On or about July 25th on a Sunday, I visited this restaurant in bethpage for the very first time. I was in the mood for some very good seafood and was looking for a restaurant, so I went on the internet looking at different places...that were open. I have been to many restaurants in my lifetime (I've even traveled the world just to visit famous restaurants across the globe, but for this review, I will stick to New York locations). I am a black New Yorker in my near 40s who is a foodie born and raised in the South Bronx. I grew up culturally on West Indian style cuisine, and eating at restaurants such as "Mark Spot" in Jamaica Queens and "Footprints" Jamaican restaurant in Brooklyn. My family and friends would also go to "Sammy's fish box", "lobster House" and many other restaurants in City Island. I've been to wonderful restaurants in the city of Manhattan also, with elaborate expensively exquisite architecture and interior designs such as Blue water grill, Sea fire grill, Benjamin's steakhouse, empire steakhouse, Wolfgang's steakhouse, Keens Steakhouse etc. All these places had great food, and for the most part good service (except for a few disrespectful blunders on behalf of some staff members... looking at you see fire grill in Manhattan). However, I've been eating at multiple restaurants in a somewhat 40-year time span, visiting upscale top notch restaurants, Brazilian steakhouses seafood restaurants chop shops etc even celebrating exciting moments of my life at restaurants such as Grand lux Cafe in garden City New York, Galo Tavern 18 and 02 Korean BBQ in Bell boulevard Queens New York. But on this Sunday in july, I was actually going to visit a restaurant in woodhaven boulevard Queens NY called "London Lenny's", however London Lenny's was not open during the time I was trying to get to a seafood restaurant. So I decided to give Popei's a shot. Once I entered I was immediately greeted by two women with the biggest smiles on their faces. Visiting multiple restaurants throughout my life, I can often speculate if the employees are genuine or if they are just being cordial for the sake of the job (which is not necessarily a bad thing). The women here at popei's greeted me, made jokes with me and I can tell that the staff gets along with each other just by the way that they interacted with each other. I even noticed that a few addressed each other with nicknames, showing that there was great camaraderie among the coworkers that probably extended and existed even outside of the work atmosphere. There was a third woman also, and older woman. I don't remember this older lady's name (maybe her name was Marie?), but she told me she was Italian (I would later realize that perhaps most of the staff is Italian ?). I was appreciative how she was so friendly and professional towards me; she actually spoke with me, making me feel as if I was a neighbor who lives close by her or another person she knew growing up in the same school she attended (that's the feeling I got and I think the best way to try to describe and compare it). I felt very comfortable being there, because the rest of the staff co-signed their gratitude for seeing me and having me as a guest and customer. It was a very warm feeling. Honestly, this was different, this "felt" like it may have been real. I can go on about the staff, even those who didn't speak but as they walked by doing their jobs and made eye contact with me, walk by with smiles on their faces acknowledging my existence and that I was a guest at the restaurant, showing their appreciation for me being there. On August 22nd, during the hurricane, many places were not open for business. I needed some good grub and began to check their internet to see who was open. Again, I would have went to woodhaven boulevard in Queens to London Lenny's, but their website indicated that because of the hurricane they were not going to be open at all. Then I looked up on the internet for other restaurants that would have been open, and Popeis was open during the storm. So I placed an order to get takeout. Once I arrived, again just like the month before I was greeted very warmly, professionally treated and felt as if I was among close friends. This is what causes me to believe that perhaps the affable decorum of the staff is genuine, since I do not believe they recognized me from the month before, yet still treated me with the same type of warm "open arms". Although I was ordering takeout again, one of the waitresses even offered to help me carry the food to my car, and joked about going outside in the rain with hurricane winds with me. I told her she did not have to yet she helped me to the front door with the food. Okay, that's it for the staff for now I can go on trust me I can. But let me bring up that the food is amazing! Everything I have ordered so far I've loved! The lobster, the crab, even the sides! The clams (baked and fried), the shrimp and other seafood are outstanding! Great food on top of great service is just a great restaurant. The atmosphere is similar to other seafood restaurants (again comparing it to Sammy's fish box in the Bronx, lobster House or London Lenny's in Queens). Nothing to ostentatious however it is neat clean and comfortable. I wish I would have found out about this restaurant so much earlier in my life. One last thing I'll bring up, I also noticed that the pricing for the food is reasonable compared to other restaurants in the same elk. For the food I purchased, had I have gone to other restaurants with similar menu items it is possible I could have paid close to 33% to about 50% more on the bill. I don't know how this restaurant does it, but they're able to keep a pretty decent pricing with great food compared to other restaurants. In all, this is going to be one of my favorite spots to visit on a monthly basis, I am becoming a fan quickly of this restaurant and of the staff. There is also one more thing I'll bring up about the staff (I told you I can say a lot about it but one more thing), there was a gentleman there (not sure if he was Spanish or not), he had a neatly groomed and trimmed beard and he had glasses, he didn't say a word to me, but as he walked by a couple of times he greeted me with just the biggest smile and eye contact. He wasn't my server he wasn't directly involved with anything that had to do with my order, but the simple fact that he acknowledged me with a smile and a head nod made me know that this is a place I am going to be visiting now on for quite some time. Thank you for making my Sunday dinners for the past couple of months great ones!More

