First rate local café/bakery

The coffee and pastries are good, but I prefer other nearby coffee spots for cappuccinos and baked goods. It's a cozy atmosphere, with colorful art and nice seating areas, and the outdoor patio is a big draw in good weather. I've become a little jaded with this place, though. It's nice, but it's gotten way too touristy. There are cafes... More

Location, location, location - that's pretty much all it's got. All the Coffees have a the distinct cardboard flavoring of the filters they're made with. Really AWESOME coffee is Cafe Kilim, you just have to walk a few minutes more to get there.

Breaking New Grounds Market Square Portland, has great coffee and delicious muffins, pastries and bakery treats. The interior is warm and welcoming and although it is busy and bustling with people service is good and the wait is short. There are seats and tables outside sitting on the Square where you can people watch.

Breaking New Grounds has been around for over twenty years. Sometimes you can still catch Matt, the owner, roasting the beans himself and making all of downtown smell like coffee. The quality has remained steady in their 2+ decades and you can always count on BNG for a great cup of coffee. Their patio is the best place to people... More

We stopped here while visiting Portsmouth to grab a cup of coffee in the afternoon before heading home. While the place was bustling with activity, the line moved quickly and we were welcomed with a big smile. The coffee was excellent! It may have been the best almond latte I've ever had. Delicious! Highly recommended!

We stopped here for coffee twice on our visit to Portsmouth - we're coffee addicts. Both times, the place was busy but the line moves quickly (so quickly I almost didn't have time to read the menu, which has lots of great options). I tried the chocolate chip coconut scone, it was great! Looking forward to stopping in again in... More

Final morning needed a small breakfast fix but didn't want to sit and wait at a restaurant . Spotted this place the day before across from the north church, aromas of rich coffee filled the air. Headed here the next morning and looked at different varieties of pastries ranging from bagels to stuffed croissants. Ordered a few with a mocha... More

This was my favorite daily stop while visiting Portsmouth. The coffee was good and so were the pastries. The shortbread cookies were good but the chocolate torte was very rich I could barely finish one bite. The butter cake was good too. The outdoor seating is great to relax and people watch.
