We enjoy coming here for dinner, particularly hibachi, and its always a fine choice. The service, however, has gone beyond rushed - there is so much pressure to turn the table or the hibachi station that is really takes away from the dining experience.

We visited Akira a couple of times years before TripAdvisor existed--which tells you how long this restaurant has been around. We remembered it being pretty good, so after a movie at the nearby AMC Voorhees we decided to return and see how it has held up.
The strip mall that hosts Akira recently received a facelift, and the restaurant itself has clearly been remodeled since our last visit. The interior is modern, with newer tables and comfortable chairs surrounded by stone and wood appointments. The generic jazz music wasn't to my taste, but at least it wasn't the Japanese muzak you get in many sushi places. The staff was friendly and professional, and our waitress spoke clear English. So far so good.
The bad news is that the food was only slightly above average. The miso soup was mostly a salty broth, the salad was ordinary, and the sushi, though acceptable, was on the small side and not especially fresh or flavorful. The two house special rolls we tried were the best part of the meal.
The real problem, however, is the pricing. For about the same money you can get a far better meal at either Mikado (Route 70) or Megu Sushi (Route 70 or Kings Highway in downtown Haddonfield). And both of those restaurants offer a wider range of offerings, more inventive offerings, and greater attention to detail (for example, we love the hot towels and sliced pineapple that end a meal at Mikado). If Akira's prices were a little more reasonable I'd have no complaints. But you can't charge what better competitors are charging if you're not able to match their quality.
So how do I account for Akira's success over so many years? Perhaps their Hibachi and other offerings are the real attraction, but I suspect that the more likely explanation is their location in a major shopping center, in proximity to a movie theater and the large condo complexes surrounding what used to be Echelon Mall. They are certainly doing a robust business--we arrived at 5:30 on a Sunday and by the time we left the restaurant was nearly full--so either I'm missing something or Akira is a case in point of the old mantra, "location, location, location." It just bothers me to think that there are tables sitting empty at better restaurants ten minutes away.
It's not that I would steer you away from Akira; it's just that I would steer you to other restaurants first. BYOB. Plenty of parking.

The 'boys' go to different restaurants prior to going to a jazz concert. This was not my pick and I didn't think I would like it. What a pleasant surprise. It was very nicely appointed with a friendly and helpful staff. It's located in a shopping center so there is plenty of room to park. The outside facade is undergoing a renovation. The food was very good and you got plenty of it.We sat in the main dining room and did not go to the hibachi part of the restaurant.

NJ is takeout only right now. There is a limited outdoor seating area for service. The order/pickup area is like being in a phone booth - all Plexiglass enclosed.
Prices are reasonable. I had the deluxe sashimi; fish was all fresh and given the paper bag delivery presentation of everything was very good - miso soup, rice, salad, and sashimi on shiso and daikon.
They have a novel system of texting you when your order is ready to pick up so there's no loitering in an enclosed area.
I'll be back

Been here 7-8 times and always enjoyed it. Took my son for his Bday. Six people in total. We reserved the back room. After seating us and took our drink orders we were told a larger party was now in that room and moved us into main Dining Room. Waitress came over ten minutes later to take our order and that’s when I requested menu’s !! Meal was good as usual. I tipped our Hibachi Chef directly (as I normally do) $10 just to say thanks for entertaining the kids. After dinner the bill came $203. I gave her $250. As we were putting on our coats she came over and said loudly. “You have to give me more money” I immediately thought i miscounted or dropped money. She then said “I have to split my Tips with the Chef and I need more money”. I was sooo embarrassed. My wife handed her another $20 very fast. Couldn’t wait to run out the door. Counted my cash in parking lot and determined I tipped $77 on a $203 bill. Had $300 cash on me. NEVER EVER will I return.

Came here for a friend birthday and got hibatchi table. Wow- great service!!
Our waitress was close by our table entire time, our drinks never got half way as she kept refilling! Hibatchi chef was funny and entertaining- food was great.
The sushi and apps we got off the menu on top of our hibatchi meals where just as great! Lots of veggie choices for those who dont eat meat or fish!
Will be back!

We loved our chef. He was full of life and was very entertaining. We loved the ambiance, the layout of the restaurant and the staff. The happy birthday song took the cake. The food was beyond delicious. Thanks to Ben and his team.

Was in a sushi mood so I referred to the list from the hotel and they had a sushi bar listed that was really close. The full name of the place is Akira Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar.
For a Tuesday night the place was pretty packed, but I was able to sit at the bar. Found out that part of the reason for the large crowd was that on Monday and Tuesday that have 30% off certain specialty rolls.
I decided to take advantage of the offer and ordered The Treasure Island roll. That roll consisted of a California roll topped with spicy lobster, mango and mango sauce. It was a good sized roll, but not anything special. I followed it up with a Shrimp Tempura roll and a Spicy Tuna roll, with a little extra "spicy" sauce on the side.
Again, good sized rolls, but again nothing special.
Unfortunately if you are looking for really good sushi, in my opinion Akira is not the place. If you want average sushi and lots of it, then this is your place .

Love this place. More importantly, I love the Pink Lady Roll. It may be one of the best sushi rolls ever invented. Order this roll and prepare yourself for fireworks in your MOUTH! My mouth is watering at the very thought of this roll. In fact, I'm going to order one right now for lunch..
It is also BYO which is fantastic. It also has hibachi which is another plus. The staff is super friendly and always smile at me. Go here. Get the Pink Lady Roll. Repeat.

On 6 hours notice the manager accommodated a last minute reservation for 32 people at the hibachi grills...with 11 different separate checks (all were correct too!). The staff and entertaining chefs were fantastic. The food was plentiful for everyone, the service for such a large group was fast (in and out the door in 2 hour), and it was the general consensus from our field hockey team that we would be back next year when we play in the local tournament! Thank you, thank you for such a great meal and experience!

I love going to Akira for lunch, especially after having a massage next door. They have very good seaweed salad, and great spider rolls and spicy tuna rolls. Service is always friendly.

This remains an excellent sushi hibachi restaurant! BYOB and 30% off Mondays and Tuesdays is just unbeatable.
One recommendation to the restaurant is that they redo the restrooms making them brighter with better light new paint job and thereby being able to feel that they are clean. They may be clean it just doesn't feel good in the restroom.

I should have trusted my instinct and gone elsewhere. I acknowledge that we arrived at the height of dinner service on a Saturday night when it was very busy. However, that is not an excuse for the receptionist to ignore people in line, including those who had reservations that weren't being honored timely. We were told that there were no seats in the hibachi area yet many empty spots were seen when I passed through there on way to wash my hands. Perhaps there was inadequate staff?
We were told that ordering hibachi in the front room would have the same food, just not the presentation factor. Perhaps, if we'd ordered something else the food might have been okay, as other diners seemed to enjoy their Sushi. In retrospect I probably should have sent the meal back to the kitchen. The multiple courses arrived so fast that we could not finish the tepid miso soup or eat the salad before the entrée arrived. Nothing tasted as if it had been freshly cooked on a grill top. The food was lukewarm. Both the salmon and vegetables were literally swimming in a soy sauce concoction. The veggies were mushy; and the salmon was overcooked and dry, leaving the impression of previously cooked food that was reheated. The "fried rice" tasted like steamed rice with soy and frozen peas and carrots added.
Our server seemed earnest but not well trained. The overall impression was chaos drenched in soy sauce.

One of the largest sushi selections I've seen outside the West Coast. Many varieties and very fresh. Also a selection of Bento Boxes, Teriyaki and tempura.
