Birthday celebration with family. My wife insisted on returning based on a pleasant experience on our previous two visits. Since it was a somewhat large group, we asked to sit in the rear of the restaurant. Service attentive, food a delight, and cocktails on the...mark. Head chief came out, introduced himself and inquired whether we were satisfied. Very nice touch. And to top it off, since it was a BD celebration, they brought out complementary deserts. Wow! If not aware, parking lot is in the rear. Afterwards stroll along the main Street towards the river.More

By odd, I mean the service. Friendly, attentive but way too low key. (I felt like the kitchen staff was manning the restaurant.) Not outgoing or friendly like you would expect - acceptable. The food was okay. I got a HUGE filet mignon. I asked...for as rare as possible but there wasn’t even a sear that I could see on it. I like steak tartare and beef carpaccio but I’ve never had a filet this rare in NJ. Maybe PA - they’re rebellious on that side of the river. And it was huge! Like a 6 inch tenderloin. I took half home and will remove the peppercorn sauce and sear for later. Just odd. My companion had a burger. Also, ultra-rare. I’ll go back for another try the next time I’m in Frenchtown. It could have been an off day.More

The innkeeper could do wonders to this historic property with a few rather minor adjustments. The front door with a prominent sign, "Entrance" was locked, with no indication the door to the right is actually the entrance to the front desk lobby. My room was...clean and comfortable for two nights. Housekeeping did a fine job. The downside was the room was dark, with just two low watt bedside lamps. Even if they aren't serving breakfast, coffee and tea should be available, if only in the lobby. Most concerning, and what left a sour taste in my mouth was the female bartender in the "Rathskeller." I don't appreciate hearing the f-bomb, and she used it freely. The innkeeper could also get out the paint and pick up a brush.More

Was really looking forward to meeting with friends and eating a good lunch. Sadly, the food was lacking. Butter chicken had a watery sauce and dried up rice, obviously reheated. Ordered lentil pasta special - was brought regular pasta which as a gluten intolerant was...not ok and also served with ground beef sauce - I don’t eat beef. Ordered coffee press, it was stone cold. Asked for a hot press replacement, coffee was bitter and disgusting. We sat outside as the rooms were dark and gloomy. Would not recommend.More

This precious neighborhood gem is a great place to eat. We had a choice to eat on the front porch, backyard seating with umbrellas, cozy bar seating, or a relaxed, lovely dining room. We chose to seat at the bar. I scanned the extensive menu...which is very creative with new ideas for lunch and dinner- and realized I would order anything on the menu and enjoy it! That is usually not the case, but everything sounded so delicious. We started with the Mediterranean Plate of hummus, feta and artichoke dip, and baba ganoush app to share, as well as the tuna tartare with a side salad- with the best sesame-soy dressing by the way! I had the duck confit roll up which was devine that had a phenomenal peking duck sauce, and my husband had the Argentinian Milanese chicken with shallots and capers. I love sauces- they always enhance a dish, so although the chicken was incredibly tender and delicious, perhaps a light sauce to go with the chicken would enhance the flavor even more. And if that is my only suggestion for this place, I would say it is worth a 6 star review! The owner Pete is passionate about his restaurant and hotel, and it shows. He is a hands-on owner, doing everything that needs to be done to give seamless service. This precious hotel and restaurant is worth trying out for sure. Bravo to this "little engine that could" that survived Covid, hung in there, and are there now for us all to enjoy.More

I was traveling to a wedding in Doylestown, PA yesterday and found myself with a couple of hours spare time. I happened upon this establishment on the way and decided to spend the warm afternoon sipping on a cold beer, The whole place is like...stepping back in time, the bar so cozy and delightfully appointed in hand carved wood. Bartenders friendly and professional...helpful in providing the history of the hotel and the surrounding area. Had a couple of pints of the Faith ale which was just the right temperature and delicious. After such a nice experience, I am planning to take my wife here for an overnite stay in September for her birthday. Can't wait to do dinner here at that time and explore the lovely, quaint Frenchtown further at that time. Good job to all at this historic property.More

I wanted something different to celebrate my wife's birthday dinner. Old country charm. This was the place. As you walk in you will see a few tables on the porch area. Once inside you will see a flight of stairs. To the right the hotel...portion of the building. Small well appointed lounge area with check-in. To the left a wonderful bar lounge. The bar was what it seemed to be mahogany with at least 20 seats. Opposite the bar were four round table that can accompany four patrons. At the rear of the lounge is the dinning area. We sat in the bar area. Our choice. Parking by the way is in the rear or you can park on the Street. Everything from the atmosphere, the wait staff, the quality of the food, and the cocktails were as mentioned excellent! No rush. We stayed for 3 hours. Ordered cocktails and appetizers', then entrée. We have been to Frenchtown many many times but this was the first to partake at the establishment. As MacArthur said "we will return"More

This was our first time eating out since the pandemic. We had a table on the porch and felt completely safe. The staff was extremely friendly and our server was very efficient. Frenchtown, NJ is a very small town to begin with and there are only a handful of restaurants. We had been warned by locals to skip the National but it was within walking distance of where we were staying, so geography won. What a mistake!...I ordered the Tapas for Two. The meats were tough and the tapas that were supposed to be warm were cold. It was supposed to be Tapas for “two” but some tapas were only for one person. I ordered the Butternut Squash and Apple soup. It was cold and gross. I then had a salad and asked for dressing on the side. That didn’t happen, as the salad was drenched in dressing to the point that it was dripping off the lettuce. We then ordered dessert, which I thought would be hard to mess up. Hindsight is 20/20. Both desserts were hard as rocks and cold. I needed to use my elbow to cut into my raspberry tart. The waiter was great though! I would not recommend this place for food. It is a good place to stop in for a drink at the bar and nothing more.More

I remembered this place as being sort of a throw-back to the old coaching house places. I took friends from NYC, I was there early and took a back table in the bar...mistake !...it was next to the lavatories. We moved to the front of...the restaurant. Speaking of which...I used the mens room...it was a disgrace...broken toilet roll holder...messy floor, unrefurbished for years. The food was unremarkable and the furnishings in the bar looked NOTHING like the present day decor. Service was "okay" and drinks looked suspiciously watered-down. I was tempted to move to the Frenchtown Inn, around the corner. Next time I'll bypass The National...much better options in the areaMore

We stayed this weekend for a wedding in town. Spacious room, friendly accommodating staff, June was fantastic! Beds were very comfortable. The upstairs bar and restaurant was a pleasant step back in time decor with a modern flair menu. The National Burger was perfect! We...really enjoyed our stay and I was proud to find such a lovely place in NJ. The entire town was delightful and my girls felt like they were in a Hallmark episode. Please make saltine crackers an accoutrement to your oyster presentation. Many folks eat their oysters on a cracker with cocktail sauce and extra horseradish unless they are at an oyster bar and the oysters are shucked in front of the patron. It's like serving New England Clam chowder without oyster crackers. And the bar staff should know exactly where the oysters are harvested. It makes the experience more enjoyable.More

There is parking on 2nd street behind the National. There is also a public lot next to the gas station across the street and another public lot about 1 block away up route 12 next to the small convenience store.
