Everything was good just not delicious. We had a great waitress. The building itself was very unique I loved it. If only the walls could talk.

It's a nice atmosphere in this place. The food is just totally overprized. Thin slivers of cheese, hardly enough for a mouthful are sold as a cheese platter. Prawns are three lost little prawnlets. So as long as you're not hungry and you go for the atmosphere, you're ok.

Very charming setting - brick wall, candlelight etc. Food is outstanding, but it is unusual and interesting .. no plain stuff here. We loved it! Even our buddy who likes boring food found that interesting can be wonderful

The few negative reviews for this restaurant are 100% wrong ! The atmosphere is fun, intimate and sophisticated without being uptight ! Now , the food : everything we ordered was perfect. Yes, portions are small-ish but totally satisfying . More European style . The Haddock was the best prepared fish I have ever eaten. The paella perfectly seasoned .... More

Booked this as our 1 night restaurant before moving on, on our travels. Very good deletion of wines , to many European, I've French for my choice, and a greater wine by the glass would be nicer, but selection is good, and some very nice beers , including nice craft beers. But now to the food, we shared a meze... More

The restaurant is darling, tucked down a side street in a brick building. Romantic and cozy inside. We really enjoyed our meal--eggplant fries as a starter, I had perogi with roasted beets, and my husband had hangar steak. The menu has some unique dishes and combinations, which we enjoyed. Good drinks and wine. Service was good, not great. I was... More

Out-of-towners might like to know that many locals frequent the Black Trumpet for a fine dining experience. Whenever "kids" come home or friends and colleagues arrive from out of state, we plan for an evening together at the Black Trumpet. The locally sourced menu changes often and cocktails are just right. Chef Evan Mallett was named as a James Beard... More

Had a really nice dinner here and really enjoyed the experience. The restaurant is tucked down a side street so you probably wouldn't see it if you were wandering through the main streets. The interior had some cool touches like brick walls, mirrors, and custom made shelves for wine with chalkboard labels. The menu is creative and had a lot... More

Another restaurant with a great reputation and dreadful service. Sadly the food was also mediocre. Sub standard service and mediocre food do not make for a good dining experience, especially since it was quite expensive and we had been really looking forward to it. Even the wine was disappointing, but worst of all was the poor and rude service. Last... More

Tucked away down an interesting street is a restaurant that you could easily miss, but I am here to tell you that you should not! The space is cozy and interesting and the food is utterly delicious. My husband and I had come to Portsmouth for a quick get away and chose Black Trumpet Bistro for a dinner without knowing... More
