My wife and I met up with a friend to have lunch at Sammy’s Fish Box. The food was well worth the drive from New Jersey; our friend had a much shorter drive since she lives in New York. Sammy’s is near the end of a street full of seafood restaurants, but you can’t miss it—Santa is located just off of the roof of the huge complex. Free valet parking is located just across the street from the restaurant; please remember to tip the valet!
Once inside, a hostess seated us in a nice booth and water was brought over. Our beverage orders were taken and shortly thereafter, our meal orders were taken. Please note, the volume of food served is nearly overwhelming but tasty! Lunch started with a platter that included cornbread, small loaf of artisan bread and a plate of peppers and pickled vegetables. The corn bread was quite good as was the crusty bread; butter was also provided. The next course was a garden salad with choices of dressing. The salad was fresh and dressing was provided in a small container on the side. For my entrée, I selected the blackened swordfish which was accompanied by a uniquely delicious tarter sauce and French fries. The swordfish was good, but not the traditional blackened. Similarly, the fries were good, but not great. Our server brought another course to accompany our lunch; rice pilaf and ears of corn. The rice was excellent!
Thankfully, our server provided aluminum container to take the plentiful leftovers home. Between my meal and my wife’s leftover crab stuffed sole, we had an additional three meals.
We couldn’t even think about dessert!
This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but the food is good and plentiful. A great place to catch up with old friends. The staff was friendly and helpful and the restaurant was very clean.

Sammy' s Fish Box is a large restaurant on City Island Ave. near the southern end of the island. It has several large, bright and comfortably furnished rooms. The service was friendly and efficient. And they have a large parking lot (valet service).
We went there for lunch. Although they have a large menu, there were no lunch selections - all main courses - and relatively expensive. The portions were large with several extras for the table - 3 types of bread, cheese, a dish of pickled vegetables - very good - and a side dish of corn-on-the-cob and rice. A lot of food.
We ordered fried oysters and soft-shelled crabs - but they were over done.
But overall, it was a good experience.

Hanging out in my hometown of Yonkers and I've got some family from out of town here as well. So when we're all here there's something we absolutely have to do, go to City Island for seafood. Lol. My parents are a little on the older side so when they say "City Island", they meant a specific restaurant. However, the wait time for that place was so insanely long that we tried someone where new... Sammy's Fish Box. Here's how it went...
Atmosphere/Appearance: Right on the main strip crammed in among the other businesses is this gem. There's actually 2 locations very near each other so things can get a bit confusing. Parking is a nightmare, honestly. Good luck. If you can find a spot on the street, like I did, that's your best bet. However, if you can't find a place on the street there are parking lots up and down the block that will be happy to take your money. Once inside you're a bit overwhelmed. It's so busy. Busy with customers and people, but also busy with decor. There are glowing signs above your head, light wood EVERYWHERE, plants and paintings seem to be randomly scattered throughout and the layout can be confusing. I guess all you really need to know is where your table is and where the bathroom is. Lol.
Service: I can't remember who took care of us, but there were 8 of us and they didn't miss a beat.
Food: The menu here is huge. There are so many variations of dishes then those same dishes can be fried or put into combinations. Lol. There's just so much. Just visit their website. To start the meal complimentary bread with cheese and pickled vegetables is brought out to the table to share. For my entree I went with the shrimp-stuffed sole with a side or corn on the cob and rice. Delicious. It wasn't fine-dining level, but still VERY tasty. Everything has a delicious garlic-buttery flavor that just works! Lol.
Value: It's seafood AND it's New York. Do your own math. Lol. $54.95 for my entree which again, includes the entree, the complimentary stuff and sides. So, come prepared to pay, but you'll really enjoy yourself.
In conclusion, I'm glad that Johnny's Reef was so busy because it gave my family a different place to try out. You know? I'm all about trying new restaurants so it's about time they did too! I'd totally check this place out again. Their menu is long enough to keep any busy for a LONG time!

Today, I went to Sammy’s for the first (1st) time in seven (7) years. I went to Sammy’s Shrimp Box for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The lunch specials were incredible. I got broiled sole, alongside: a salad with some dressing, a pile of linguini with some garlic, and an ice cream cake. I also had a complimentary assortment of breads, cheeses, and vegetables. The portions were HUGE, all of the foods tasted AMAZINGLY, and the prices felt like they had not ever been changed since the post-pandemic inflation. The service from all of the staff was fantastic. The restaurant was well-decorated and it was very clean. The food came out rather quickly, too. This restaurant is located off of the main thoroughfare by the very end of City Island. There is a free parking lot for the patrons, but it was thankfully not controlled by a valet when I was there.

We waited for our food for over an hour. A family came in not even a half hour before we got our food and our food came out at the same time. When we said something to the manager and the waiter they became upset telling us that we were a large party so our food took longer. Not to mention we were a party of 12 and the other people were a party of 10. We were black and the other people were Spanish which explains a lot. This was my first and last time visiting here.

I've been coming to Sammy's since I was in college but this was my first time ordering food. I ordered $160 worth of food for my moms birthday and they forgot the sides. When I called to let them know a very rude man said "no one is coming back out there for the sides". I said that was fine but asked to be refunded for the food we didn't receive. He then stated..."the sides are free so it is what it is" and hung up on me. Definitely won't visit this run down establishment again. Horrible service!

I have been eating here since 1988 and the food still tastes the same. The prices have gone up but the quality and portions are still the same. Always visit when I go to NY.

Nice place but the Paella was extremely big for 2. It was a waste. They should have Paella for 2.
The photo does not show the real size. It was huge. We gave to friends and still had to through it away. It’s sea food so you can only keep it for a day.

I ordered the paella de espana for a take out event. The price of the paella is now almost $200!!
The paella is supposed to contain jumbo shrimp, clams, mussels, Maine lobster, snow crab legs, king crab legs, chicken and chorizo cooked in yellow rice. I ordered the dish without the pork chorizo and what I received was dish that contained NO KING CRAB LEGS, NO JUMBO SHRIMP, NO MUSSELS, SPARCE LOBSTER AND MOSTLY RICE. I called and spoke with one of the managers named Stacy who informed me that there was nothing that she could do since I did not bring it back. I told her that I lived over an hour away and had guests over, so it was not possible for me to return it. She was extremely unhelpful and unapologetic and merely stated that all of the dishes are made following the same recipe. Save your money and go elsewhere unless you would like a VERY EXPENSIVE PLATE OF RICE!

My husband planned date night and took me to this amazing place. The food was great and so was the service. It was out first time to city island and we both enjoyed it equally. A must try!

The dishes and soup we ordered were extremely tasty, and our waitress was attentive. Too much wasted food accompanied these, and the server tended to ask us to pass along dishes and finished food instead of walking around our booth. The wasted stuff was lamentable.

You are not missing much by not coming to city island....it is overpriced, and for the masses who would rather pay a premium for sub-par food than take a drive to Portland Maine or down to Delaware/Maryland for some real good seafood.
