About
WHERE COMFORT MEETS CRAFT. Grain & Cane is your home for hospitality in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. An homage to family nostalgia, our neighborhood table is built on the Connell legacy, as leading American rice and sugar cane purveyors and community idealists. Our menu features dishes that nod to family tradition, regional flare, and vibrant flavors, such as fresh oysters on the half shell, sourdough pizzas, and our custom-grind burger. Strong roots and dynamic character serve as the blueprint for a thoughtful selection of craft beers, wine, and cocktails. Vintage art and antique photographs from past Connell generations set a backdrop for a convivial atmosphere – a restaurant and bar ideal for a range of experiences, from casual occasions to magnetic celebrations.

We had an very positive experience during lunch at Crain & Cane and would recommend it.
Our table of ten was accommodated in the outdoor area to the left of the restaurant's entrance. Although we were ostensibly sitting adjacent to the hotel entrance, it seemed private, and we felt comfortable enjoying ourselves without fear of bothering other patrons.
The service was adequately attentive, and the menu was broad enough to satisfy our large group, which ranged in ages, from 24 to 68. The offerings included margherita pizza, rigatoni bolognese, lobster cobb salad, fried chicken sandwich, grilled Scottish salmon, steak frites and s'mores in a mason jar.
If you're looking for a solid, and even creative, meal in this area--go to Cane & Grain.

With huge ceilings inside and a large bar, high-top tables as well as benches and regular seating this restaurant has an energy to it you feel right away upon entering through their huge doors.
There's also a nice patio with fire pits and pleasant seating (though you do look out at the parking lot, it's higher and so does not affect one's hearing or smelling).
We had the G&C Wedge at $27.00 which is comprised of 2 wedges of lettuce with a blue cheese dressing and an 8oz flank steak cooked perfectly and w a slightly sweet demi glaze. We wanted the Steak Frites but at 14oz and $46.00 would have been a waste of money. So under the Appetizers and Salads section we found this gem and it was of perfect proportions. Our Server (also filling in as as bartender) was Estela who was always keeping an eye out for us while she performed bar duties and was quick to help out anytime we needed something. We had the White Sangria. Highly recommended and refreshing.
We were here 3 years ago and were also delighted with dinner. The only issue is that because of the size of the dining room and the vaulted ceiling the noise level is not conducive to intimate conversations.

Kids back from college and they picked grain and cane. Sat at bar tables to get the Duck Poutine. It was delicious!! Boys and shared the Tomahawk Ribeye - spiced perfectly - perfect medium rare - outstanding evening. Highly recommend. Note rib eye does take time to cook so either order it early or sit back and relax.

We went to Grain & Cane today for brunch to celebrate our son's birthday. The atmosphere is lovely, and we wanted to love this place in hopes of making it a regular spot to get together. When we arrived, there were only a few other tables occupied. We soon placed our orders and waited over coffee for our food to arrive. The problems with service soon became apparent when our server was nowhere to be found when some of us were ready for more coffee. One of us had to go in search of the server to ask him for refills. Then our food arrived in dribs and drabs, and my grandson's order of pancakes did not arrive at all. We again had to find the server to ask what happened; he had mistakenly not put in the order for the pancakes. Also, there was no cheese in my omelet, so he took it away and by the time he returned, everyone, except my grandson, was almost finished with their meals. My grandson still had not received his pancakes! My son went in search of the server to find out where the pancakes were, but he came across the manager instead, who said they would be right out (and he said we wouldn't be charged for them). When they finally arrived, they were undercooked. Furthermore, some of the other meals were cold, In fact, the cheese in my son's omelet hadn't even melted. We certainly enjoyed our time together, but Grain & Cane was a disappointment. Not sure why service was so poor since the restaurant was not crowded by any means. And, although it seems to be the kind of place we would like to frequent, not sure we would want to chance another experience with poor service. I first posted this review on the restaurant's Facebook page. I expected, at least, a response from a manager....but got crickets. I would imagine the problem begins with the management. It's a shame because the restaurant has so much potential.

As the old saying goes - never judge a book by its cover. Such is the case with Grain & Cane. Great decor and I had high hopes but they were dashed quickly. The service and food are lousy! First, it was 5:00 and they tried to seat me in the bar and I told them I’d prefer to not sit in the bar, and I could immediately tell the girl was annoyed. I heard her say she had to check reservations. Seriously? For one person at 5:00!
Secondly, I asked my waiter for a club soda and lime. He then asked me three times if I wanted water. Thirdly, I ordered New England clam chowder. NJ folk don’t know $h!+ about New England clam chowder because what I had sucked. It was basically a cream sauce with some potatoes. I must have missed the clams.
Finally, the Caesar with salmon was average at best. $8.00 extra for a piece of salmon that was not even the size of a hockey puck. The only reason I didn’t give 1 star is because the decor was nice. Other than that, I will never come back here.

We have eaten here a number of times and the food and services have always been consistent. We’ve never had a bad meal nor bad service. The biggest annoyance is that they tend to add extra unnecessary items to really great food that tend to not mix well and actually create confusion. In cooking many times less is more and simplicity is key. It’s fun that they have a seasonal menu.

Wanted to check this out during lunch - in order to reserve this for a wedding after party next year. Overall, the food quality was good - Asian Chicken Salad - looks like the place, as is the case with other restaurants, is slowly trying to get back to normal. Experience was positive. Nice outdoor setting during the summer months.

Great atmosphere. Kids love reading the train tracks
Food was very good. Everything from Cobb salad to pork to burgers to onion soup.
Only issue is it takes too long to get dinner.

Friendly greeting and prompt seating with a special need guest. Our waiter was attentive. The small bar had some decent choices. The food was ok, nothing unusual but the food was hot and fresh. Rather small lunch menu. Overall pretty good.

My rule is, "Don't eat where people sleep." Hotel restaurants rarely deliver an experience. [The old 'captive audience' thing..] This one certainly has a more pleasant, interesting décor than your usual hotel restaurant. And service was good. But the food was very average. Good, but nothing to get excited about. And, of course, prices a bit higher than you can get elsewhere.

Don't let the photos fool you...this place was sub-par at best. I had the turkey club and could've made it at home for much cheaper...the fries were over-done....nah, won't go back.

We went there for drinks with friends. The place was very nice and the waitress Estela was very friendly and commodating: she made us authentic and delicious brazilian caipirinhas (off the menu, but should be in the menu). Definitely worth a visit!

Our son lives 8 minutes away from this restaurant. He liked it so much from one visit, he wanted us to try it with him for their brunch.
The French Toast is among the best I've had anywhere. They had a potato dish served in small iron fry pan that was outrageous too with peppers and onions - so moist and tender and flavorful.
I ordered the turkey club and salad which were good. The house dressing was good.
The hostess is especially pleasant and genuine. I was a restaurant hostess once, and she was tops. Our server was lovely, too.
We liked the decor and ambience. We had a one-year-old and he was happy there. You can take children if they are well-behaved. We walked in the adjoining Hilton with him where there is a fun water display with pipes spewing out water which are fun to watch. There's also one of the nicest, roomy Starbucks adjacent to the lobby where you can be with the kids while you wait for your meal if you need to just walk around with little ones before the food arrives. Our food arrived quickly.
We will definitely be returning soon.

This place has everything! We were happy to stumble upon it on our way to a hiking trail nearby. Stopped in for Sunday brunch and was blown away by the quality of our meal. Great place!
