My husband, son and I visited Barley & Salt on a Saturday night after a somewhat full day of shopping at Settler's Green. We have been coming to North Conway for years and have said there needs to be better dining other than all the fast food establishments they have there. With it's large brick exterior, it's hard to miss Barley & Salt and the lit wreaths on display outside gave it a warm feeling. We had a 30 minute wait which wasn't bad, given a Saturday and it was a friends shopping event going on in the area. I noticed several NH license plates as well as out of state ones which is always a good sign. They foyer is small, though, and given current COVID restrictions, only 1 party is allowed in the actual restaurant to provide their name for the waitlist, so the front door got very crowded. And not everyone was taught to be courteous. : / Hubby put in our name and immediately got a text stating our approximate wait time. Surely, 25 or so minutes later, we got another text stating our table was ready. Tables were pub style and quite comfortable. The menu was a nice array of starters, salads, "hand helds" as they called them, full entrees and even a few desserts. My husband enjoyed the draft choices they had (over 30, I believe). We started with homemade chips and caramelized onion dip. Delicious! We saw pretzels the size of a dinner plate come out on a hanging rack which the folks at the next table shared. TVs lined the walls but not too many that you feel like you are in a bar. Enough to make it a casual, relaxing feel. I ordered the boneless braised short ribs which were so tender. My husband got the lobster fettuccini and my son the blackened chicken sandwich. The sandwich came with a nice side of mixed greens, though he opted for a side of mashed and I had some of his greens. Everything was fresh and delicious! We were full after our dinner and opted to skip dessert. The bill was $105 for a starter, cider beer, 2 soft drinks, 3 entrees and a side. Not bad considering the options were mostly fast food. We thoroughly enjoyed our first experience there and certainly will be back! I suggest this place for an enjoyable way to end your evening!

I'm glad to hear that the text service was convenient for you. We take our COVID protocols seriously and this allows guests waiting to disperse and not crowd the waiting area. I'm glad you enjoyed our 30+ craft beers on tap (the largest in the area), the value and the atmosphere. Please come again!

After waiting 45 minutes when told it would be 15-20, we finally sat down, ordered a wine and a beer. The pour on the wine was a half glass at best so decided to order a bottle to save money. Mussels with sausage app contained kielbasa ... that's not sausage where we come from. Flavors were beyond weird and the giant pretzel we ordered was cute from a presentation standpoint but very well done. Gnocchi entree was more bizarre flavors, burger with salad was fine. There's a lot of opportunity here, but the night we were there missed the mark entirely.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I'm sorry to hear about the wait - we reduced capacity due to COVID we have seen longer waits than we'd like and it can be difficult at best to predict wait times. But I understand why that would be frustrating. I'm also sorry you did not enjoy your food and the flavors - I'll share your feedback with the kitchen crew.

The ambiance of the restaurant is stunning! But the Food was definitely lacking in flavor. The truffle fries were ok, the Ahi Tuna didnt taste fresh and felt like it was bought from a supermarket. The spicy thai chicken noodle dish was not spicy and barely had flavor. The Halibut which was $30 was very dry as well. The best dish for me was probably the mussels. The host was very hospitable but our server was ok and didnt seem to enjoy serving us.

Super rude hostess. There was a 1 hour wait and when I asked what other restaurants were in the area that were good (we are from out of town) I received a very rude snarky comment. Also while we were waiting to approach the hostess stand the waitstaff was getting very aggravated that people were in their way, meanwhile there were a ton of people waiting and only a small area to wait. The vibe was awful - We will never go back

I'm disappointed to hear about your experience. I am not sure of the date of your visit but given the date of your review, I'm guessing you were here during Feb. Vacation Week, which is peak time here in North Conway. However that's not an excuse for you to be made to feel that way. It can get crowded in our reception area when there is a wait. I will share your feedback with the general manager.

This place has a great vibe and the food was outstanding! We started with the salt and vinegar dry-rubbed wings which were some of the best wings I have EVER had. Like, I wanted to have them again for my main meal and once more for dessert! We also got the Positano mussels which came in a delicious white wine and garlic broth that was perfect for dipping the toasted bread and the mussels were huge with no grit. I got the beat and goat cheese salad with the most delicious, perfectly cooked grilled chicken breast I have ever had on a salad. No sketchy meat, just pure white meat with great flavor. My husband got the rustic salad with grilled chicken and loved his too. I wish we were drinking because they had an awesome selection of beer and an amazing cocktail list. It's the type of place I could belly up to the bar and drink and eat my face off until closing time. So yeah, just go here if you like to eat and drink well!

This is not my first review of Barley and Salt so yesterday's visit was not my first visit. In fact, this used to be my favorite/"go-to" lunch place when visiting Settlers Green (which is quite often). I was excited to introduce a work colleague to the Barley and Salt as I knew he would appreciate the good food and cool vibe. Unfortunately, the music was SO LOUD. I am not a quiet girl myself and I loved the variety of songs they were playing in BUT the volume was SO LOUD! We were having trouble hearing each other across a 4 top in the dining room. I approached the hostess station and requested that the music be turned down "just a touch". I was told that "the owner likes it this way". When I suggested our table might be right under the speakers which was making it uncomfortable, the hostess told me that the ceiling is full of rows of speakers and I might prefer their "more mellow" sister restaurant "Black Cap Grille." I have had many excellent meals at Black Cap Grille (used to love flashing my gold Black Cap frequent diner card) but her comment and tone rubbed me the wrong way. It was as if she expected me to say, "OK, we'll just get back in the car and go there instead but let me pay for my lemonade first." Again ~ I am not a quiet girl and can appreciate good music being played loudly (especially at night in a crowded place) as it enhances the fun ~ but at lunchtime? Anyway ~ my Korean BBQ tacos were a home run as always and I was so happy we tried the fried Brussels Sprouts for the first time ~ they were also a hit for our party of 3. Our server Chrissy took excellent care of us too. Unfortunately, I won't be back and that makes me sad.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the food at Barley & Salt. Our music and our playlist are a feature that attracts guests to our restaurant. I'm sorry that it wasn't to your taste but I stand by the response of the hostess as we can't turn the volume up and down or change the playlist to suit individual preferences.

