I was happy to learn that this restaurant, located 3 blocks from my home, was offering takeout, presumably to survive during the coronavirus pandemic. I've been a sit-down diner there a few times and enjoyed the food. This weekend, I ordered two meals for pickup...in three hours, adding a generous tip. When I arrived at the restaurant, the none-too-friendly front-of-house staff told me the meals weren't ready, but that someone was "getting them now." Five minutes went by; then ten minutes of being ignored by the staff. No one said "I'm sorry for the wait," or "It will just be another few minutes"--nothing. At 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. In a perfectly normal tone of voice, I explained the situation and asked what was happening with my meals. The manager (who I believe is also the owner) said, "they're on the table right behind you" (where takeout orders were waiting for pickup). I have no idea why he said that (having no information), and I pointed out that the staff was unable to locate the meals. The manager responded by saying he wasn't "going to do this here" and asking me to "step outside." I should point out that I'm a middle-aged female who was merely registering a complaint; I didn't raise my voice or say anything insulting, I just kept asking where my pre-paid dinners were and receiving no answer. The next thing I know, the manager was threatening to call the police. Finally one of the staff admitted that the order had been lost and that my meals hadn't been cooked, but could be ready "in a few minutes." I replied that all I wanted was my money back. The manager said I hadn't been charged yet (though that remains to be seen), so I said "fine" and left. I am just dumbfounded by the whole episode. In what universe does a manager think that a legitimate complaint about service is so menacing that he needs to kick a patron off his premises and call the police? My only consolation is that my neighbors are going to hear about this and that the place will lose revenue as a result. They've certainly lost the few hundred dollars I probably would have spent here over the next few months. Unbelievable!More

Great evening had by all. The food was outstanding. We had several appetizers and enjoyed each but the duck confit crepes were definitely the star of the show! Kudos to chef Ben on all of our meals. The waitstaff was accommodating and met our every...need. Steak, lamb and seafood cooked to perfection. The desserts were also outstanding. Highly recommend the Bananas Foster cake, delicious. 6 people for dinner and a few drinks. Let me start by saying the the ambiance was perfect and the server was outstanding. The appetizers were sparse and undelectable. The Chartrucerie board contained a few slices of italian meats with 3 triangular pieces of cheese...and several slices of some burnt toast, with a few other unmemorable additions. I chose the "special squash dish" that evening which came out of the kitchen to my table looking quite lovely, however, the taste of this dish was of a few sauteed vegetables over a large brick of sweetbread, simply unpaletable. 6/6 were disappointed with their dishes. I left $475 short and scratching my headMore

On-site parking, friendly greeting at the door, your coats hung up for you. Now that you're here take note of greenery and white lights. Wait until you meet your server. We feel lucky to have met Carmen. The chef creates very eye catching and tasty...meals. My brother has already returned. It's the best Portsmouth restaurant since the Blue Strawbery. (Only one r). Loved it.More

The restaurant gets 5 stars for ambience; however, the food ranged from terrible (overdone and tiny pieces of beef that were supposed to be steak tips) to very good, but was too inconsistent for our taste and on the pricey side. We also had a...server who rarely smiled and didn’t seem too interested in making our experience pleasant. Would not recommend or return.More

We have lived in the area for awhile and have always heard this was a go to place. Our daughter had bought us a gift certificate and as she was visiting from out of town we thought Mombo would be a good place to go...- too bad it was a disappointment. They said they had a large party, but if I am paying the same price as any other night my service and food quality should be the same regardless - so...Wings and Things -very good but a little overpriced. Salt and Vinegar potatoes - where was the flavor? Pork chop - everything about this was dry, dry stuffing, dry meat, dry topping. Crispy Salmon - ok, but in relation to other dishes the size of the salmon was small, but the sorba noddles were great. Lamb Osso Bucco - the the taste of the lamb was a little too strong for my liking, but that is a personal preference. The sauce was was marginal at best - where were the mushrooms and rich flavored sauce, there was a sauce but not as flavorable as I would except. The bigger disapointment was the rissotto which was more like a warm grain salad and not not very good. It was not until we were in the car and became honest with each other that it was agreed that it was not a good meal that the service was so so, but the restaurant was a very nice space, I would say that if they want locals to go back they need to step it up, with wine it was a wasted $180.More

We arrived at 6:15 and sat the bar. It was at least 15 minutes before we were even acknowledged by the bartender. We ordered 2 drinks and an appetizer and said we'd be eating dinner. We ordered our entrees and a bottle of wine. We...got the wine and at 7:40 NO dinner, no bread and no water. We enquired and were told our meals weren't ordered and it would be 15 minutes before they came. We had explained from the BEGINNING that we needed to leave at 7:50 for a play at Seacoast Rep. So...unless we wanted to eat in 5 minutes we had to cancel our dinner and leave. There was no apology and no consideration. We are NOT tourists.. we are local. VERY disappointing and we won't be back and don't recommend!More

I made reservations for a birthday dinner at Mombo based on the reviews and the menu. This is one of the best meals that I have had from start to finish. The restaurant has free valet parking for dinner guests. It is right next to...Prescott Park, so you can hear the music from the concerts if you dine outside. There is a small covered area for dining outside at the entry and seating on the porch. We were greeted by Tom the owner and he had a beautiful table for us at the front with bay window bench seating. The food was outstanding and creative and priced between $22-36. If we were in Boston the prices would be in the $36-48 range for the quality and care taken for each plate. We had the cheese plate to start which was enough for 4 of us with four different cheese, relishes and crackers. It was delicious. The wine prices were reasonable. We had a bottle of Freemark Abbey Cabernet which retails for ~$50 for $89. Not a bad mark up at a restaurant. Garrett was our waiter and he was attentive during the evening. They change cutlery between courses. Their dinnerware and glasses are high quality. They served us complimentary fresh French baguette and corn bread with homemade butter and olive oil. Tom came over to the table to make sure we didn’t need anything else during the evening. The inside of the restaurant is post and beam building with high ceiling providing a real New England ambiance. I would dine there again without question.More
