I convinced them to reserve judgment until we had a chance to look inside. Once we did, they were "sold". We sat at the small but cozy bar, sampled some tasty draft beer and chatted with the bartendress, Alanna, who was lovely and informative. I had made reservations for inside the pub area, but upon seeing the outdoor seating, wished I had arranged for a table outdoors, but alas, it was too late and the outdoors seating was all spoken for. Regardless, our party of 5 was well attended to and the service was as excellent as the food! Like several other review, I'd have to say, the short rib was the star of the entrees. Although I understand the fish n chips were also quite good!! Garvan himself came by our table and also informed us that they (Garvan's) run premier trips to Ireland! Who better to lead such tours than someone from the Emerald Isle, himself - like Garvan?!! Needless to say, we were impressed on several levels - the ambiance, the Irish music, the service, the draft beer selection and the food!! Should we find ourselves back in New Paltz, I am sure we will make time to stop again at Garvan's.More

I have NO WORDS! But I will find some ….PERFECTION, OUTSTANDING, INCREDIBLE!! Just to name a few. We enjoyed every single thing about this place. It was our first visit but this family is so friendly we felt like we had known them for years....The setting is so beautiful. We sat out back in the patio area but all of the spots both inside and the adorable garden seating was fantastic. Anyone walking by was as friendly as they could be. Garvan himself came out and was charming and welcoming and he and his son were so sweet together it made me get emotional. They were legitimately so happy to be working side by side . Every bit of food and drink was EXCEPTIONAL. Highly recommend THE RED for a cocktail. We tried a few but that was everyone’s favorite. As far as appetizers the stuffed mushrooms were incredible and hands down the short rib for top entree . It was the best thing we have ever eaten and we have eaten ALOT!! Then because we were already STUFFED, why not get dessert? We had NEVER heard of Banoffee pie and I have never been so glad to get dessert. It’s one of the 3 that Garvans wife makes herself. ITS DELICIOUS!!!! One of the tastiest things I’ve ever eaten . This place is a MUST DO!! You wont regret it. Cant wait to go backMore

I am actually having trouble expressing how much I enjoyed my lunch at Garvan's. I had the clam chowder and seared Scallop appetizer and was very satisfied. A more charming place I could not image. Best of all...it is away from the student population of...this rightly proud college town. Thank you all for a great experience.More

Lovely atmosphere and creative menu. A little pricey, but it felt like a classy night out so it was worth it. Only thing is, the beet salad is just some stacked beats with very little taste so i don’t recommend that. The food took a...long time to come out (40 minutes or so) but we didn’t mind too much. Very nice place! The polenta cake is unreal.More

We have been to Garvan’s several times, some times to celebrate birthdays and friendships with others. We have always had a fantastic dinner, whatever we chose as an entree. Our favorites have become the shrimp scampi appetizer, leek and potato soup, short ribs with choices...of great drinks and desserts. As second choices the pork chops and scallops are always a good option. Garvans might be described as a prime quality Irish restaurant in an old restored home, somewhat eclectic, but having been to many restaurants and pubs in Ireland, it is pure Irish hospitality. We always enjoy the food, drinks and people at this fine restaurant. What’s especially nice is the reception from the staff, as well as the owner, who yes checks in regularly with his guests to make sure everything is fine. A class act for sure.More

What a wonderful lunch!!! So glad we found Garvan’s. A friend told us about it but we couldn’t remember the name. So we looked up restaurants in New Paltz and the name rang a bell . As soon as we walked in the door I...knew we were going to like it. Oh my the food was exceptional. We weren’t rushed and totally enjoyed sitting in front of the fire. We both orders different things which allowed us to sample. The taste was perfection. We will be back in the Spring and will tell friends to make the trip. Kevin and Mary Ellen FlanaganMore

Stopped here for lunch on the basis of strong Trip Advisor reviews and the entire experience exceeded already high expectations. Food was delicious. Best clam chowder I've had in a long while and the Irish specialties were flavorful and perfectly executed. The staff were all...very friendly, and the setting in an old house was lovely. We were particularly pleased that we were able to be seated on the screened-in (and heated) porch. Will definitely return. Recommend very highly.More
