Delicious from start to finish. Everything is fresh and tasty. Free soup to begin with which was fabulous. The service is amazing and I love that the owner Gemma comes to every table and treats you like her family. Unlike the other restaurants she has kept her prices relevant and doesn’t over charge on everything.

Do not live nearby and hadn't been in too many years but our meal was even better than remembered ! Service prompt and cordial, prices and portions excellent, food quality very good. Decor is homey and lighting good. A neighborhood hangout with lively (mostly male) bar crowd. Potato Leek soup is included with your meal served with excellent rolls. Recommend veal in sherry sauce with sausage and peppers, shrimp ajillo, clams in green sauce. Tried the bacalao croquettes, good but a little light on the salt cod flavor for my taste.

Service at Casa Vasca was both friendly and impeccable. Similar to some of the other Ironbound restaurants we have sampled, service is old world European. Dinner entrees were served with the soup of day which was a very good Chickpea and vegetable. We ordered the salmon stuffed with crabmeat, bronzino and grilled lamb chops. Everything was very good and a fairly large portion. The lamb chops were very reasonable at $22.00. We finished it off with a very good cappuccino and two desserts.
We did not order drinks but the restaurant has a full bar.
We had a very pleasant dinner at Casa Vasca and we would definitely go back

The fried calamari wasn’t good, the batter was too soft. Couldn’t taste the crab meat in the stuffed mushrooms, they were bland. The Garlic Chicken was too garlicky to the point where it was bitter and it was expensive compared to the serving that you received.

Considering that the establishment is located in a residential area and parking is of high priority, one of the positive aspects of our dining experience was that they have "FREE PARKING" half a block away. The other positive aspect is that they have a very attentive and professional team addressing all of your dinning concerns.
With this being our first time, we were not familiar with the set up. You walk into a crowded bar seen. No hostess or anyone available to sign you in, we didn't even know if we were in the right place. We noticed a sign above a door indicating that the restaurant was beyond these doors. If your table was not available, you had to stand and wait in this crowded bar area.
Once seated the team of servers were great. Now the food.... We were patrons for 20 plus years of the restaurant SPAIN which unfortunately shuttered its door several years ago. Sadly, Casa Vasca is no Spain. The food was of good quality, plentiful and of average flavor.
The restaurant was busy, there was a constant flow of clients which means that they must be successful, and their cuisine must be in high demand. Unfortunately, we're not one of those clients.

I love the Casa Vasca, and have been a customer for many years.
The original owners were from Basque and Galicia, and the menu
reflects this.
There is also free parking (please give a tip), but this time we walked from
Newark Penn Station, and did some Portuguese shopping in the neighborhood.
There are a few tables outdoors and we chose this option.
The portions are huge, and you can expect rich sauces. Also the restaurant is famous for including soup of the day, which literally changes every day from among many Spanish soup choices.
I am only giving 3 stars however, as the things we ordered were not perfect.
Lovely sauces, and fresh crusty bread to enjoy it with,
The veal and fish were bland and seem like they were just thrown in the wonderful sauces. This was done without seasoning first, or marinating, or cooking them in the sauce long enough for the flavors to penetrate. Also we got a different veal than we ordered, but no worries.
The monkfish included tough small pieces from the end of the tail.
The pickled anchovies (boquerones) were vinegar heavy, and garnished with finely chopped hard boiled eggs, which did not go well at all. I had this item (which is not on the menu), several times before, and it was much better before, even amazing.
My wife does not like most raw fish, but she loved these.
I wonder if the main chef was there that day, or if something has changed during the pandemic.
Still it was an enjoyable lunch, and our first restaurant lunch since the pandemic.
There is a quite unique menu, and it is definitely still worth a try, especially if for the first time.

Charming restaurant somewhat hidden away in the Ironbound section of Newark. Their parking lot around the corner makes the visit especially easy.
The restaurant is somewhat small and feels more like someone's home than a public eatery.
It is clean and fresh with tablecloths and appealing art work. The wait staff is professional and friendly and the portions are quite generous. Prices are very acceptable.
The food is good but not great: my arroz con pollo was too dry, my husband's veal was overcooked and our friend's goat was a bit gamey tasting. That said there are a wide range of choices on the menu so we will try other dishes on returning. And we will return.