The salt and vinegar wings, the positano mussels and the salads were delicious. Excellent service, beautiful restaurant with great TVs, and a very good bar set up. Absolutely the best we have had in North Conway in 3 days, so much better than all the older run down places that serve traditional pub food. Don't miss this spot.

We were excited to go and try this place out as we had heard good things, however we felt the restaurant was a bit lacking. Inside, the restaurant has a modern style with good spacing between groups, great for social distancing. Our waitress was just okay, and didn’t seem to pay much attention to what she was touching during this pandemic, but was otherwise fine. We started with buffalo wings, which were delicious. However, they were full wings and uncut, if that matters to you. The Pork Carnitas tacos were visually gorgeous and had fantastic, fresh flavor. The Spicy Thai Noodles, on the other hand, looked great but lacked flavor overall. I would personally go here for lunch again, but would not rush to do so.

We enjoyed an excellent dinner and decided to return a few days later for Lunch. Dinner was excellent, we started with drinks and the Pretzel and enjoyed our meals so much we wanted to return for lunch. We opted for burgers done Medium which arrived a bit undercooked (cool red interior, bleeding onto the bun). We were hungry from hiking and our server was busy so we didn’t send the burgers back to be cooked more but we probably should have because both of us had digestive issues a little while later. The menu has a lot of really good items on it but if you order a burger maybe ask for Medium Well or Well done instead of Medium. Dinner was a 5, lunch was a 4.

First off, thank you for visiting us twice in one trip. We appreciate repeat customers. Regarding the burger being undercooked, I'm sorry it was not prepared to your satisfaction. I will share your feedback with the general manager. However, we do encourage customers to always bring any issues to the attention of your server so we can address it on the spot. Sorry about that.

My family went to eat while celebrating our daughter’s birthday. The host/server was prompt, helpful and friendly. It was a quiet Thursday night. The food was delicious, our server took the time to explain and answer questions politely. He was kind and funny, he took the time to listen to my kids as they spoke. I missed his name but he said his family was from Macedonia. We wanted to try the deserts, as they looked amazing and the couple at the table next to us said they were incredible! We will absolutely revisit and recommend Barley and Salt to our friends!

Let me start by mentioning Barley and Salt is always one of our favorite go-to restaurants when visiting North Conway, which is often. Esp due to location since we stay at the North Conway Grand and you can easily walk. Today we went for lunch and we were disappointed. I’ll start with the good (great actually)….the service….Amber was awesome!! On point, attentive, and friendly!! Nice job!! The atmosphere remains great as well, unchanged. The blood orange mimosa I had was perfect, my husbands choice in draft beer was great and the salt and vinegar wings my daughter had as her meal were delish!! We ordered salsa and Guacamole for an app and although it was delicious, could use more chips. I noticed my Pho was taken off the menu which was extraordinarily disappointing, it’s been my favorite dish of theirs for a long time, so I tried the Miso noodle bowl and it was seriously lacking flavor. The only flavor I got from it was adding the entire container of the spicy sauce that comes on the side. Without it literally nothing. So if you don’t like heat, you’ll be out of luck. My husband did not like his chicken tacos, the meat is pulled and on the mushy side. I am hoping for some change back to the old menu items and next time we visit we have a better flavor experience. I’ll be very sad to take this one off of our hit list. I gave three stars because I don’t have the heart to give it two although that’s kind of how I’m feeling. Historically we really love this place.

This establishment offered both dine in and outside dining for lunch when we arrived for lunch on our way to the B&B for a week of relaxation. I ordered a burger and it arrived perfectly made to my order. The have wide selection of local craft beers in addition to the standard fare of beers. Highly recommend having a meal here.

A nice restaurant to grap lunch with family, friends or a love one. When we entered we were met with a table of customers eating and couldn’t tell where the c welcoming desk was. But we later were directed by the person at the bar to the server to be seated. My only recommendation is for them to move the service and welcoming desk to the front of the door. So that when you enter that is the first people you see. Not people eating. Personally I will not feel comfortable sitting there and having people walk in and the first thing they see is me eating. Nonetheless, we had a pleasant waitress and enjoyed our meal too. Will be back again.

Thanks for that feedback. The hostess station is to the left of the door. Depending on staffing (and we have had some staffing shortages lately), the server might be the one directing you to your seat. Understandable that that was less than ideal. Glad you enjoyed the meal and the service however! Please do come again.

Food is first class in the area, but none of the staff wears masks. When entering into the restaurant to ask if they would allow a takeout order, the staff was rude and dismissive. Great food but Not worth the risk of getting COVID.

We just recently restated a preference for staff to mask and currently about 80-90% of them are doing so. This is new based on the current COVID levels in the community. I understand your disappointment with not being able to place an order for take out. In addition to juggling COVID protocols, we are also dealing with a staffing shortage like just about every other restaurant in town. In order to best serve our in-house guests, we are not currently offering take out. We look forward to the day that we can once again offer take out. Until then, thank you for your understanding.

Had a great night at Barley and Salt, mainly because of the bartender/server Tanya. Hands down the best server we have had ever. We found ourselves ordering appetizers, more drinks, dinners, desserts and more drinks simply because we were having such a wonderful time. She anticipated our needs and made Honest suggestions on the menu when we asked.
