We arrived at this restaurant accidentaly whilst taking a Sunday drive through the Bukk mountains recently. The village of Répáshuta is set in a valley off the road between Eger and Lillafüred, surrounded by forests. The Vadász Étterem is well sign posted from the main...road.
The word "vadász" means hunter in Hungarian and the decor and menu certainly reflect this. The walls are wood panelled and decorated with many skins and antlers. There is a main dining area and 3 rustic booths for diners.
The menu is extensive and has many traditional and wild game dishes. I started with a deer soup followed by leg of venison in gravy with dumplings and only just managed to finish my food as the portions were huge. My wife could only eat her starter and half her main course, the rest was boxed up for her to take home. We daren't even look at the desserts...next time we'll skip the starter and have a main course and dessert.
There was also a good selection of drinks available and the service was excellent, the waitress being polite and attentive. The cost for 2 starters, 2 main courses, 1 glass of wine, 2 bottles of water and a coffee was about 7,400 huf - a bargain.
Would I recommend this restaurant? Absolutely! It offers a more extensive menu than any I've come across in Eger, the prices were cheaper and the portions larger. If travelling through the Bukk mountains it's well worth dropping down into the traditional village of Répáshuta and stopping off for a meal here.
The restaurant is also a guest house.
Not everything was perfect however. My wife's starter could have been slightly hotter as could my main course but this in no way detracted from our overall experience but the reason for not giving 5 out of 5 across the board.