When the owner/chef comes out of the kitchen, greeting you with a smile to check on things.... you’ve found a gem.
The food is fantastic! They started the table with the soup of the day—most delish. Then we had clams in green sauce, sausage, fried squid and a garlic paprika shrimp as starters. All absolutely wonderful.
The entrees were all very healthy portions and we left the restaurant with a smile, a fully belly and looking forward to the next time.
Definitely worth the trip. The waiter was unique and did make good recommendations for us.
Also, they have a private parking lot specifically for the restaurant.

“Neighborhood” restaurant with modest decor, but excellent food and service—and nicely sized portions. Monkfish, marisco (fish stew with lobster), kidney stew—the three of us enjoyed dinner immensely. We dined there on a Wednesday. I thought the restaurant would be almost empty. I’m happy I made a reservation since most of the tables were taken. The restaurant has a parking lot.

Let me start off by saying I live in NJ and have been to practically every restaurant in the Ironbound, We came to the restaurant very excited to eat paella and drink sangria in celebration of my birthday. What a disappointment! The sangria obviously was lacking ingredients such as brandy and triple sec and had barely any fruit. The soup they serve as an appetizer was ok but it was pea soup and I have had much better. But the paella was the blandest, most tasteless paella I have ever had in my life. It was obviously cooked without a single seasoning, including salt! I had to add sauce from my friend’s mariscada to be able to eat any of it. The peas were hard and undercooked too, but thankfully there weren’t too many.
Intererestingly enough, the owner comes around and asked if we were satisfied and when I explained why I wasn’t, she immediately began to chastise and berate me for not having said anything earlier. I told her that we were there with young children and it would have taken too long for a replacement meal. More yelling at me. When I said it was my birthday and I preferred not to deal with the drama, she brought out the dessert we ordered, sang-yelled Happy Birthday and left. I had the flan and the kids had chocolate mousse cake....all tasted store bought.
I will not ever return to this restaurant.... there are many restaurants of higher quality in the area, especially Fornos, which is amazing.

Locator that iron bound district of Newark, just a Stone's throw away from Penn station. This is an under look gem one of the very best restaurants around. Absolutely love coming here. They're known for their paella Many outstanding dishes always look forward to coming here. Everything was cooked perfectly compares favorably to any New York restaurant.

Missing Europe, we traveled to Casa Vasca for cuisine drawn from Spain, Portugal and Basque Country. We were not disappointed. Excellent service by suited waiters, presided over by the mistress of the house. White tablecloths crowned by fresh floral arrangements. We started with the soup that comes with all entrees, an excellent lentil. Then baked clams, with whole clams rather than clam-flavored bread crumbs. My husband had seafood in green sauce and was astonished to receive lobster featured prominently in the mix. I had crab-stuffed flounder. We drank glasses of Albariño wine from Spain and Portuguese vinho verde. Leave room for the house dessert — flan, orange cake and vanilla ice cream. Excellent value — the same meal in NYC would have been 50% higher or more. And free parking! We look forward to returning soon.

This Spanish/Basque restaurant is in the Ironbound district but not on Ferry Street. That may make it more of a destinations for locals; I did get to speak Spanish with some men, born in Galicia, eating at the bar. All entrees come with a thick, hearty vegetable soup. My main course was mariscados (seafood) in a light green sauce. My husband had a tender veal stew with pasta. They have a liquor license and many guests were sipping sangria. Service was attentive but not hurried. Prices very reasonable. We will return.

As always food was superb but because of pandemic not willing to go inside. I ordered our meal and requested a time for pick-up. I called when I was outside restaurant; food was delivered to the trunk of my car. Voila! Contactless. Arrived home, meal was still warm. Delicious 'caldo gallego' (typical from Spain) which is complimentary. Ordered: Chicken & shrimp in wine sauce and the other meal, Whiting & shrimp in sherry sauce. Included bowl of rice, spanish chips and delicious warm rolls. Yummy leftovers. Dinner tomorrow. We will be back!!

Casa Vasca has some of the finest Basque/Spanish dining in the Newark Metro.
Service is excellent and Doña MarĂa is an excellent hostess that makes you feel like family on every visit.
From wine to seafood, to paella all accompanied with fresh bread and a welcoming manner.
Make Casa Vasca your choice for a family outing or dinner for two. The food and service are always impeccable.
