We stopped by this Sunday for lunch and aside from the wait (you order first and they seat you after you order), it was a great experience. We must have gotten there right after a large group of SLU students arrived so we waited in line for a while. Once we ordered, the service was prompt and very polite. We started off with fried green tomatoes that were awesome and perfectly cooked. I ordered the 3 piece dark with mash potatoes and Brussels sprouts that had been sauteed in a bacon vinaigrette. The mild chicken had a bit of heat to it and it was delicious. The skin was crunch and the meat was tender and juicy as it should be. My wife had the same experience. The menu is very diverse and I want to try other items for sure. I think our bill was $32.00 which is somewhat expensive for fried chicken but than again this was much better than KFC and it's local. The staff were all extremely friendly even as busy as the place appeared. We were asked several times if everything was ok and we appreciated that. We will be back for sure.

If you have a group of 6, you can let them now and they will give you one of the “reserved” tables. They do this so groups of 2-4 people don’t take up the 6 tops, which is nice. We came for lunch on a Saturday and it wasn’t overly busy. I got the blt with Mac n cheese, my fiancé got the firebird with Mac n cheese. The blt was decent but over all i think the bread they put it on is too thick and overwhelmed the sandwich. I tried the firebird and it was amazing, I would order than next time. The Mac b cheese was good but a small portion. Tried our friends fries and they were super tasty with the special sauce. I would go back and order the chicken or firebird sandwich (medium) next time.

Hands down best chicken in St. Louis! My husband and I love Hattie B’s and we wanted to find a similar place. This place did not disappoint!! We went on a Friday at 3PM and there was no wait! We got the medium dark plate with 2 sides. The medium heat was the perfect amount of heat that lingered. It wasn’t overpowering at all. The fried pickles were pretty good. You get a good amount for a side and the ranch was a nice touch. The slaw had a good amount of vinegar and was well balanced. My husband got the Mac and cheese and it was perfectly cooked and cheesy. The service was so fast and we couldn’t believe how good the food was! We can’t wait to come back!

Southern used to be one of my favorite restaurants. It has changed. The menu is different - more like chicken strips instead of actual chicken. The strips were dry. The sides were just ok. Not in any hurry to go back and that is a shame.

We were in town for a surprise engagement with family. We love going to Pappy's and saw Southern on the other side of the building. Our last day in town we decided to stop and try Southern and it did not disappoint!!! We are a big foodie family and everyone was satisfied. My fiance and mother in law who do not eat fish at all LOVED the catfish nuggets. The mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were to die for!!! The service was amazing even tho we were not allowed inside the building. We will make sure to stop at Southern every time we are in St. Louis.

First time coming here. I ordered chicken tenders and fries with all the different sauces. The chicken was juicy and crunchy. The fries are seasoned well and delicious. I highly enjoyed all the sauces. Recommend as a place to try!

Will definitely come back! This place was delicious. I recommend the BLT’s or the firebird chicken. I got the number 2 level of hotness and it was just spicy enough, but not melt your tongue. The fries, mac and cheese, and fried pickles are good too.

The kitchen looked dirty from the counter view and looked like there there was old grease everywhere. The food was horrible and bland.

Simply amazing! Fast service, great staff, you won’t be disappointed if you want a taste of Nashville’s famous hot chicken here in STL.

This is a laid back , order at the register type of joint. The food is really delicious. They have several levels of heat which makes for a fun visit.

I met a friend at Southern for a pre-concert meal, first visit for both of us. The ordering line was very slow (maybe to control the turnover of the limited seating in the narrow dining space?), but the service was friendly & the staff did a good job of clearing empty plates to encourage diners to open up space for other dine-in customers. I was expecting some unique flavor to their chicken, but didn't want a spicy overload. So I ordered my chicken breast "Original" which was labeled on the menu with one flame & described as having "a hint of spice." Though the chicken was well prepared & still juicy while fully cooked, I got no sense of spiciness that would distinguish it from standard fried chicken at chain restaurants. My friend had the same comment about his Original chicken served as a Honey Hot Chicken Wrap, though he did enjoy the huge biscuit that he ordered on the side. My small serving of mac & cheese was nothing special. Maybe the secret is to ask for the two-flame Mild ("hotter than what you think"), but Southern could stand some tweaking with their spice levels across the board to meet the expectations set by their menu.

That is, if you order "CLUCKING HOT" spice level. Nice mouth feel afterwards and "wet head". And it helps the memory the next day. Now, what did I eat that was so spicy? Oh. :) Ordered the half bird with collards, veggie of the day (Brussels) and MacNCheese, all good. OK, Southern's fried chicken is more "well done" and greasy than Gus's. But Gus's only has one spice level, quite a bit milder than "Clucking Hot" at Southern. If you like spicy and greasy, get your Sunday "dinner" (lunch) chicken fix here. Otherwise if you like less spicy, not as greasy and not overdone, try Gus's. Postmates also delivers Southern, which if you're in the neighborhood is easy.

I ordered 2 mild tenders and fries. The mild has a kick to it but, the chicken is very tasty tender. The fries were good but, had a little too much seasoning for me. I didn't have much time or I would have opted to get some sides. If I ever get back to the area I will definitely try it again.

We have been looking forward to trying Southern for awhile - finally had the opportunity. We both had the fried chicken plate with two sides -medium. The chicken was very disappointing- overcooked, no heat at all. I’ve had spicier, more flavorful and better cooked at Popeyes. The chicken is served on a slice of white bread with pickles reminiscent of Nashville’s hot chicken , but this bread was stale and also not too flavorful. I had greens and mashed potatoes as side, my partner had Mac and cheese and coleslaw. The greens were good, the mashed potatoes and gravy ok. The Mac and cheese was very dry and had very little cheese flavor . Coleslaw was average. Overall, underwhelming and not something I’d return for. I would have considered returning to try the hotter version, but the chicken was fried so poorly I won’t waste my time or money.
