In the land of fields of peppers sent all around the world, there's SPARKYS. The restaurant is a Hatch tradition and attracts passers by from all over the USA. Motor cyclists groups plot their trips through New Mexico with a stop at this "attraction". Marked...by giant figures of Bob's Big Boy, Yogi, Paul Bunyon and more the indoor/mainly outdoor attraction features everything that could possibly merit one of the fresh Hatch peppers to mild dishes and shakes. You order at the "window" and 20 minutes later your name is called and your fare is ready to pick up. Picnic t ables dot the sizable lot, some under cover some not. Upon completion there's a water trough to wash hands etc. as the peppers, bbq sauce etc. can be a tad messy.....but too tasty to care. Clearly the green chile burger is the champ, however the smoked pulled pork, tacos, pineapple slaw.........something for everyone.. AND PLENTY of something. Don't pass it by. Sparky's operating hours (and days) do change, so check the website before embarking. Prices are very reasonable. Portions outstanding. Service: simple/uncomplicated.More

Every time we have driven through Hatch before the line has been so long we haven't stopped. Finally a post lunch, weekday time made it doable. The food was awesome. Great green chile! Who can complain about chicken covered in queso? They didn't have a...kid's menu so we did end up with a lot more food than we needed. I am also regretting not getting one of them milkshakes.More

On our weekend getaway in this part of New Mexico we HAD to stop and try the #1 Green Chili Cheeseburger in New Mexico. The lines were long but the wait was rather short. The food was hot and fresh and fresh. I am not...sure I would rate it #1 but is was pretty darn close!More

The food here is just as good as it's always been. Even during Covey. This is the best green chile cheeseburger in the state. I recommend ordering one for here and one to go. The menu is limited though with Covey. No sausage no corn...with green chili Etc.More

The food at Sparky’s is so good that it's worth a detour from Wyoming! The green chili cheeseburger is terrific. The chopped brisket sandwich is amazing. Even the coleslaw is great. I've never had anything here that wasn't wonderful. The place is usually really busy,...especially around lunch time (which is when I've always visited), so expect a line. Be ready with your order when you get to the front of the line (there are big menus on the front and side of the building). They have outsmarted the zombie apocalypse by putting several picnic tables behind their building and under trees in the grass between them and the bank next door. They even have a port-a-potty at the back of the parking lot with an adjacent hand washing station. Limited parking is available in a gravel lot at the rear, and because of the zombie apocalypse and some nearby construction (on 10/4/2020) is accessible only via the alley that runs behind Sparky’s and the next-door bank. Access the alley from the NORTH (the south end connecting to Hall St/Hwy 26 is currently blocked by construction) from W. Davis Street behind the Hatch Motor Vehicle Department. Once the zombies go away and Sparky’s is able once again to open its doors, be prepared for a very small place inside. Hopefully, they’ll keep the picnic tables, but if not, there is a city park (Hatch Valley Park) about a mile northwest on Hwy 187 (turn right off of Hwy 26) that has some picnic tables, trees, and a play area for the kids. Go hungry!More

I've usually had great service and my burger cooked perfectly, but this was not one of those times. I clearly asked for it medium rare, as always, but I got it marked medium...no big deal, except two bites into it showed it was well done....I brought it back and asked for medium rare, and it came back marked medium well, and it was again well done. The person at the counter insisted it was asked for medium well... I quit going to a restaurant near me since they obviously couldn't get that or other items right after trying several times, but when it's 1 hour away, my interest is lost. I'll remember my good times and go elsewhere or just use my own charcoal grill.More

I’d never heard of Hatch, but we needed to stop for gas and maybe grab a bite. Boy was I in for a treat. Apparently chile is a thing in Hatch, NM. A BIG THING. And smack in the middle of it all is an...amalgam of Americana named Sparky’s, best known for it’s green chile burgers. In COVID America, the indoor seating is closed so it’s all outside, reasonably distanced. The line may put you off, but trust me - it’s worth it. We went on a Sunday and may have been 30-45 min to take our order and another 15-20 to serve. I the double chili cheeseburger was outstanding, as well as the pulled pork, and wedge fries were good as well. Great live blues as well and all in all a very friendly ambience. This place is a JEWEL!More

Went to Sparky's burgers as heard it was the place to eat in Hatch. Was not disappointed, food was excellent. They had porta potties since the inside was closed, that was a bummer, but they did have a good hand washing station next to those....Plenty of seating in the outdoor seating area. Hope to go back one day and eat inside.More

Sparky's and their award- winning Green Chile cheeseburgers are worth a 2.5 hour drive from Albuquerque, especially when most New Mexicans like me have been dutiful about social distancing and under quarantine. I drove down for a hot, tasty, burger lunch on Sunday, and it was...all that. The fries have their fans, but I find them just okay. They now serve in plastic containers, and unfortunately presenting the burger that way meant that the delicious hot fat rendered the entire bottom bun unusable, so do ask them for plastic wear to eat the burger because your not likely going to be able to pick it up like other sandwiches. They've taken a number of measures as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic such as expanding their back outdoor patio, closing the indoor dining area, setting up a not very clean port-a-potty, and you now order from a walk up window, and you collect the food at a second adjacent window. However, despite the Governor of New Mexico's mandate that all people in New Mexico have to wear face coverings or masks and practice physical distancing, Sparky's seems to be so enamored with presumably tourist dollars or non-complying New Mexican dollars that they don't require their customers to wear masks. In fact, Sparky's own signs PASSIVELY encourage its customers to wear a mask rather than taking a firm no masks no service stance, which they no doubt know is one of the most effective and simple ways to prevent the spreading of the disease. Let me be clear, it does seem that Sparky's workers in the kitchen were all masked, but one cannot help but feel unsafe in an atmosphere where customers are NOT required to be safe. I do like Sparky's A LOT, but at this point, Sparky's joins many of its customers in not being respectful of the state's effort to prevent virus transmission.More

I would assume they would be open. Hatch is a fairly busy community, with the I-25 to I-10 Deming cut-off. Sparky's phone number is 505-750-3740. Give them a call as they can give you a definite answer.
