This was our first time eating out since the pandemic. We had a table on the porch and felt completely safe. The staff was extremely friendly and our server was very efficient. I had the chicken korbo with extra spinach instead of the rice and...it was very flavorful. My husband had the fish and chips and loved them. A very pleasant dinner for our first venture out.More

Frenchtown, NJ is a very small town to begin with and there are only a handful of restaurants. We had been warned by locals to skip the National but it was within walking distance of where we were staying, so geography won. What a mistake!...I ordered the Tapas for Two. The meats were tough and the tapas that were supposed to be warm were cold. It was supposed to be Tapas for “two” but some tapas were only for one person. I ordered the Butternut Squash and Apple soup. It was cold and gross. I then had a salad and asked for dressing on the side. That didn’t happen, as the salad was drenched in dressing to the point that it was dripping off the lettuce. We then ordered dessert, which I thought would be hard to mess up. Hindsight is 20/20. Both desserts were hard as rocks and cold. I needed to use my elbow to cut into my raspberry tart. The waiter was great though! I would not recommend this place for food. It is a good place to stop in for a drink at the bar and nothing more.More

I remembered this place as being sort of a throw-back to the old coaching house places. I took friends from NYC, I was there early and took a back table in the bar...mistake !...it was next to the lavatories. We moved to the front of...the restaurant. Speaking of which...I used the mens room...it was a disgrace...broken toilet roll holder...messy floor, unrefurbished for years. The food was unremarkable and the furnishings in the bar looked NOTHING like the present day decor. Service was "okay" and drinks looked suspiciously watered-down. I was tempted to move to the Frenchtown Inn, around the corner. Next time I'll bypass The National...much better options in the areaMore

We stayed this weekend for a wedding in town. Spacious room, friendly accommodating staff, June was fantastic! Beds were very comfortable. The upstairs bar and restaurant was a pleasant step back in time decor with a modern flair menu. The National Burger was perfect! We...really enjoyed our stay and I was proud to find such a lovely place in NJ. The entire town was delightful and my girls felt like they were in a Hallmark episode. Please make saltine crackers an accoutrement to your oyster presentation. Many folks eat their oysters on a cracker with cocktail sauce and extra horseradish unless they are at an oyster bar and the oysters are shucked in front of the patron. It's like serving New England Clam chowder without oyster crackers. And the bar staff should know exactly where the oysters are harvested. It makes the experience more enjoyable.More

As the title goes, Middle Eastern flavors and menu items occupy a tad too much of the menu to make regular visitors out of us home-towners. We too quickly run out of variations, so we're relegated to salads and over-the-top fish 'n chips, to die...for. We've had fish 'n chips everywhere, but until we had them at the National, we didn't know what we were missing. These are not tempura; they're not ordinary, and they're not just light, crispy and sweet. These fish 'n chips are to drive for. By the way, so is the key lime pie - excellent!More

First of all, the building itself is a wonderfully historic part of the town. The charm simply cannot be denied. We had drinks on the porch since the weather was beautiful . Management and staff were all very nice and accommodating. When the 4 of...us were together we chose a table for dinner in the bar area. Original tin ceilings and a gorgeous old bar set the scene. Two of us had a halibut special with couscous in a lemon beurre blanc and it was very well cooked and perfectly seasoned. Others had a lobster/shrimp roll and a hamburger. All enjoyed. Wines by the glass - a nice enough selection. Seasonal fruit crisp with ice cream for dessert was served warm. I look forward to returning soon.More

Our 12-person family group came together hurriedly, and I needed to find a place in Frenchtown to accommodate ages 12 through 94 on a Saturday night. The National came through with flying colors. Although not handicapped accessible, we did get our 94-year-old into the dining...room where a long table awaited us, all set and inviting. Service came quickly, and the varied menu had something for everyone. Favorite meals included the lemon butter monkfish and the cuttlefish ink pasta special. From my initial call to our final goodbyes, the National staff was helpful, accommodating, , friendly, and professional. We will return next time we are in Frenchtown.More

For food and drink...this place is an absolute gem. Not only does the menu constantly change with fresh ideas, the offerings are always delish and fresh. The drinks...really...not like anywhere else. Mike is the best bartender ever...both with his concoctions and friendliness. Just tell him...what flavor your in the mood for, and he will make it like nothing you ever tasted.More

There is parking on 2nd street behind the National. There is also a public lot next to the gas station across the street and another public lot about 1 block away up route 12 next to the small convenience store.
