We don't get here very often because we live 45 miles away but Crystal Cafe never disappoints. If you want something fancy don't go there but we love this small Cafe that cooks home made comfort food. We had breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches last time...and they were excellent. My favorite liver and onions and the hot beefs. I can not go there without getting the sourcream raisin pie to go. It's to die for!!! The servers are always are so nice and helpful and the young girl at the counter where you pay was extremely pleasant. Can't wait to go backMore
After being heavily lauded by on RoadFood, had to make a stop at Crystal Cafe in S. Sioux City NE. A truck stop diner famous for hearty food and homemade pie. Much smaller than I expected upon entry. After being seated it was apparent that...things had changed since the RoadFood review, possibly due to Covid. No coffee cups, water glasses, or pitchers of water on the table. And surprisingly slow at lunch.
Typical diner menu of sands, burgers, salads etc. Both of us chose to order BLT sands but I chose to customize mine with a hard fried egg. Good bacon not overcooked, fresh veggies and plain wheat bread. Added egg a good call. Megan had fries while I upgraded to onion rings which were nothing special. Very average meal.
So the reviews said the pie here was worth a detour and at first glance it certainly seemed so. Our chocolate cream pie was capped with an impressive mound of whipped topping. My kinda dessert. But alas on first bite it became a disappointment. Cream was somewhat rubbery, the chocolate cream was gritty not smooth, and the crust, while obviously home made, had seen better days. It was crumbly stale not flaky and bland and mushy. May have been real good first or second day but not now. Didn't even finish the piece. Major disappointment.More
I’ve heard the commercial for years and today we made the trip which only added 5 minutes to our normal Sunday options. Seat yourself and a small setting connected to gas station was surprisingly clean and comfortable setting. Jessica was our waitress and she greeted...us with hot coffee and was vey great. No real option for an everything style breakfast so we added two pancakes as a six meal which seemed to be more costly than I expected. I liked my breakfast (#4 but over easy was a little runny)and my daughter loved her omelette. Not sure we’ll be back anytime soon.More
The waitress informs me they don't make mashed potatoes after 9pm. It was 7:21. What restaurant doesnt make potatoes when their key item is a hot beef and mashed potatoes? Service was fair (new waitress but did well) place is really clean and offers a...good variety. Perks, it's one of the only places open 24 hours next to IHOP or Perkins and McDonalds. If you go, try pie.
Nothing really above average here, but decent for a truck stop.More
Was placed on a work project down in South Sioux City and this was right next to my hotel. All the meals have a real home cooked vibe about them and are great value for money. The breakfast omelettes are really tasty with a vast...range of fillings. The Dinners and Sandwiches are huge and filling. The Chocolate Brownie Sundae is the best I've had anywhere.More
We stopped in to visit based on some earlier reviews. Too bad we had breakfast earlier because the food portions were huge and appetizing. We opted for a cup or three of coffee. Although I had breakfast earlier, I couldn't pass on the pie. Generous...piece and delicious.More
From atmosphere to food everything was wonderful! Our waitress was friendly and made sure drinks stayed full and food came out fast!! The ruben was mouth watering good and my grandmother LOVED the chicken fried steak. In addition to that, the sourcream rasin pie was...wonderful! I will definitely be coming here again soon with family and friends! Crystal Cafe-crazy good!More