From the minute we entered the restaurant, Dawn was pleasant, she gave us a lovely table. Our server was Janis, who was super sweet and efficient. We got everything quickly. Other servers also helped to deliver the food or clear the table. The food was...very tasty and hot. First time I have gone to a restaurant and didnot have to whip out my traveling bottle of hot sauce. Best half clams and oysters. Everything was fresh and delicious.More

Also we were taken right away as we had reservations. Also the service was impeccable....One last thing was the prices were reasonable for what you get. Wonderful clean open restaurant. Family owned/ operated ... located close to all major highways. Promise you'll be stuffed after leaving here. Soups are plentiful w fresh fish. Salads are served up on cold plates with fresh vegetables and exceptional choices for dressings. Lobsters, clams, flounder,...shrimp and scallops are delicious. The appetizers are a delight to the most discerning palate! Desserts will fill your belly with comfort. The waitress was friendly, knowledgeable and worked with our food allergies. There was enough for dinner the next 2 evenings. A hidden gem Also for land people chicken, burgers, steaks, pork chops are excellent!More

It doesn't get any better for a seafood restaurant that is not even close to any beach, ocean or a lake. Yet it serves up the freshest seafood everytime! It has become a destination for any seafood lover. No need to pay extra for any...view, there's none but just good well prepared seafood so delicious! Oh yes, they too have great BBQ ribs/steaks/chicken for those who might no like or desire seafood. Don't know why? Popei's accomodates everyone with pastas, sandwhiches & burgers. Kids love it here too because they have kiddie favorites too. Love that the owner/chef always comes out from the kitchen to say hello to his customers and is sincere about it too! He's been in business for over 36 years and the restaurant is going strong, better than ever! Another 50 years more? Totally! If you love lobsters, crab legs, calamari, flounder, crab cakes, steamers, mussles, clams, fish & chips, seafood pasta...they got you covered. Something for everyone in your hungry family or friends. Just come with your comfy, waist extended clothes and mangia mangia mangia. Full bar for those who get thirsty with their meals and awesome desserts for those who can handle even more calories. Seasoned waitresses that really take care of you and trust me...the best seafood restaurant in Long Island with no muss no fuss, casual all the way for we do live on an island, Long Island. Just that it's no where near a beach, just awesome seafood! Valet parking outside or park in the residential neighborhood. Happy Eating and I'll see you around the tables as often as I can!More

I have been going to Popei's for a number of years, for me it's a neighborhood restaurant (close by). My last visit and I mean that literally was a month or so ago. I ordered take out, the fried seafood combo. I'm aware this isn't...the most elegant of foods however it was very okay. In a nutshell, every item seemed like it was commercially made and maybe even frozen. There was none of the earmarks of fresh made from scratch food. Needless to say, I will not be returning. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, and simply said for that kind of money I expect much more.More
