Went here for our office holiday lunch! The server was very nice and the food was delicious. We were the only ones in the restaurant for lunch so it was excellent service.

Ate here a few years ago and not much has changed. Three of us had shrimp scampi over risotto, it was tasteless. Didn't even eat the risotto. Three had the pork cutlet special which was good. Nothing to write home about here. Had to find...the waiter to get more drinks and after the first hour we never got any more water.More

My husband and I stopped here recently for a mid-afternoon meal. He had heard great things and was looking to try it. At the end of the holiday season, the place was beautifully decorated and the atmosphere was lovely. They have a lunch special menu...each weekday until 3:30 so I opted for the Eggplant Rollatini which was truly one of the best I've had. My husband had Shrimp Fra Diavolo off the standard menu and thought it was "good, not great" though he never articulated why he characterized it that way. We were both disappointed in the zucchini stick appetizer. When you bit into a stick the zucchini slid right out and we were consistently left with the outside while the vegetable ended on our plates. Service was great, wine was good and the place was charming. I suspect we will be back!More

Quick summary: delicious food, well-priced. Emphasis on Italian and American favorites. Handsome dining room. Friendly, professional service. This is a favorite of the family when I stop in to visit. The menu is fairly wide, so there is always something that everyone wants. We generally...split one of the sizable dinner salads (chopped $12, Caesar $8, other options. An individual garden salad is $6.). Starters are also of a shareable size. Calamari $14-$16 depending on preparation, wings $13, cold antipasto for two $15, with more in the $8 - $15 range. Excellent pizzas $17+ range. For mains, pastas are in the high $-teens to low $20's. We particularly enjoy the mains of meats and seafood, which come with appropriate sides (many $19 - mid $20's, with steaks in the $30's.). We've always had excellent preparations here, fresh and tasty. (I had the filet of sole special the recent night -- $25.). I think there is a burger. You might ask for my father's favorite, not shown on the menu, but available: jumbo cocktail shrimp, at $3 each. He also is a fan of their fish dishes and steaks. Full bar, well-priced. Glasses of wine are in the $9-$10 range for a generous pour. (I forget if it was happy hour.) The dining rooms are in the handsome old train station. Tables, booths, or sit at the bar. The booths are fun, in the retro-circle style. The service is always friendly and professional, as it was again the night I visited. To sum: this is a place that I wish I lived closer to, and another good reason to visit the family.More

We ordered Modern on the Rails from Uber Eats. Our order was a Chicken Scapariello and NY Strip Steak. The chicken was tough, probably overcooked. The Steak was so full of fat and grizzle that it was not eaten. We called the restaurant and were...told that since we ordered through Uber Eats we would have to take our complaints to them. The woman on the phone said if they delivered this order themselves, they would have issued an immediate credit. This is unacceptable since the problem is the quality of the meat not the delivery. No restaurant should serve a piece of meat that is inedible.More

Had bad experiences with previous ownership so had not visited in years. Had a nice family dinner: dining hall is very attractive and modern (the original fire place was saved - nice touch), menu is essentially Italian-American with not too many frills (the black linguine...with sea food were fine), nice cocktail list. Service would gain in being more attentive. Overall, decent value for money.More

My wife and I decided to return to this attractive place after it changed hands and its name. We had a good wine (Montepulciano) and salads, and the oil served with the bread was nicely flavored. Our entrees left something to be desired, though they...were not bad. The pizza, my wife said, was okay, but not as good as the ones at Le Sirene in Larchmont. My eggplant parmigiana was also okay, but seemed mass-produced, and was only one layer, covered with tomato sauce and cheese, rather than artfully layered. Considering we saved some money by using Groupon, the value was adequate. Maybe we’ll try something else there next time, like fish, chicken or meat.More

The restaurant is the second oldest train station on the New Haven Line. They transformed it to a gracious dining hall complete with fireplace at one end high ceilings, and period finishes. The happy hour is good as are various dishes like scallops over risotto.

Modern on the rails was recommended to me by friends so I decided to order out a fairly standard dish, Chicken Parmesan and to try their chicken vegetable soup. I decided to pick it up so that I could take a look at the restaurant...itself. It’s a very warm and inviting space, the fairly large dining room is divided into two sections. The maître d’ was very friendly and accommodating. I think that the most Important thing in Italian dishes is the sauce. The chicken Parm. was a very generous portion and the sauce was really delicious, I mopped it all up The soup was also an excellent choice. Their menu is very reasonably priced. As it is a redesigned the railroad station there is plenty of parking in the lot, there is a four hour limit which is certainly enough time to enjoy your meal. Next time I will eat in the restaurant.More

First experience at Modern on the Rails; we thoroughly enjoyed our selection: eggplant parm, sweet, tender and a huge portion which was excellent the following evening for dinner; Bolognese with fettuccine. My husband would have preferred Pappardelle but the fettuccine worked just as well with...all the right ingredients. A beautiful arugula salad made for a nice presentation. The muscles were the best that we've had in a long time served with an exquisite sauce. Wait staff was friendly and very attentive. We will be back!More
